Can't say he has held his team hostage either.  Jerry has just consistently fumbled the contract situation with Dak putting the Cowboys in situations where they are paying him more than they would have to due to their own incompetence.

The contract they gave Dak in 2021 for 4 years and $160M has proven out to be a mistake.  In the 3 years since he signed it, the NFC has been represented in the Super Bowl at QB by Matthew Stafford, who was making comparatively much less at $27M per season AAV, followed by Hurts and Purdy while both were on rookie contracts for very little money.  Hurts was an MVP runner-up in 2022 and Purdy was 4th in MVP voting last year (his votes might have been diluted by voters thinking his RB is an MVP).

The proper course is let Dak play out his contract this season, then let him walk.  I think most pundits greatly overestimate Dak's market in free agency -- someone will overpay him, for sure, but it wouldn't be me if I owned an NFL team.

The bold part I used to agree with wholeheartedly… And my gut still does. However, the second part of your post says it all. Some team will cough up the money.  And until that stops, these pundits are accurate when they say it will happen

I am completely with you when I say that, if it was me, I would not do it…

I learned years ago that my logic regarding a situation in the NFL is not viewed the same to every NFL GM

Speaking of Dak being overpaid, Mahomes is the only QB on a modern mega deal to even get to the SB, let alone win it.  I don't think Brady and Stafford's deals count as megadeals.

Really, every QB in the NFL besides Mahomes and the best of the guys on rookie deals...is overpaid.  No team besides the Chiefs has found a way to consistently compete while their QB is on one of these back-breaking deals.

Interesting trend: highest performing QB in the NFL on a rookie deal:

2020: Patrick Mahomes

2021: Joe Burrow

2022: Jalen Hurts

2023: Brock Purdy

4 consecutive years, the best QB in the NFL ***not on a mega deal*** goes to the Superbowl.

If that's not an indictment of what's going on with QB contracts...

The last highlight was a clear travel (can't rollover with the ball) but the rest was very nice.

Which is why I don’t think he’d be an option. It seems like Lurie is looking to pull out a meaningful amount of cash by selling a small stake in the team. Based on a $7.5 billion valuation, even selling a 1-5% stake would require and provide a tremendous amount of money.

I don't, but he has spoken with Lurie a few times about sports, so I can see why he may get a foot in the door in the process or be referenced.

I don't think it's him.  I think it's the Cowboys organization.  They don't spend cash.  It's because the Jones' are greedy d-bags that don't care about winning.

They weren't the best QBs in the NFL they were the "highest performing on rookie deals". QB contracts aren't going to change. What's the point?

If getting to the Super Bowl was the same as winning, you would be making a better point.  The real issue in roster building is the percentage of the cap.  Hurts's deal is better than Burrows's and currently Mahomes's deal in terms of percentage. The Eagles have done a better job with regard to structuring the contract.  If you take a look at the other QB's that are in the top 10, the Eagles are the only team that have kept the percentage under 10% in the next 2 seasons.  Rookie contracts are in the single digit to less than 1% range.   I think the crux of your point gets to the luck involved in the NFL.  The Bengals, Chiefs, Eagles and Niners all had talented rosters already.  The QB play elevated the team but the defensive side of the ball were top 10 with the exception of the 2020 Chiefs.  I think the lesson is that it's hard to build around a QB.  It's easier to build a team and then add a QB.  It takes luck to draft a Mahomes type franchise QB.  The question is whether betting on your QB that elevated the roster to a Super Bowl makes sense.

Dumbest thing you'll see on the internet today.  Well.... dumbest NFL thing at least.

Who the F is going to play?  When the game was after the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl players were the only ones that didn't play.  When they moved it to before the Super Bowl, the players that played in the championship games bowed out.  Even with it being flag football.... you know what, I haven't watched it in years since they moved it to before the Super Bowl so I have no idea who's participating in flag football.  All I know is a mid season pro bowl you'll have Justin Fields throwing to Quez Watkins

the important part is going to the Super Bowl.

In order to get to the Super Bowl - have the best QB on a rookie deal.

Logically, you throw away any QB not on  rookie contract unless he's Mahomes.

Personally, I've been in favor of a roster with a lot of running QBs, cheap, who can also play other positions.  as in,  put 2 rookie deal running QBs on the field at the same time. or one running QB and one position player who can throw, has QB on their resume.

Reaching on that one. He got full possession while he was on his back then passed it.

Mahomes signed the largest contract in NFL history during the 2020 season and beat the bottom 2 in your list in that years Superbowl, so the evidence for your conclusion is mixed at very best.

I am surprised that more teams haven't tried to get guys signed to a ten year deal, the chiefs have a fixed cost that they know for 10 solid years and can structure their cap accordingly, it gets easier for them to surround Mahomes with talent year by year.

You would've thought a guy like Burrow for example would've been a candidate for a long term lock in as a pocket guy who isn't going to shorten his career getting beaten up running and can clearly get it done on the field, how hard can it be to sell a player on 10 years income security instead of betting your career on 3 year re ups.
