Patrick Johnson balling in very late pre-season action is fools gold. Im not ready to trade one of our few proven pass rushers because Patrick Johnson is around.

Any expectation that Patrick Johnson is going to develop into any kind of star pass rusher would seem silly of course. But by the same token, he’s actually been a pretty respectable backup for us the past couple of seasons. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to consider him to be a player who’s likely to make the team and contribute again.

I don't care if they don't get a lot of touches. I'm looking for depth and development. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith are top level talents. Goedert is a good tight end, but the next full season he plays will be his first. Saquon is a great RB, but we all have questions about his health and IF he plays a full season. After their top 4 weapons, the Eagles have next to nothing in the cupboard. Calcaterra, Gainwell, Shipley, Covey, Wilson. Those are next man up.

The Eagles potentially have 5 CB who could be outside starting CB. At the very least 4. They have capable spot starters in Jobe and Ricks. If they can use some of that depth to acquire a young weapon for the offense, I'm all for it.

Who else remembers the absolutely ridiculous number of injuries we had at cornerback during the 2018 season? I think we were down to our EIGHTH(!) corner in the playoff game against the Saints. Literally. The Saints had a critical fourth and goal when we were still ahead (I forget it it was 14-0 or 14-7 at the time) and Brees simply tossed a short pass to the receiver our deep deep deep deep backup corner was covering. Or trying to cover.

Corner depth is a lot more critical than people tend to think. We finally appear to have some depth here. Let’s not discard it for some small incremental gain at another spot that is very unlikely to have all that much of an impact.

The guys we have are "depth and development" guys.

There was a day when I wanted to make an argument that we can have a productive WR3 on this team. So I set out to find some examples of teams with 3 very productive WRs and a TE and hopefully a productive every down HB. I just couldn't really find an example that proved it's possible. I thought maybe the Greatest Show on Turf would be a good place to start. They had 2 great receivers and a great HB, but everybody else was just a mild contributor or purely a role player. You had the 2021 Bengals who had 3 great WRs, but Mixon had under 400 yards receiving and Uzomah had under 500 yards. When you start looking at other seasons and you increase the RB or TE production, a WR's contribution falls. After looking at many examples, I resigned myself to accept that you can only stretch touches so far. Then I'm always reminded of the 2017 Eagles  that had an offense made up more of complimentary pieces than superstars.

So applying what I believe I've learned to this debate, I'm fine with WR3 by committee. Covey looks like he can be a competent slot receiver, but he's smallish and doesn't have field stretching speed to play on the outside. Wilson has great size and catch radius, but probably won't stretch the field. Ross and Campbell have speed that teams have to respect, but neither has really ever risen beyond the Quez Watkins level in the NFL. I don't think we need to trade for somebody at this time. We just need team players that can come in and play roles in certain situations.

I'd prefer to keep the depth at CB because when you have competition like we currently have for the starting role, it pushes guys to work harder and get better.

Also, Johnson played a lot earlier in the last game and still would have had a sack if not for being tackled while he had his hands on the QB.

I'll always remember how well Trent Cole played in his rookie preseason against 3rd and 4th stringers while he was an undersized DE (for a 4-3 defense). People said the same thing about that being "fools gold" because he was playing against scrubs. You're also playing next to scrubs. Are you winning battles out there? That's what's important.

Yeah, Id trade Jobe, and/or potentially Ringo or Rodgers.

We may be able to trade an OL also. And seem to have a QB to spare.

Howie should be able to make some moves.

Tbh I’d rather keep ringo and rodgers then trade them for a 3rd wr. I’d be more willing to sign someone like renfrow or Michael Thomas (i dislike Thomas) or someone who gets cut than give up those two.

I rather just sign someone that gets cut or renfrow/thomas who are FAs than give up some of our cb depth in a trade for a 3rd WR. Frankly i think they get an upgrade 3rd wr from a team that’s going to cut someone and give up minimal to acquire them.

To trade one of those guys, the WR would have to be pretty damn good. Or maybe you get a good LB.

I’m much more open to doing it for a good lb. Simply cause i don’t know what I’m going to get at that position this year nor a definitive long term answer. We are basically hoping white, baun, dean and trotter works out this year and next year if white, baun and dean fail then you don’t have much.

He’s a pass rusher who hasn’t registered a sack in 3 years in the nfl.  Making the team is fine, but it would require a leap forward to expect (or want) any contribution.

I think Carson being with Andy is the best decision for this time in his career after it not working out on the last 3 teams he was on since he left us.   He already looks much better on the Chiefs.

He looked good with the rams last year.

He played one game against 49er backups.

In which case their cap hit will be far larger

the cheap young dbs give us some optionality

the problem is that we wont have to keep them all. Some will be getting released this year.
