Because it wasn't.

Pickett and #120 for #98 and (2) 2025 7ths.

108 + 2 - 54 = 56

Eagles traded the equivalent of a mid-4th rd pick for two years of control of a NFL starting QB to back up Hurts.

It was a mistake because Pickett stinks.  He is not an NFL starting QB

Nope. The whole reason pitt dealt him was that they knew he wasnt a starting qb. He has shown that here so far too

a 4th is quite valuable. It was a stupid trade on the level of Golden Tate

Tate won us a playoff game

It was a mistake.   Fortunately the trade shouldn't set them back much.

I don’t fault Howie at all for the Pickett trade. Thought he got great value but McKee looks like the better QB.

I didn't realize the NFL finally changed the IR rules and you can now put someone on IR concurrently with cutting the roster down to 53. It's about time, I always thought that rule made absolutely no sense.

I think the Eagles logic with Pickett was he's a playable NFL QB - not easy to find in the draft - whose draft grade was probably significantly higher than a 4th round pick. And with McKee, while it's true we don't know his ceiling, we also don't know his floor. So there's also that element of insurance.

All of that said, I hate watching Pickett play football.

Only two are allowed on cut down day.  And they would count against the maximum of 8 designated to return during the regular season.

"By Competition Committee; amends Article XVII, Section 17.16(C), to permit each club to place a maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return. Such players will immediately count as two of the club’s total designations.”

I hadn't paid much attention to McMahon on first blush but I went back and watched every snap of his and I'm glad I did. He was terrific. No mistakes. snaps were good. Run and pass blocking both solid. Nice block in particular on a screen pass where he was careful not to get too far downfield. Infinitely better performance than Toth last week and better than Gates this week. BTW that snap count graphic is way off. The Eagles ran 68 offensive plays. No way McMahon and Gates could combine for 111 snaps at center.

McMahon looked good, surprisingly good. What happens if he develops and Jurgens takes the next step. The Eagles could have two very unique, athletic Centers but would be forced to move one. I know, getting way ahead of myself but just thinking what ifs.

Berman thinks Dean will beat out Baun in a late surge to win starting LB spot.

He also proposed a trade, happens to be one I proposed months ago so he reads the blog. Eli Ricks for Terrace Marshall.

Trading for Pickett wasn't dumb.  He's a reasonable back up.  Making Pickett the number 2 QB when McKee is clearly better is dumb.

Pickett may look much better with better oline play and receivers.  Pickett just doesn't seem to see what is in front of him.  If he ever starts, he will need very structured reads.  McKee does a much better job of just hitting the last step of his dropback and making a throw.

How do you think the secondary will shake out with Rogers, Ringo, Mitchell, and DeJean?

I prefer my secondary stirred.  I think we should trade Slay and start Ringo and Rogers.

That's why they need to play McKee in the first half, to gauge how much is simply playing a weaker defense in the second half.

The backup WRs left a lot to be desired, as did the OL with F Johnson and Steen out of the game. Though McKee is better throwing into tight windows.

Do "they” really?  They have a much better idea of what they have with each player than we do.  Really it’s us that want to see McKee with the twos so we can evaluate him.

Has Rodgers been that good the last two games?

Berman said he saw Stearns walking around after the game and he's really laboring when he walks so he doesn't look like someone anywhere close to returning to the field any time soon unless he just has a very awkward unnatural gait to the way he walks. He said Matt Hennessy was walking very gingerly last night, which is why he didn't play, but Stearns was way more noticeable.

Slay will be gone next yr with JB

can use the corner saving to cover other cap hits

I don't see how you can seperate the two. Unless you think spending the equivalent of a 4th rd pick on a 3rd string QB is worthwhile.

I thought he had a PBU.  I don't think he's been bad.  Both Ringo and Mitchell have better size which is one reason they may want

Not to rub it in, but the pick the Eagles gave the Steelers for Pickett, they took Payton Wilson. His knees are worrisome, but he's a terrific talent at LB. Next pick was Kam Kinchens, Luke McCaffery, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Troy Franklin, Cedric Gray, Theo Johnson, Javon Baker all within the next 15 picks.

They had a QB2 on the roster in Tanner McKee. With the pick they gave Pittsburgh, they could have brought in WR3, TE2, LB. Javon Baker has WR1/2 potential. Troy Franklin is a weapon. Would much rather any of those players on the team instead of Kenny Pickett.

I make my own rules.

I'm just not understanding the anti-Dean campaign. He was terrific last week, having one of the best PFF grades and will likely do that again after tonight's game. He's playing fast.

Just adding this since the grades are out now for preseason game 2:

He also received high praise from those covering the joint practice where he had several big plays including a couple "sacks" and a PBU that Baun ended up intercepting on the deflection.

Kenny Pickett looks like Morgan Wallen
