It looked like Britain Covey took the second rep which confused the hell out of me but then remembered Sweat has the worst DE jersey number imaginable.

He will be the best blocking DE this season.

The Eagles playing shadow games with their online depth chart.  https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/depth-chart

They aren't clarifying their starting back seven and left Dotson off the depth chart entirely.

They have 15 starters on defense.

I really like the.  Looks like the best practice squad in the league.  Love the MRJ add.

I decided to put a stopwatch to all five reps. Granted, it may slightly inconsistent since each player didn't start at precisely the same spot and the "quarterback" may not have been stationed in the exact same spot. But according to what I timed, from fastest to slowest (with approximate, and take it with a huge grain of salt) times from get-off til ball strip were:

1) Smith (mid 4.5)

2) Sweat (around 4.6)

3) Graham (high 4.6)

4) Johnson (high 4.7)

5) Huff (high 4.9)

So I can absolutely see why someone would praise Smith here. Yes it's only a drill and you can argue all you want that it's not "real" football, that it's simply a demonstration of speed and athletic ability. But we already knew that Smith is fast and athletic. That's what we should expect to see. Him being fast. Which he was. The bigger takeway for me is that Huff wasn't that speedy compared to the others.

I don't think one rep of one drill means much but in general that group has the potential to be a problem.

Yep he was one of my late round targets as a blocker possession guy.  Same as the Rams WR from Texas.

This is a really good signing. Better than anyone we had all pre-season.

Interesting, good work. From the eye test, he looked way too wide. BG looked the fastest, but maybe that was because he took smaller steps.

Didn’t realize Brent Celek’s number was unretired…

I think the pseudo-retired numbers are just for a little while, to show 'some' respect.  Loved Celek, but he's not a retire the number permanently type of guy.  Those really need to be more rare

Not a huge fan of retiring numbers

My judgment is still in limbo on Smith.  My gut tells me he will play a lot better than most people in the blog expect (or will give credit for).  I do get the skepticism, but part of me thinks it's reached the point of being a bit overboard.  I'll judge him more harshly over the first 8-10 weeks the actual season.  By Thanksgiving, I may end up agreeing with what now seems to be the majority (that he's busting).  But I'll wait and see...

And soon enough, 62, 65, 55 will be added to the list that includes 9, 12, 25, 71 as unofficial retired or untouchable numbers. Then you add those to the actual retired 5, 15, 20, 40, 44, 60, 70, 92, 99 and you've got 16 numbers out of circulation. It's dumb. Ring of Honor and Eagles HOF. Wear a patch for the game you honor a player for the HOF and call it a day.

Agreed.

Also, Sweat wearing 19 is lame. I like knowing the position of players by reading their number.

Sweat wearing 19 has nothing to do with the number of retired uniforms and the stupid new rules about who can wear what numbers.  #0 is a weird number for a defensive player, specifically an edge... those should be 50s or 90s.  #2 for a CB?  Weird.  They should be in the 20s and 30s.

In my perfect number world, Sweat would still be in 94. Bryce Huff would have 56 instead of Steen. 56 is one of the best defensive numbers IMO and it's a shame it's being worn by a backup OL. 51 is OK for a Center but I'd prefer a LB wearing 51, so I would give Nolan Smith 51. Cooper DeJean could then wear 3 even though I like him in 33.

Sweat- 94

Huff- 56

Smith- 51

DeJean- 3

Jurgens- 61

To be fair, he did say he wanted #9 but it was retired

Gotta love the "eye test" critiques out there ...

rude-and-childish-eye-test-chart-ahstb.j

I am totally down with allowing WR's and RB's to wear numbers in the 0-19 range. That being said, doing so for defensive players has been dumb. I'm not some purist who hates seeing a DE wearing 19, or a LB wearing a single digit number. That being said, if you are a rookie or free agent WR and you go to a new team you barely have any choices for numbers. Look at Dotson for example, he literally got the option of 87 or a number in the 20's-40's and even after cuts his only additional option was 83.

I also agree that retiring numbers at this point is dumb, and pseudo retiring them is even worse. Put guys in your team HOF or ring of honor whatever you want to call it but don't retire the numbers. As I brought up with WR's, part of the problem for the Eagles (in addition to new defender numbers) is that 5, 9, 12, and 15 are either retired or basically retired.

Funny enough, the Giants just unretired #1 and gave it to Nabers.

I always thought there was a certain elegance to football being the only sport (that I can think of?) that has position specific numbers.  I always thought there was a certain element of pride for amongst each position group for their unique decade of numbers.  But if the current players prefer it this way, then I guess that's not true anymore.

As someone who was never a QB, I would imagine it would be somewhat preferable (for the QB) if the defense has rational numbers.

What's to stop a DC from getting all their DB's numbers in the 50's and all their LB's numbers in the 20's?  Or worse yet, a perfect mix.  I'd have to think that is going to mess with a QB as they are trying to identify matchups on the field at least a little bit.

Hes just the kind of WR who sticks in the league a long time by doing the dirty work. I have a soft spot for those guys after watching Pascal block here for the year he was on the team. Hes likely just a WR4 type of guy for his career. But the kind of player that fans will love.

Hes not just a blocker though. Hes solid as a WR. If he was here all pre-season (and healthy) he would have won a spot on the roster. He is better than Jacob Harris who was probably our best of the bunch of WRs that got cut.

I'd prefer Greg Ward or even J-JAW over an unknown.

Taylor Heineke was traded for a conditional 6th to the Chargers.
