You saw him struggle with the blitz last night? In which particular play because I think I counted only two blitzes from the pack and he beat one of them with a throw to AJ for a 20 yard gain.

He was okay against the blitz last night.

One night doesn't negate all of the bad previously though, yeah?

I’m sure this will get talked about when there’s a good breakdown, but i felt like i saw BG inside a lot last night.  Davis seemed like a no show and i felt like he was taken out on passing downs.

He should be taken out on passing downs.

So...

- We were the better team down to down, but turnovers kept it close
- We severely outcoached the Packers from a game management perspective
- Hurts outplayed Jordan Love

It's odd.  Graham playing more and Huff less feels like an adaptation to the turf...maybe a smart one.  I'd think that should translate to some creative usage of Milton Williams...who has the get off of a DE but can really bull rush.  Yet he barely sniffed the field.

Davis wasn't bad...he stood out a couple times clogging running plays.  But it's clear they just view him as a non factor with pass rush and collapsing the pocket.  And their net run defense still stunk.  So even though Davis looked good in that capacity, it's not like they had team-level success there.

He had a few plays where he beat the blitz, but i did feel like he was very panicked in the pocket for a lot of the game.  I was pounding happy dad’s last night though, so my observation skills did decline a bit as the 3rd got underway.

Cold take.

2018 Malcom was the best we saw of him.  Rod was consistent and steady, much like Mikel during his Eagles tenure.

Hurts is mentally tougher than Wentz. Wentz wasn't bleeding 7minutes of clock + getting a FG on that final drive.

I hope the coaches stop asking Hurts to be Peyton Manning and call some damn straight-ahead runs.

The issues Hurts is showing are concerning.  It isn't about how he compares to Wentz.  Wentz has been gone for 4 years.  We can stop invoking him to prop up Hurts' bad play.  Hurts needs to fix his issues.  Carson Wentz is more than completely irrelevant to this equation, though the variance in weapons available to each one is polar opposites.

  • Hurts has to know how to protect the ball in the red zone.
  • Hurts has to know the situation before the end of the half and not take a bad sack when the option to throw the ball away and preserve the final timeout is there.
  • Hurts has to learn how to use the middle of the field.  Last night's throw chart showed about 4 or 5 throws between the hashes, and two of them were picks.  Did he get even one completion over the middle?

Might be patella dislocation like Mahomes had several years ago. As long as the patella is not torn(and I don't think it is, that's a painful one, he wouldn't be walking) he should be able to return at some point. Probably in October.

So all that talk about hurts being incredibly accurate in camp, one pick on the last day, blah blah blah.

2 turnovers and almost a 3rd with a fumbled snap. Same issues holding the ball, trying to bail to the right. Terrible RPO reads. Incredibly slow when he runs. Actually a liability when he’s moving around behind the LOS. He’s got all that talent around him and he’s clearly the reason we are crippled offensively

Now...ignoring QB until next week:

What is the LB situation?  Is there a problem brewing with White?  Sure seems like Baun and Dean earned the right to start next week.

Is Rodgers back as CB3 next week?  Does CB3 mean Rodgers outside and Q in the slot?  Are we really going to ask a rookie (even if he's a great one) to move all over the field instead of get comfortable in one spot?  Fangio literally said he doesn't want to ask him to do that, but might have to.

I don't want to make too much of CJGJ's (terrible) game.  I expected Blankenship to be the problem and CJGJ to lock it down.  But the bottom line is that we had 2 of 5 full time DB's look terrible last night and one of the best ones, Blankenship, isn't going to do that every week.  So it really shouldn't be THAT hard or unfounded to find ways to get Ringo and Dejeane on the field.  Ringo is too talented and this secondary is not good enough for him to somehow get caught up in a numbers game and have his career stagnate.

After a night's sleep I find myself much more positive in outlook.

Hurts was lousy. I'll stick with that. However, it's a new system and he's not into it yet. He resorted to old bad habits but they can be broken. Example: on the INT in the end zone, he bailed from a clean pocket. The throw across the body was bad but he should have stayed in the pocket. AJ Brown was wide open coming across the middle. He missed seeing several open receivers short and bailed. The system gives him options but he resorted to last year's nonsense. They can drill that out of him.

Lane had his problems but the sack by Rashan Gary that looked so bad was on the ref, who should have flagged the DT for encroachment.

The OL was disjointed at times but Man!! What Talent! As the game wore on they became better and better. Becton was a beast at RG. Also, he did what Seumalo often did two years ago - pull and pass block to the left side. On the TD pass to Saquon, he did that. You can see it on the replay even before the All-22 comes out. And he's a monster in the run game. As for the tush push, with maybe the two most powerful guards in the league bracketing Jurgens, there's no reason to abandon it. Jurgens just needs a few more reps in it. His timing was off all night. He'll get better. And how sweet is it, when the game is on the line and there's 7+ minutes left to drive the field and get the FG with just 27 seconds let? Those long drives, I just love 'em. Notice that GB's runs were mostly wide while ours were mostly inside zone and power?

A bunch of blown coverages but the secondary is so much faster than last year's. Fangio's system takes some time to absorb but he's got talent to work with. Folks here are busting on Maddox but he slipped on the one deep out. Everybody slipped. Terrible field. Guys who rely on quickness were really hamstrung, notably Huff and Smith.

There were a number of mistakes on run fits but even so, the LB play was very encouraging. Baun was fantastic. On Blankenship's INT, credit goes to Baun as well. I thought Dean played well, showed good recognition and quick reactions.

Way more positives than negatives.

I'm not sure on Dean. Would need someone who understood his assignments to say whether he was in wrong lane at times. Looked like it to me but I don't know

There are so many options in secondary.  I think they should leave Q outside.  Try to get DeJean up to speed in next few weeks.  Eventually Sidney Brown will be healthy as well and in mix.

People are reading way too much into the first game, played on a bad field.

RPOs were probably not a good call on this field, b/c harder to get players to over pursue when they struggle with that first step.

Receivers were sliipping and sliding.

Hurts was making an effort to throw over the middle, maybe too much of an effort.

I'm not going to panic when my QB leads my team to 34 points and 406 net yards against a good team. And if Dean makes that pick six, possible Eagles win by double digits.

Given the investment and position he was drafted at, you would hope this wouldn’t be the case.

Did you actually feel badly after an exciting win?

The Eagles punted twice and scored 34.  I think maybe people overreact to bad plays in drives that actually end up in points.  That said the mistakes are the most worrisome and really hope to see less of those next game

They punted only twice because they turned the ball over 3 times.

Crippled?

34 points against a good team isn’t crippled.

If Baun and Becton continue to play at high levels, they would be two prime candidates for extensions

That's why he was picked as high as he was in the draft.   That's who he can be... if he can stay healthy.

Some is better than none i guess.  A huge stretch to say too much effort though.  Hopefully the trend goes up and he remembers to use that 33% of the field he typically hasn’t in the past.

We just beat a playoff team on a neutral field. Some people are just miserable. They think if things don't work out for the Eagles they can take solace with an 'I told you so' prize

We had a bunch of those last year early and I was never particularly happy about them. Too much fool's gold. This year, I see a loaded offense, a great OL, and a much more talented defense. There were a lot of mistakes but the talent is there and it is young. I think they'll get much better.

I totally get criticizing Hurts' critical mistakes but he was a good passer overall last night and to me looked like the better QB. Again you can't ignore the mistakes but I don't see  dramatic limitations

Overall, he was OK. The mistakes he made would be defensible if he was a 1st year starter. However, he's in his 5th year and is in the top 10 salaries for QBs. The INT's were terrible and he nearly threw a horrible pick 6. He still gives ground and rolls right way too much and instantly eliminates half the field. These are the same mistakes he's been making his entire career so it tells me either A. he's too stubborn to change or B. he's not learning from his mistakes.

It was game 1. He wasn't terrible but he also didn't fill me with tons of confidence. Let's hope that Kellen Moore says OK, no more RPO, no more tush push and continues to use motion in the passing game.

Not necessarily excuses but reality:

- No preseason snaps for 1st team offense in pre-season

- New offense and defense

- 10 hour plane ride to Brazil - also dealing with a bunch of nonsensical rumors that it could be "dangerous” for them, smh

- Slick field

Still managed to score 34 points and come through in the end.

The top two 'excuses' go hand in hand as stupid.   New offense and defense means you need to maximize reps.   Organizationally, they chose not to.   The bottom two things they had no control over.  The top one was an issue that they could have used to counter #2.

I give absolutely ZERO regard to self-inflicted stupidity.  They chose to sit starters in PS, despite knowing they had new systems to install.  That's like giving Plaxico Burress a pass for shooting himself in the leg 'on accident' in the club.  He's the one that brought the gun to the club in the first place, and apparently doesn't know how to put the safety on.  He was 100% stupid.   And so were the Eagles for their decision to sit their starters when reps were available to be had to mitigate the second factor.

The early bye works in their favor this season.

4 games to see what they have, then two weeks to hammer out the kinks.

They're deep enough and young enough that resting players is less important than getting everyone on the same page for a stretch run.

But they're not rushing Barkley 24 times on a regular basis if they want him around for the playoffs.
