It's just hindsight at this point but check the notes from Ben Sola, now at Lions camp. The players on the board, that also fit needs (S, TE2 etc.) when the Eagles selected Nolan Smith are notable.

Joey Porter Jr., Sam LaPorta, Michael Mayer, Brian Branch all went within the next 15 picks. I know there was excitement watching Nolan Smith drop and everyone thought the Eagles should sprint to the podium, but maybe there's a reason he continued to drop when teams with DL/OLB needs passed on him.

Two days at Lions camp in the books. Some thoughts: Branch: There isn't a player here that consistently gets open against Brian Branch. Only one who can actually get catches on him is Amon-Ra, and even then, they're usually contested. Wouldn't be surprised if we're calling him the best slot in football by December.

I have no issues with the Smith pick.  It seems obvious that they stuck to their board and drafted a player at a premium position.

They weren't going to select a TE that early and Branch went 15 picks later.

A lot of bad players are mixed in those next 15 picks too.

And you guys wanted Justin Simmons

Red are candidates to trade or upgrade during cut downs, I think the rest are basically locks.

I feel they will put the 3 best corners out there and Q showed he belongs. He needs to be out on the field even if its at nickle.  The Eagles can go lighter at DB since they have several hybrid type players like CJGJ, Bradberry, Maddox, Q, DeJean, plus Sydney Brown. Howie has turned this position group around and is almost a log jam now.

They won't cut or trade Tuipulotu unless they can get another NT. Mustipher is a camp body, IMHO. Here to eat pre-season snaps. Otherwise, it looks good.

Just for individual drills, no team work

2nd rounder

For what it’s worth, I think the Eagles will go heavy, not light, in the secondary when they make their final cuts. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep eleven or possibly even twelve. They can go light at RB (3) and TE (2), knowing that the next in line at those spots won’t be claimed and should easily make their way to the practice squad where they can be activated, for a while at least, for game days.

There is no point in cutting NFL talent at one position — DB in this instance — just to keep what are essentially JAGs at another simply because the numbers feel right.

I think 11 in the secondary.  I think there is going to be a commitment to running the ball this year, so I think they go with 4 RBs.  I would be surprised if they don’t go with only 2 TEs because they probably view Johnny Wilson as a potential one at need.  The dude can block.

As I think about it, I have to agree with you. Rosters aren’t really 53 guys any more. The 53 are guys you have to protect from getting claimed. The rest not so much.

Four tiers:

The active roster, these are the guys who play, and the key decisions. Since the non-active guys can't replace them on game day, you have a week to make moves due to injuries.

The "stash" roster, the 8 non-active spots that should be used to stash prospects with high ceilings who you're red-shirting the first half if not the whole season. This includes the 3 protected slots on the PS. Not just draft picks, but someone like the safety they picked up who may need time to get healthy

The PS veteran roster. These are marginal veterans not good enough to be claimed on waivers, but good enough to be replacement players if needed. Toth for example.

The cannon fodder roster:  These are the long shot prospects you stash, evaluate and churn on the PS during the season.

unless he gets more in a trade than he gave up,  in which case he might look smart.  Howie would look smart if he got more from trading Pickett than it cost to get him.   I'd think the Raiders might want to give up a 2nd for Pickett.  Baker was down immediately after leaving the Browns,  but rebounded pretty quickly.  I think Pickett is better than Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell.  That's who the Raiders are going with, there isn't some better QB who is injured.    Pickett took the Steelers to the playoffs, a level of not suck that the Raiders rarely achieve.   And the Raiders draft so badly,  the Raiders might have to think of their 2nd round pick, in their hands,  as worth a jag level, or bad, player, so it's clear that Pickett is worth more than a bad player, so they can move the 2nd round pick into the hands of a team that will turn that 2nd rounder into a good solid starter, or a star.   It's not unreasonable for a team with a QB room like the Raiders to like getting 2 or 3 years of a qb who is on his cheap rookie deal who was a first round draft pick who took his team to the playoffs one of the 2 years he was there.   He was upgraded with 2 running QBs,  both better than what the Raiders have.  Pickett to the Raiders for a 2nd,  throw in Ricks and Jobe.

Siri, show me the worst case of EMB pre season trade value delusion in recorded history.

Even if Al Davis' corpse crawled like an eldritch horror out of his grave and somehow retook the reins at Raiders, even with a combination of supernatural force, dust and weird black mush for brains at the helm they still wouldn't be offering a second rounder for Kenny Pickett.

Minshew outplayed Pickett last year, and it wasn't close.

I would prefer Aiden O’Connell over pick it as well

You raise a good point but, Branch probably would have looked like trash last year on that defense.  The secondary was just constantly out of position and unable to communicate. The questions about the Smith pick are going to persist unless and until he becomes a productive starter.  I do think he looks bulkier and more capable as an every down player.

Oh, I think the Eagles will have four RBs in uniform against the Packers in the opener. It's just that I think it's a real possibility that the fourth guy is a practice squad elevation. The same would hold true for the third TE, although that's probably a bit less likely.

I'm just always looking for creative ways to get down to 53. The rules allow for it with those game-day elevations. That wasn't always the case so teams would have to be locked in with their roster. There is so much more flexibility now, which I like.

Dolphins cut Teair Tart, wonder if the Eagles will have interest. Prob not since they didn't before.
