Our schedule for the rest of the year just got a lot easier.

The Steelers are pretty equal to the Commanders, whom we handled with ease. The Rams might present a challenge, but we get some extra rest before facing them and they have to travel across the country on Sunday. The Panthers, Giants and Cowboys are on life support.

So the only game that is a reasonable challenge is the Ravens.

It should be an interesting battle for the number one seed.

Let’s talk about Baun and Dean.  Hurtt and the DTs deserve a ton of credit for the play of the off ball LBs. Hear me out.  A lot of bad vibes on Davis but he requires double teams most of the time and Carter is Carter.  Additionally solid play from the DT/DEs and backups.  Josh Sweat, BG and of late, Nolan Smith are occupying the OTs.  Real risk to block them with a TE.  That keeps Baun and Dean clean most of the time.  That has enabled them to range and fill there gap assignments.  Pretty much the same for DeJean, who plays nickel like a S with CB skills or a CB with S skills.

Now, consider that next season the Eagles may lose Baun, Sweat and BG.  Something Howie needs to consider as he explores extensions.

Losing BG will be unfortunate, but even good things must come to an end.  However, when you look forward to the 2025 Draft what positions other than Edge rusher need attention?

QB1 and QB2 are covered with Hurts and McKee
RB2 is a need, but certainly not before Edge
WR is solid
TE is solid
The O-Line has Fred Johnson and Steens as backups behind five very solid starters.  A Day 3 developmental Stoutland project is a possiblity
Edge is the clear #1 and probably #2 need.  Howie could use both Round 1 and Round 2 on Edge, just as he did for CB this Draft
DT is solid
ILB is solid if Howie extends Baun (who by the way zoomed up to 2nd in the NFL for tackles last night)
CB has Mitchell, Rogers, and DeJean (assuming Rogers gets extended) and probably one more year of Slay
Safety is solid

Howie's eyes are clearly on Edge ... without any distractions. And Parsons isn't out of the realm of possibility as a future Eagles Edge.

Eagles will have 32M in cap space next year. Project 10M for rookies + 5M for reserves for about 17M. Will save money post June1 cuts for Bradberry and likely restructure/trade of Goedert.

We will want to be in the comp pick game, so no free agents but resignings. Only extension candidates are Jurgens, Baun and Williams.

Can easily fit Zach Baun in if we let Milton Williams walk.

They will carry over around $10 million from this year. They will also save money from Sweat's contract, whether he walks or gets extended.

Around $50 million in cap space is what they will have.

I think Davis is grossly underrated, because he's the anchor of the base defense who allows Carter to do his thiing.

He consistently took on double teams and held his ground, that allows the LBs to flow to the ball and the safeties to play deep.

If he's playing 40% of snaps, it means he's doing his job b/c they're getting opposing offenses into 2nd and 3rd and long on a regular basis, which is when he comes off the field.

To further that he allows them to stay in nickel and still stop the run

Wash tried to run us out of nickel and failed

Gainwell is underappreciated.  Damn good pass pro, good vision and nice burst. Lacks size but doesn’t play like it.

I tend to believe he’s the most underrated player on the team. He’s a good role player.

It's so refreshing to have a young, fast, aggressive, good defense again. Feels like it's been forever.

I am not saying it'll happen, but imagine what this defense could become if you added Parsons to the line.

We struggled to beat Cleveland and Jacksonville for various reasons. I think we’re getting a little cocky.

The split back veer would be awesome to see at the pro level. Not as a regular offensive approach but as a change of pace in certain situations. With the right defensive front it’s fairly straight forward how to defend it, but yes like they say, give it time, one of those plays would hit big especially if it caught the defense off guard.

The ghost of Bill Yeoman smiled at this. (Go Coogs).   Love to see that with VanSummeren and Barkley in the backfield.  Grew up watching some great running football with Royal’s (and my school’s) Wishbone, Yeoman’s Veer and because my dad went there, Osborne’s Power I.   The Jack Pardee came to the Houston Gamblers with Mouse Davis and ran the Run n Shoot. When the Gamblers folded and Yeoman became the AD, Pardee, Mouse and (June Jones as QB coach) brought that offense to UH.

Carter seems to be doing just fine in the 50-60% of the defensive snaps where Davis isn't next to him. I'm not seeing some big drop off that you seem to be implying.

I’m rewatching part of the game since I can’t sleep. Calcaterra’s recovery of Goedert’s fumble prevented what could have been a major momentum shift for the Commanders. A great heads-up play.

Also, after double-checking the spelling of Calcaterra's name via a quick Google search, I realized I had no idea what the hell he actually looked like and was shocked when I saw this:

😂

Did you know that Calcaterra is one of a set of triplets?

I think you could swap him with most bench rbs in the league and never notice. What exactly is he good at?

But given how Steen played and his low cost, do we really need him? His balance just seems bad to me. Ends up on the ground far too much

If Becton ends up on the ground far too much, Stoutland is no doubt working nonstop on fixing that ... with the advantage that as a result Becton (and his agetnt) are acutely aware of both that weakness and how much playing for Stoutland rather than a different OL coach will prolong Becton's career.  Add to that, the fact that Becton has to feel a certain amount of thanks to the Eagles for resurrecting his career from the trash can, and I think Howie can sign Becton for a team friendly deal.

Also, you can not have too much O-Line depth.

I’d add I’m betting there’s some guys who get restructured to clear some more space. Don’t have the contracts in front of me too look but I’m guessing guys like Dickerson, mailata and devonta smith. @LeanMeanGM is pretty good at knowing contracts that are capable of restructuring to open some more space

I tend to agree and he is young. I just think Steen is just as good and maybe better for far less cap. Paying becton has an opportunity cost

I loved the game plan Fangio had set out there. The DL played the edges quite well and kept Daniels in the pocket and forced him to pass the ball. The DL had consistent pressure all night and caused Daniels to throw quick. I think washington's WR's had less than 30 yards receiving. Everything was kept in front of them and they were able to limit the big plays. If washington was going to have success on the ground, make it someone else other than Daniels.

All that was true until the last Washington drive.  Things got a little loose on that drive.  They need to play the same way from Kickoff to final whistle.

It depends on how much you pay him.  I trust Howie and Stoutland to make the best decision on Becton.

I think he’s damn good at trap plays. Been that way his entire career. He’s a good passing down back, but it’s just not a role we really emphasize. In pass pro, he’s spotty.

It seems like most people in here thinks he sucks. He’s not a starter, but he’s a good role player.

I have been critical of Hurts when I think he's played like trash, and positive when he's playing well. I try to just call it like it is. Hurts had a rough stretch earlier in the season but has improved lately. He still makes some mistakes and he's not an elite QB or passer. But he still also makes great throws and he's greatly improved on not turning the ball over. He does enough to win.

Last night you saw that Hurts:

  • Stayed in the pocket and made throws many times, didn't bail on every play as fans suggest
  • Completed passes to the middle of the field
  • Getting receivers in stride with accurate throws
  • Threw to other receivers besides AJ Brown. AJ had 8 targets, Smith had 6, Goedert 5, Dotson 2, Barkley 3, Gainwell 1

He has to continue to improve and play smarter, and perform against tougher teams and in the playoffs. I'm not saying he's great, not excusing the bad plays. Just saying that the fans that just say he's nothing but trash are just blind to anything he does well.

Out of this 2025 list of Eagles FA's, the "must sign" list is...

Zack Baun

That's it. We're in good shape and will have some opportunities to improve at spots where players are leaving. I really, really really, think this defense becomes an immovable object once it gets a game wrecking DE.

Rodgers is a "must sign" for me.

I do think we wore them down

that last td barkley was untouched. Becton and mailata just washed their guys down

Speaking of that last Barkley touchdown, was anyone else disturbed or worried that he let go of the ball before he crossed the goal line? Yes, it was a legit score but he didn't have to cut it so close.

The problem is you can restructure for space by converting base salary into a bonus that is amortized over 5 years. But Howie has already structured contracts with minimum bse salaries and large option bonuses, so there isn't anything to restructure. The only base salary over $3mm in 2025 is Jordan Davis, and that is fully guaranteed already.
