Doug Pederson offers advice to Nick Sirianni as Jaguars coach prepares to return to Philadelphia

If anybody knows the highs and lows of serving as coach of the Eagles, it's Doug Pederson.

He won a Super Bowl while at the helm in Philadelphia. And he also oversaw a meltdown so severe, he infamously voiced his frustrations on local sports-talk radio before eventually departing.

Pederson returns to Philadelphia this weekend when his Jaguars (2-6) take on the Eagles (5-2) at Lincoln Financial Field -- where a statue of him and Super Bowl LII MVP quarterback Nick Foles stands outside. He's looking forward to taking the trip back to the City of Brotherly Love, where he'll face a coach he felt he should assist in taking over for him in 2021.

Yes, Pederson participated in an informal transition, giving Nick Sirianni the inside information on the Eagles, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports.

"It's a tough business," Pederson said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Just to be a resource, you know, just to be somebody there. I did it for five years and I was an assistant coach there for a long time and really just to be there if he had any questions he could just ask me. It's just a respect thing. It's hard enough to be a head coach in this league. Any advice I could give a first-time head coach, I was going to do it."

Sirianni has experienced his own highs and lows in his three-and-a-half seasons with the Eagles, leading a rapid turnaround that landed them in Super Bowl LVII. But unlike Pederson, Sirianni didn't return with a Lombardi Trophy, and after a colossal collapse to end the 2023 season, he's felt the heat that can be rather intense in Philadelphia.

Pederson is very familiar with that warmth. Like he did when he left, he offered Sirianni words of advice this week.

"From the outside looking in, I think he's handled it well," Pederson said. "My advice is you've just kind of got to keep going every single day, man. You've just got to keep your head down, plowing forward, just do your job. Get your team ready to go for another game. And you know, you can't control anything other than that as a head coach.

"That's my advice to myself and that's my advice to him. Just continue to keep doing the job you're doing. You've got to trust your ability, you've got to trust what you're doing, what you're teaching, how you're preparing your football team and you've got to stick with that and I think he's done a good job at that."

Sirianni has learned some lessons in the last year, especially when it comes to interacting with fans. He was demonstrative after a win over the Chiefs in Kansas City -- which didn't age well after the Eagles' late-season meltdown -- and even chirped at some critical home fans seated behind the Eagles' bench after a win earlier this month.

Since then, the Eagles appear to have regained their swagger, rolling to two straight runaway wins. They'll be tested by the Jaguars on Sunday, which won't include a Pederson visit to the statue bearing his likeness.

"No, it's on the other side of the stadium. You want me to tailgate, too, and just say hi to people?" Pederson joked.

Run?  They spend a lot of time standing around.

Not really.

The "down time” in soccer is still spent moving. For instance, when in possession, defenders are still adjusting their position in relation to the ball and the attacking players to simultaneously receive a back pass while also being able to recover against a counter attack.

They measure it. They are basically sprinting about half of the 7 to 8 miles per game, while the rest is done in defense adjusting to ball position (basically shifting laterally, or sprinting to press the opposition).

There is no bench to sit down and even if you do get subbed out it’s not until around halfway through the second half.

It's interesting how opinions flip flop from game to game though. People were hyping up Stroud and saying he's better than Hurts. Early in the game last night, saying the Jets were trash and the game was over. Then Stroud didn't play well and the Jets took over and won. After, people saying Stroud is not as good as they thought, disappointing, and noting all his flaws and things he has to improve.

In another game the Jets will stink and Stroud will play well. You can't base things off 1 game but the performance throughout the season. Some players or teams have down games. What matters is bouncing back from a bad game. Stroud is a solid young player who will only get better.

Based on the sample size from both, I would still take Stroud in a heartbeat provided that option.  However, I gladly ate my crow last weekend when Hurts looked fantastic.  That's by far the best he's looked since the SB, and I'm definitely encouraged.  I can't speak to whether or not Stroud will be a stud in this league for the long term, because they are such a rare breed nowadays.  You literally have Mahomes.  That's it in my opinion.  Every other QB right now is constantly hit or miss almost every single weekend.  Like - are you kidding me that the Browns beat up on Lamar last week?

From a high level overview I think QB play is just so much worse than it used to be.  Like I said, I really think Mahomes is it, and that's honestly only bc he wins with nothing around him.  He doesn't look good most of the time doing it anymore either (not like that truly matters).  20 years ago, we had consistency week to week, even years with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Rothlispuke, Rivers to an extent, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson in his prime, Brett Favre, then Aaron Rodgers.  These guys played the position differently than anyone plays it today.  There weren't adjustments to be made against them.  They were gashing your defense no matter what, and no offseason of defensive adjustments would matter.

I don't know if these guys are just developed different now in college (1st read only, run, run, run), or if there were different breeds of QBs then.  Maybe defenses are just too fast now to go through progressions, so it's better just to scheme the 1st man open.  Regardless of the right answer, you still eat your own toejam and store your hot farts in tupperware containers.

Another example - Jayden Daniels.  To listen to the talking heads, this dude's bust in Canton is already being cast.

Players also have ups and downs in their career and go elsewhere and are better off. There was a time people laughed at Baker Mayfield.

Perfect example of my last post.  Defenses will absolutely adjust to this guy, whether during this season or in the offseason, and at some point he will absolutely have to slow down and make his own adjustments.

My main point was not judging performance based on one game. And there are guys that play well in stretches and get anointed. RG3 was the next big thing his rookie year. Andrew Luck and Trevor Lawrence were assumed to be elite when they came out. Our own Hurts had a great 2022 season which so far has been an outlier. He even had a solid stretch of several great games last year before the collapse. He had a great game last week, let's see how the rest of the season goes.

Some fans were glad to see Reddick go, don't overpay. Last night some fans saw him play and said we wish we had him back. Fans are fickle. When a player performs badly the haters come out of the woodworks to say I told you so, and the opposite happens when he plays well.

It's about consistency and long-term success. And for some, finding new life going to another team. Sometimes they're just in the wrong scheme or situation.

The old Kevin Kolb automatic response to pressure.  Stroud is a weird one, he looks every part of his ‘draft report’ this year after darn near winning ROTY and MVP last year.

Defenses caught up to him.   Now he has to adjust to their adjustments.

I'm sure this was discussed last night, but I wouldn't have called that second Garrett Wilson TD a catch.  Didn't they disallow a TD catch last Sunday because a player got one foot down twice, but not the other one (Pickens, I think)?  Wilson's shin came down in bounds (on the same leg) but his knee touched down out of bounds.

I'd be inclined to allow one foot and knee coming down, but I don't agree with shin.  That looked like a non-catch to me in real time, and seeing the replay I still don't think it should be ruled a catch.  The Rules Committee should change that.

I agree with not judging performances based on 1 game.  It shouldn't happen like that.  However, it's so much harder NOT to judge performances game to game now.  20 years ago, your potential franchise QB had a limitless leash.  If he sucked, oh well, it's his rookie or 2nd year.  Give him time to develop.  Now, they are given up on so quickly.  Plus we have so much more at our fingertips to judge performances minutely and in crazy amounts of detail.  It makes for a "no patience" mentality, which could be a reason QB play is just so much worse now.

Yep. You always hear experts, players and coaches say young QBs need time yet they aren't given enough time.

I think back to Peyton's rookie year, when their offensive philosophy was, "We invested so much in you, go out there and F up.  Throw as many interceptions as you want, and just go do your thing and figure it out."

It's a good game to rest Goedert and Slay.

If the Eagles can't beat the Jags without them, they're not going very far this season.

I'm starting to question overall how important Goedert is to this actual roster.  I'm a self-admiited Goedert slurper.  I think he's an inredible tight end and one of the best blockers I've ever seen at the position.  Whether there just aren't enough targets for him, Hurts doesn't see him, or he's just incredibly inconsistent week to week as a pass catcher, he has the talent to be one of the best.  However, with his yearly 4+ games missed, and the performance of this team the last 2 weeks, how bad do we even really need a high priced tight end?  I thought he was essential to their run game, and maybe he still is against better opponents, but it didn't matter at all these past few weeks.

That new realignment only makes too much sense.  My only gripe with it is that I live my life despising and loathing the Dallas Cowboys and their fans to the point where it's a major part of my lifestyle.  I would miss that a lot.

Hurt me cause I’d always go to eagles/cardinals games out here. Then again they haven’t won much out in Arizona when i go so maybe better

You can still do that, most of the country does!

When they realigned, they really should have taken into consideration Eagles fans that might be living in Arizona.

There is no time with these QB contracts. You need to know if he is the guy as soon as possible before their salary blows up or the next class of QBs comes out
