And if Hurts continues to look like he did last night, the offensive scheme will start looking like 2023 again.

You think so?

He made some amazing clutch throws and plays. They are being overshadowed (especially around here) because of the mistakes he made.

The dime to AJ for 60+ yards could not be thrown better.

The first TD dime pass to Saquon could not have been thrown better.

And there were quite a few more.

His major mistakes were him trying to make something out of nothing and can be corrected, imo.

It was only unstoppable with Kelce IMO.

And it was just about as unstoppable with Wentz at QB with Kelce and they weren't all bunched in, allowing for more wrinkles off the fake sneak look than they are running now with the Push.   They are locked in on this and get tunnel vision when its short yardage.  3rd and short yardage are opportunities to consider being more aggressive for a big play, rather than just looking to move the chains.   Having something like that (with Kelce) in your back pocket allows you to be aggressive on 3rd down, knowing that an incompletion on 3rd down still leaves you with the option to come back to it on 4th down.  But, this team seems almost content to do the Push on 2nd down!  Or at times, play calling on 2nd down in order to set it up for 3rd.   And that's just a losing mentality in play calling.  It's almost like playing "not to lose".  It needs to be fixed and I was hoping Moore coming in we'd see a much different short yardage offense, once again, especially with the investment in Barkley this offseason!  That might have been the most disappointing thing from last night.

the moment Jalen tried to become smarter about taking hits was the moment he got worse as a QB.

He isnt a good enough runner to make people miss, and if hes not going to run over and through tacklers to get 1st downs, his legs just arent really a threat. Nobody minds a QB sliding after just a 2 yard run.

And when hes not a running threat, his passing ability isnt good enough to lead an offense. He needs to be the dual threat.

We cant really worry about him taking hits. If we want MVP level Jalen then we need to throw caution to the wind and root for him to get back to being a physical runner.

He still got banged up last year protecting himself. He didn't have anywhere to run yesterday. Seems like they were playing to take his runs away first.

C'mon man. It's been one game. He's been the same player for five years, minus the one season, but it's only been one game.

Him making bone headed decisions, being afraid of the pocket, turning the ball over and rolling to his right for little to no gain or a throw out of bounds is far from the norm.

Wait.

It really seems like a speed rush bending around the outside shoulder of the OT was impossible on this turf last night.  Probably speaks to the lack of diversity of what both Smith and Huff can do, but still…their best asset was taken away.

BG’s best option at this point in his career is to get under an OTs pads and drive him back…which is something that still works on this surface.

A power rusher needs to be the #1 priority in the 2025 draft. Graham will be gone. Sweat is probably gone. Huff, Smith and Hunt are undersized. We need more girth at EDGE.

Agreed. He needs to learn that he doesn't need to play hero ball and the check down is his friend with all of these weapons. He's still locking in in AJ and Smitty for bail outs. He threw some dimes at times though which is encouraging.

If the mistakes get corrected, then onward and upward.  But there were times last night where the consensus was do whatever you want with the football besides letting Hurts touch it, throw it, or have any intellectual control over the play.

When that happens and you can’t get past it, the install stops, the playbook closes, and welcome back to pop warner.  The coaches transition from scheming to penguin feeding plays to the QB.

A TE not far  behind

Could be... we don't know yet... a bit premature to go one way or the other this early given the changes. Love looked just as bad. Difference is the Eagles were dropping the passes Love was throwing to them. Sloppy all around IMO.

Week one is typically sloppy so yeah I don’t think there’s any need to panic. But I do think we should be concerned that he looked a lot like the 2023 Jalen.

I'm still confused with what the heck they want to do with Dallas Goedert. If he's such a mismatch and a top TE in the NFL, why does it seem like 90% of his targets come on dump offs in the flat? Where are the seam routes, the slants from the slot and the wheel routes? There seems to be little to no creativity to utilize him and get him in favorable matchups.

Dude what are you talking about.... they were still passing with Hurts to close out the game to the dismay of everyone who wanted the ball in Saquon's hands. Coaches don't do that with a QB they don't trust.

They scout for ankle flexion in Edge rushers.  That trait was taken away last night.

Imagine your cornerbacks having their hip swivel taken away.

I give Hurts credit for a really good throw there.  Key is to get the ball there before the safety can get involved

That one and the wheel route were A+ throws in a C- game. Thankfully we played against Jordan Love who had a D+ game.

He's been a turnover machine. That's the biggest problem. Protect the damn ball and live another play.

Reminded me of the damn Superbowl smh. They were slipping all over thr place

Why does Hurts look fast in practice and slow in games

He's never looked fast to me, even during his run up to the super bowl. Last year he was noticeably slower though.

Neutral:

Edge rushers.  They were completely invisible.  But the GB edge rush didn’t do much outside of lining up in the neutral zone and catching Lane sleeping.  This was a really bad surface for anyone who likes to bend around the edge.  Unplayable, almost.  I think it’s only fair to defer their evaluation for another week.

I'd put that into the 'bad' category (or at least "concerning").  GB likely wasn't rushing hard on the edges, in order to keep Hurts contained (we've seen it before).  So, the rush had to come up the middle and let him try to run out of the pocket, where the DEs would be waiting for him.   And it worked.  He only got one run of any significance by scrambling the entire game.   Meanwhile, Bryce Huff was a complete non-factor.  Did he actually play?  I don't remember seeing him on the field AT ALL.  That's bad.  Carter had a couple nice rushes, but few and far between.   Not great.   Nolan Smith provided nothing of consequence as a pass rusher.  They did manage 2 sacks... both from Zach Baun, and the second one coming in the desperation Hail Mary situation, against the ice cold backup QB to end the game.   Not the type of performance that they got in 2022 with that really impressive pass rush.

Silver lining - only 1 game.  And if I recall correctly, Reddick started that year not doing much for the first two games and then broke out after that to record 19, IIRC, including the playoffs.  We'll see if this becomes a trend, or if its just a one-off.

I've seen enough Avonte Maddox.

Yes and it was almost picked

The turnovers are the biggest issue. He’s has 23 in his last 18 regular season starts. Too many. Have to take care of the ball better and not make poor decisions like his two ints yesterday.

He had someone underneath wide open on both of those plays which is the frustrating part

The Eagles punted twice and scored 34.  I think maybe people overreact to bad plays in drives that actually end up in points.  That said the mistakes are the most worrisome and really hope to see less of those next game

One of my favorite plays from last night was when they were lined up in an empty set.  GB sends a blitzing LB.  Hurts hits Calcaterra on a 5-yard stop route that turns into an 11-yard gain.

        2-10-GB 33 (14:57) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass short right to G.Calcaterra to GB 22 for 11 yards (J.Bullard).

They had a solution to the blitz.

Meh - he had a few tough plays but seemed to come back strong later in the game.

Might be time to transition him to a safety role when some of the other DB’s get back.
