For what it’s worth, I think the Eagles will go heavy, not light, in the secondary when they make their final cuts. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep eleven or possibly even twelve. They can go light at RB (3) and TE (2), knowing that the next in line at those spots won’t be claimed and should easily make their way to the practice squad where they can be activated, for a while at least, for game days.

There is no point in cutting NFL talent at one position — DB in this instance — just to keep what are essentially JAGs at another simply because the numbers feel right.

That's what they did last season.   I could see them going with 4 WRs too. My guess is Ainias Smith may be an IR candidate.  I do think he's got something going on because he just looks slow and unable to cut.  I don't think John Ross and Parris Campbell have done anything to make the roster.  I am sure either would be available for the practice squad.  If the question is whether they go with lose Eli Ricks, Jobe, Maddox vs. Uzomah or Jenkins, I think the TEs should go.

Four tiers:

The active roster, these are the guys who play, and the key decisions. Since the non-active guys can't replace them on game day, you have a week to make moves due to injuries.

The "stash" roster, the 8 non-active spots that should be used to stash prospects with high ceilings who you're red-shirting the first half if not the whole season. This includes the 3 protected slots on the PS. Not just draft picks, but someone like the safety they picked up who may need time to get healthy

The PS veteran roster. These are marginal veterans not good enough to be claimed on waivers, but good enough to be replacement players if needed. Toth for example.

The cannon fodder roster:  These are the long shot prospects you stash, evaluate and churn on the PS during the season.

At least two of the inactives are OL.  Not sure they are necessarily "prospects with high ceilings”.  At any given time the inactives will include injured players. I agree that they will use some of those spots for prospects.  I’d say a good portion of the folks in here thought Hunt for such when drafted.

I agree with you and JR that you now have to consider the PS as part of the roster but we cannot lose sight of the fact that the call ups are limited as are the protections.  The call ups are limited to three games as is the protection, which is basically the elevated player doesn’t have to go through waivers to return to the PS.  It’s not like they can protect x number of players all season long from leaving to sign onto another team’s active roster.   They can’t.  The PS contract is non binding.

Eagles did a good job with the PS last year including at cutdown. The cowpads went with one QB initially.  There were some interesting strategies at cutdown.  We’ll see more of that this year.

But there is a risk.  Take Toth as an example.  They have "lost” him twice.  So the risk has to be considered.  Some prospects will be risked onto the PS.  Those four players with no more than two seasons might fit some almost roster worthy players  For example, Jobe doesn’t qualify but Ricks does.  Many of the players retained from last year’s PS fit there too.  Howie will try to measure who most likely clears cutdown waivers.

The NFL states that a team cannot sign a player to a practice squad contract until all teams have been notified. Here are the qualifications to make the practice squad:

  • Players who do not have an accrued season of NFL experience (rookies);
  • Players who were on the active list for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season(s);
  • Up to four players per team who have earned no more than two accrued seasons (no game limitations);
  • Up to six players per team with no limitations as to their number of earned accrued seasons.
  • One international player.

Sounds like we're WINNING!!!!!

Yikes… He looked really sharp.  They have a smart offensive coach there.

There have been so many comments from players on offense about how the COACHING is fixing problems with handling the blitz and creating more innovation. People criticize Hurts for not doing something about the blitz, while at the same time criticizing him for changing plays the coaches called. It always starts with coaching and play design. I still think the main problem - and there were others - was the coaching and their lack of making necessary changes when there were problems.

There's no point wasting a protected spot on a marginal veteran who (or his equivalent) can be stashed on the PS.

Veterans on the 53 have to be above replacement to be worth protecting, otherwise protect a kid. A replacement level veteran is less likely to be claimed than one with real value.

Basically, those extra PS spots are for veterans you'd otherwise be signing off the street, this allows you to let them practice with the team and know the schemes if needed to play.

I know… But Reddick expecting some other team to pay the price for that misuse is not realistic.

I realize he’s not walking into a GM‘s office and saying that… It just feels like it

You aren't wrong... but to minimize what he actually accomplished in his first three years is a bit disingenuous.   The poor guy was miscast by the team that drafted him, and he's been paying the price ever since.   I'm sure there's a little resentment because of it.

With victory also comes losses

Look at the crowds allowed by the Patriots.  No fans would be allowed at the same scrimmage at Novacare.
