Is Philly the only team who didn’t play their offensive starters in the preseason?

It is great to see new faces on the EMB.  We look forward to your ongoing contributions!

Remember that guys like Hennessey and Toth are vested veterans and are not subject to waiver claims if they are cut.

Understood, but Howie wouldn’t be cutting them blind. He would have discussed the options with both the player and his agent.  Not too many teams are going to pick up Toth.  I’m not as familiar with Hennessy, but I trust Howie explicitly.

No one is picking up Hennessy.  He was decent depth on ATL but he has had a lackluster injured camp.  He's a guy that will have to wait for injuries during the season to get a shot.  Maybe Toth is better than the 9th or 10th guy on some teams but I doubt he'd get picked up either.  I don't know if Howie would even want Henessy on PS.  Toth they would I think

Here's a good article about the 53 and comments below.

The defense looks right.  Removing Ricks and Jobe makes it really easy to fit everyone else in there.  It shouldn't be hard, unless you're a big Crimson Tide fan, to cut Ricks and Jobe.

Has McMahon been terrible in the preseason at Center?  From what I can tell, no.   Hennessy has been the backup center until McMahon is ready enough.  And they have Toth for that too.  But McMahon I think was drafted to be the backup center of the future, and he's good enough,  the future is now.

I prefer "Becton is backup everywhere" to "each position needs its own backup,  so that 10 OL are needed."     WRs and RBs and quite few other positions have platoons,  more than just the starters play.  Many other positions have a lot of players playing special teams.   OL backups are generally not all that busy.  Having backups that aren't doing anything isn't great.

Got home a little while ago. Horrible game. Looked they just wanted to get the damn preseason over with. The only player out there who looked good was VanSumeren.

That's the sort of attitude that comes from the top.   The front office doesn't care.  The coaching staff doesn't care.   It makes it hard to hold the players accountable to care.  Lethargy associated with the preseason games abounds.   Now, I don't think Harbaugh's methodology is the answer either.   I think there's a happy middle ground.

I used to be on this back in the day when the eagles used to run it.. Dave spadaro days. I mostly like to come and read what everyone is saying.. provide some insight here or there.. but it’s been a consistent visit for as long as I can remember

When it was 4 Preseason games I understood the Starters playing a series or quarter in Game 3.  Now that's it's only 3 games and they added an extra regular season game, I don't think it's worth the risk.   I don't fault coaches for taking caution and not playing starters.  It would suck losing someone, it's already happen to other teams.

The starters used to play a lot more than just one series in one preseason game and that was when there were 4 games and a lot more practices allowed. I can't believe how scared teams are these days to even get a little work to the starters in a live football setting.

You can take all the precautions you want in the preseason and you can still lose a key guy for the season in Game 1. (see 2023 Aaron Rodgers)

There's no excuse to not fully prepare players for the season ahead. If you do lose a key guy before the season begins, you have that much more time to start preparing the replacement for 1st team action.

They added an extra game but that week 1 game still counts

next year there's a non guaranteed 13 Mil (I think) option bonus.  Most do not think he's getting that.   Keeping Bradberry on the roster (after not having to pay him another dollar, and all the rest of the positive cap implications) seems reasonable.   He didn't suck last year,  he was in the bad but not suck tier,  and he has been good.  He's like CB5 and S5,  and when he is playing, which might be rare, could be a game day inactive, he shouldn't be beat up, should be refreshed.   I would expect a low-mid 60s PFF from him in limited snaps.  He wouldn't be the problem.

I'd love for Smith to be an IR guy and have Campbell on the team instead. I don't trust Smith if he had to play, he has fumble and drops issues. I'd at least trust Campbell to not screw up on basic things.

He doesn't have to play. Last year they had Rashad Penny and Albert O on the active roster for the entire year. Albert O didn't play a single snap. Campbell can go to the PS and be a call up if needed. Keep Smith on the active roster and if they don't play him, so be it. Let him learn from two of the best WR in the NFL.

Worst uniforms in the league. Absolute garbage.

Time for the annual fight and for us to say, imagine what they'd say if they were Eagles fans.

Rumor has it he’s walking around like a 90 year old man with the back injury.

If that was a massive fight, then the coverage must have been directed by the amateurs that do preseason NFL games ... because the footage showed everything but a massive fight.

I would prefer Campbell because he's better.   PFF gave him a 71.  a smith with a 62.   Campbell's 71 was the best PFF of any WR or TE on the Eagles.    And he's fast.  He was known to be fast - 4.31 combine - and it was an open question as to whether he was still fast,  and the preseason game showed that he was still fast.  Without accessing PFF,  you can see by the yards per target that he's a weapon.  17 yards per target.    Most of the WRs in the first 2 games weren't making big plays at all,  Campbell had 2 on 2 plays.

Slot WR, weapony.  Parris Campbell (fast),  Britain Covey (quick).  We saw this outcome months ago,  Ross was added later, presumably as insurance if Campbell wasn't ready to go,  but he didn't have big plays on offense.     Phantom IR would be good, perhaps in a designated for return situation, perhaps not.

How can Toth be a vested veteran at this point in his career? He’s been on an active 53 man roster in only about two seasons.

NFLPA..."you earn a credited season if you are on the active, inactive, IR or PUP roster for three or more regular or post-season NFL games"

He's played in 3+ games in 2020, 2021, 2023 (Carolina).  He was on Arizona's roster in 2019 and Philly's IR list in 2022.

Don’t discount the world’s biggest Christian Gonzalez fan. His coverage was sticky.

Austin Stogner.   A 2024 udfa TE cut by the Falcons.  258 pounds.   Shouldn't be bad at blocking.

2019 Oklahoma Sooners.  The Eagles have put many on the roster or practice squad from Jalen's 2019 Sooners.   Grant Calcaterra was another of the Sooners TEs that year.

The Eagles need to have a blocking TE solution of some type.
