Last year the Eagles 53-man roster was comprised of:

Offense -- 24  QB (3), RB (4), WR (4), TE (4), OL (9)

Defense -- 27  DE/EDGE (6), DT (7), LB (3), CB (7), Safety (4)

Special Teams 2

Where does Johnny Wilson slot on the WR depth chart?  1.  AJ Brown, 2.  DeVonta Smith, 3.  Ainias Smith, 4.  Parris Campbell, 5.  Devante Parker, 6.  Britain Covey, 7.  Johnny Wilson

It's possible the Eagles carry 5 WR on the 53 for this season.  Brown, Smith are locks (of course).  Ainias Smith figures to make it due to versatility.  What it comes down to is, can Wilson beat out Covey?  I don't think Parker or Campbell would be claimed by another team if they were released and brought back; Campbell got $400K guaranteed and I don't think Parker got even that much.  For roster management it's possible both could be released on final cutdowns.

Covey and Wilson would be an interesting roster decision.  Shipley was an excellent KR at Clemson, but didn't return punts.  Ainias Smith returned 82 punts in all 5 seasons at Texas A&M.  DeJean was an excellent PR at Iowa -- but do the Eagles use him there?

I honestly think Howie tries to trade Covey at some point; I don't really see a roster spot for him.  If not, he's likely a cut -- already being 27 years old.

Covey led the NFL in punt return yards.  Covey led the NFL in 20+ yard returns.

Covey might be a starting WR this year.   Unlikely A Smith is that.

It's also worth noting that many had him as a safety in the NFL. We could be looking at an extremely flexible group of DB.

Reports say he struggles to tackle, which makes him a poor fit at safety. Hits but lacks hip roll to wrap up and bring the ball carrier down.

There's still a lot to be determined, and he's shown nothing yet, but I don't know if you can risk Johnny Wilson being on the practice squad. He's going to flash, even if just a little in the pre-season. SOME team is going to be enamored by that and will snatch him up. He very well could never make an impact in the NFL, but not very often do 6-6 240 LB WR who can move fall in to your lap.

So? Unless he steps up, you don't worry about losing him.

Good teams should have players claimed from camp cuts, means you're bringing in NFL players at the back end of your roster.

When no one claims your cuts, you didn't have enough talented players in TC.

How do return yards earn you a starting position at WR? He's never really played WR in the NFL and all of the sudden he's starting? I think not. There's a better chance he's cut than a starter here.

I was listening yesterday and a Bucs fan called in who was upset they let Devin White go.  Miller and Kirwan told him what they heard was there was a play (or plays) during the 2022 season where it showed White not giving full effort.  Supposedly Barrett, Vea and some other veteran guys talked to him and admonished him for it.  Then last season the same thing showed on film again, so Bowles pulled him out and K.J. Britt outplayed him when he got into the lineup.

KJ Britt is their Trotter Jr., so maybe we should be excited about drafting him.

The coordinators meet with the media tomorrow at 1pm

My tinfoil hat conspiracy makes me thing the changes they are making to Hard Knocks this year are so they can skirt around the rules and get the Eagles on it. I think that would have to be their top choice for ratings. Plus they would focus a lot on the first game in Brazil ever, which the NFL would probably love.

I don't really think being on Hard Knocks is a huge detriment to a team at this point.  These guys have cameras shoved in their faces all the time anymore anyway.  And anything and everything gets leaked by someone.  I say do it!  Would be fun to watch.

I agree with you but I don't think the Eagles will do it. I can't think of the last rookie that was with the first team at the beginning of OTAs.

That Smith dude who won the Heisman.

Chitterlings, send your grandmother my way.  That said, no pulled pork, no pork chops, no ham and no bacon?  Don’t get that. Last night I grilled a pork tenderloin that I bourbon based marinaded for a couple days.  Pork, it’s the other white meat.

The problems with chitlins are twofold:

1) they have to cook down forever and

2) the whole house smells like 💩 while that's happening.

Second leg of Rwal Madrid vs Bayern Munich is about to start if anyone is interested.

One of the great European rivalries. Should be a great match after a 2-2 result in the first leg at Bayern.

I don't disagree but if given the option there's no way Howie or Lurie would ever sign off on it.

4 catches for 42 yards in his career… he’s not starting lol.

100% agree. We’ve actually added multiple players who can return punts/kicks. If anything he’s lost value since the draft.

Can’t wait to hear them. Gotta be miles ahead of dumb and dumber last season.

Covey led the NFL in punt return yards.  Covey led the NFL in punt returns 20+ yards.   That's what makes him not cut.

Since he's not cut because great punt returner,  you then look at the other players.

The Eagles sure look to be going in the whole versatile and quick direction with the WR3 spot.   Not A Smith,  because day 3 rookie.  Also,  slower and less quick than Covey.    So,  between more veteran Covey (the Eagles like their own veterans) and Parris Campbell.  I'd pretty much go with flipping the coin there.  I don't think the Eagles go with any starter at the WR3 position that gets over 50% of the snaps.  I don't know who the "starter" is,  but I think that Covey gets a chunk of the snaps and Campbell gets a chunk of the snaps.

I'm hopeful that the Eagles don't try to set records for the number of snaps they give Brown and Smith as starting WRs.   So,  if Brown and Smith aren't getting 90% of the WR snaps, more like 70%,  like other teams do,  you'll have snaps for other WRs like Johnny Wilson.  Parker seems like a backup for Brown,  but Johnny Wilson could also be a backup for Brown.

Seems also like the Eagles wanted to make sure that the small, versatile, quick WR3 was covered.  Covey, Campbell, A Smith are all somewhat similar.   Quez and Oz were somewhat similar and both groups aren't similar.    All of Covey, Campbell, Smith can do some running and pass catching out of the backfield.

Last year,  WR3 was mostly downfield decoy,  to enable more success for Brown and Smith  This year,  versatile and quick,  less downfield.

Covey is small, and that's a concern,  I'm not sure that the Eagles should be throwing 90% of the WR3 at him.   I think that either him or Campbell will be good or great at doing what they want from them,  but I'd split snaps there,  it's always good to be fresh in the playoffs, and not running out of gas,  or injured (see 2023).

Maybe A Smith can be the backup to D Smith?  Maybe A Smith is a solid route runner?

I was assuming he meant defense, otherwise Wentz would've been another obvious choice. To follow up on my previous post, looks like Nate Allen was the last DB to do it.

Yeah, if the team saw starting ability in Covey, why would they burn a draft pick on Ainias Smith? Plus they signed two receivers and drafted two receivers. That's hardly the moves a team makes if they think they have three solid starters on the roster.

Oops - my bad. I forgot we had no receivers in 2020.

Wentz was 3rd string at the beginning of OTAs and camp. Bradford was traded after the last preseason game.

Was it that late? I thought it was shortly after the draft for some reason.

Based on how the 2nd half the season went, the Eagles are eligible for Hard Knocks in my book.
