Howie Roseman: James Bradberry made roster because he's a player Eagles 'can rely on when called upon'

James Bradberry spent seemingly the entire offseason dancing on the roster bubble. When the Philadelphia Eagles finalized their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, Bradberry wasn't traded and didn't appear on the cut list.

The veteran moved from corner to safety in an effort to keep a gig in Philly. Vic Fangio's comments in July that the transition isn't as easy as some would believe suggested Bradberry sticking on the roster might be difficult.

On Tuesday, general manager Howie Roseman said Bradberry's move to safety has gone smoothly, and they kept him on the roster because in the heat of battle, he's a player the team could trust, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

"James always has had really good football instincts," Roseman said via the team's official transcript. "When you see him play safety every day here and see his ability to diagnose his football instincts. I think for all of us, that's a transition, that's a different position than playing outside corner.

"He's got a skill set. It's a long season. We already know that he's had tremendous success in this league playing outside corner as well. With the goals that we have for this football team, having a veteran player like that on the roster that we know we can rely on when called upon, we felt like was important."

Coach Nick Sirianni echoed Roseman's comments about Bradberry's IQ being one reason they kept him on the squad to start the season.

"He's a pro, and he's been a pro ever since he's come into this building," he said. "He's led by example. He's led with his play and guys look up to him."

Steelers signing ex-Eagles RB Boston Scott to practice squad

The Steelers are signing former Philadelphia Eagles back Boston Scott, who was cut after spending the summer with the Los Angeles Rams, Allison Koehler of Steelers Wire reports. This according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo

Scott was released in December 2018 by his drafted team, the New Orleans Saints, and immediately signed with the Eagles, where he’d spend six seasons.

During his time in Philadelphia, Scott logged 1,295 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, and 566 yards and one touchdown as a pass-catcher.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's a Brian Johnson thing, it's an Eagles thing. They love KG for some reason. There was a report out of camp that in one RZ drill, the Eagles ran 6 plays and every play went to KG both the runs and the passes.

You're correct that he's perfectly mediocre and completely replaceable but they seem to want to feature him. I don't get it. He's not a threat to break a big run. 10 out of the 16 games he played in he averaged less than 4 YPC. 8 of those games less than 3.5 YPC and 6 of those games less than 3 YPC.

I will be happy when KG is gone.

Under Steichen his YPC was more consistent across the season than it was under Johnson, but even under Johnson he managed over 7 yards a tote across two games against Dallas and almost 8 yards a carry in 2 games against the Giants. He was also better in the later games of last season.

Gainwell does have talent and he does tend to catch balls that are thrown to him, him and Shipley have very similar scouting grades out of college. Ultimately I think Shipley means Gainwell is done here after his rookie deal, but I don't see it as a given Shipley benching him this season, there's a reason they were both picked in the 100+ range.

Ahh yes, the void of the 5th safety since we had 5 safeties on the roster for some reason.

Who else that was cut do you guys want to sign?  Driscoll, etc.

Beginning of OTAs.  Beginning of the season.  Man, what bad luck with his injuries!

Should we be giving Jalen Mills a call?

A lot of delusion from Gianta fans heading into the season.  I see a lot of people guessing between 7 and 11 wins for them.

They have a tougher than average SOS which doesn't help them but they have 2 winnable games to start the season.  They potentially have one of the best d-lines in the league. They have a good defensive coordinator.  Nabers gives Jones a legitiimate weapon he hasn't had. On the other hand, their o-line is still a mess aside from Thomas.  Singletary is not a workhorse back.  They have questions in their secondary.  If they start the season poorly, it could get very bad for them.

Channelling their inner Alshon.

I'm guessing that with Bradberry headed to IR, the team will likely elevate either Stoll or Campbell to the 53. There's no need to carry 5 safeties on the active roster.

Probably Stoll or some other non-vested vet. Might as well wait until after Week 1 for a guy like Campbell or Burks.

Makes sense. I'm not sure if Wilson will be ready to go for week 1, but they can elevate Campbell and Gates. So need to deactivate 7 guys -- Wilson, Keegan, Kinnard and McKee on offense; Hunt, Booker and Ricks on defense would be my guess.

I wonder if they could look at adding a WR from someone's practice squad instead.

I agree Allen is the 2nd best QB in the League.  I can see an argument that you think he's overrated if someone were to put him in a 1b category to Mahomes.  I think Allen is closer to Hurts and Lamar Jackson than he is to Mahomes.  I think there's an argument for Joe Burrow as the number 2.

Let’s see how Burrow does post injury and potentially without Chase.

Bradberry put on IR so should see corresponding move soon
