I start looking at colleges with my daughter this fall. The tuition is insane.

We've been saving since both our children have been born. Obviously the goal is to fully pay for their education. Going to try my best to help them understand how lucky they are to start their adult life debt-free.

I don't want them taking out loans either. Thankfully they are both realistic and not wanting to go to a private school with 100k a year rates for a BA.

We did the whole looking at colleges thingy in '19 and the prices were already totally off the charts by then. I'm sure it is worse now.

Yeah, 100k is insane. We're targeting 250k-300k each for them. That "should" reasonably be enough. Anything beyond that and we'll need to have discussions.

Even out of state at a state school is going to be 60+ for most of them.

I'm assuming 75k/year.

Not like we didnt know this would be the case ages ago. Subsidized demand is the root cause, not the solution

Kid wants to go to law school so ima get it even worse

Yeah, we looked at Wake as well. My alma mater William&Mary is technically a state school and out of state is now about $76k a year. I think even Penn State is up to $60k out of state.

Yeah law school can be rough. Going to a top law school and finishing at the top of one's class is key.

Penn State is one of the leading contenders right now. We are in state and it's a great school with a great alumni network. I'm trying not to push her but I have expressed all of the positives and she's very interested. She's an honor roll student at a really good private school, so I think she has a solid shot at a scholarship. I worked at PSU for 8 years and I think she has a solid shot at at least a partial scholarship. This is all happening so fast. :sigh:

That is an excellent choice given the value you get. My nieces and nephews all go or went there and they loved it. State College is a great college town as well.

Everyone should fight tooth and nail against "free college”. You think the price of college is bad now? What do you think will happen when you COMPLETELY remove the last small remaining incentives for colleges to keep costs down.

Starting off workers with enormous debt is the greatest invention the federal government came up with. The price of college was reasonable before the government decided to step in and make it more "affordable” by guaranteeing loans

It's not for everyone...

Have you guys set up 529s? I'm hoping that eases the pain a bit when the time comes but still I'm sure it's gonna suck to get em through it loan free.
