Nothing.  Let him walk and draft their next QB.

Exactly. And that wasn’t the same coaching staff or front office that drafted him. So they could’ve just walked away It wasn’t their guy. Daniel jones was 2-6 vs. winning teams that year and really didn’t look great in a bunch of those games. Because they prove they could win with Daniel Jones, I think the fan base would’ve given them more time to go out and find the right quarterback. I have no problem with the team comes to me and says we don’t think Daniel Jones can win us a Super Bowl so we don’t wanna pay all this money. We rather go and find that quarterback then pay a ton of money to a guy that is not bad enough to get us that quarterback, but not good enough to win us a Super Bowl.

One more post on the game -- it's amazing we won despite really trying to give the game away

- Turnovers in our own end of the field on our first 2 possessions, but defense hold them to 6 points

- Dean drops a pick 6, 70 yard TD by Green Bay on the next play (14 point swing)

- Hurts throws a pick in the end zone when we could have gone up 8 or 12

- Fumbled snap on BS that could have put us up 9

We basically left 14 points on the field (Dean drop, Hurts INT, BS snap leads to FG instead of TD) and gifted them 7 (play after Dean drop). A 21 point potential total swing, and we still won by 5. I know this is somewhat unfair, but to have all that and still win is very impressive.

The issues that I came away with were, in the near term, 1) QB/C operation, 2) Pass rush from the Edge, and 3) NCB.  These can and should be addressed as early as week 2.

The area of concern that may linger is Hurts' decision making.  I remember how impressive Vick would look, except for protecting himself and the ball.  We'd all assume that he would eventually learn how to slide or tuck the ball.  Never happened.  That is what worries me with Hurts.

Honestly, the move was to franchise tag Jones and get a deal done with Barkley. And if you couldn't get a deal with Barkley...you live with it if he walks. Instead they tagged Barkley, kept him one year, and then lost him anyway, but crippled the cap with Jones for 2.5 years.

Move on or just franchise tag him. I’m fine if you  franchise tag him and see if you repeats it in 2023. If you repeated it in 2023, then you can have the discussion about having a contract extension. Yes you’ll be paying more but at least you would know it wasn’t a one year fluke. I’m much rather have to spend a little extra to know it was not a fluke. Like I said before the Giants schedule really benefited them and Daniel jones in 2022.

Agree on all 3 areas, and I'd add the run defense (though it didn't appear to be as bad as the numbers suggest). In reverse order:

1. NCB -- I would live with Maddox until after the bye, when hopefully DeJean is ready. Q looked so solid at outside CB, I'd rather not bump him inside to get Rodgers on the field. But I think Vic will actually do that -- he will want the 3 best players on the field. So I think we see Q in the slot and Rodgers on the outside for a while. Then we reassess at the bye.

2. Pass rush from the edge -- Sweat, BG and NS at least all got pressure in a tough environment given the field conditions. Huff...I am very concerned.

3. QB/C + Hurts -- I think the QB/C stuff will improve with more reps. My optimism with Hurts is that he was able to play smart football in 2021 and 2022. It feels like he keeps pressing to try and justify the contract. They need to just keep telling him to take what's there. I'm more concerned he looked slow again, but I hope that was the field.

So what’s the deal with Dotson?

Is this just a case of him getting traded late and getting up to speed?

If Brown doesn't slip in the end zone, are we even having this conversation?

Most likely. Plus, both AJ and Smitty went off. I think we can't really judge Dotson for a few weeks. If it is still like this after the bye, then it's an issue.

That’s my area of concern. I said it in the off-season that this was a big year for Jalen hurts. He had to prove that his turnover/decision-making was closer to 2022 and not last year where he was up and down. I think the next couple weeks will give us an indicator. It was week one so i am willing to give him more leeway. He should theoretically get better as the season continues and more game reps. If we’re still talking about the same thing in week 8 then we need to have a bigger discussion. Imo 23 turnovers in his last 18 regular season games is too many. I’d say the same thing with Josh Allen. I’ll say this with Josh Allen, I don’t think he can have that amount of turnovers this season. Because I don’t think their roster is as good as years past to overcome that amount.

Theres that, and the fact that Jalen doesnt get many targets to the #3 WR.

What should he have given him? Whoever is next up always seems to become the next highest paid QB. I agree he shouldn't have been given that big of a contract but what do you do when the market for QBs is so high?

You reset the market, because he's not a market setter type QB, or even close to it.  You tell him the truth.  We will pay you a fair salary that won't hamper the franchise and will free up more money to invest in players around you to help you and the team perform at a higher level.  We'll give you Geno Smith's contract.  3 years, $75M, and we'll take again in 2 years about an extension.

And get dusted in the playoffs by elite QBs.

Actually, if you look at his career playoff record, that's completely erroneous.

I was talking to my buddies about Brissett. He's got to be one of the most boring QB I've ever watched. He's made a nice career for himself being completely mediocre.

Expectations for Dotson need to be low. Not so much because of Dotson but more so because Hurts is going to Brown, Smith, Goedert first.

A) Bad decision regardless of outcome.

b) The ball was not thrown far enough to even reach Brown.  Alexander was a few yards in front of Brown's depth in the end zone.

Yes, he had 2 other near Int's that were bad decisions. He also fumbled on the tush push.

The best case scenario with that throw was AJ breaks up the INT.

Who was the hot QB at that time?

Browns started 5 different QBs last year on their way to 11-6.

Watson 5-1

Flacco 4-1

Dorian Thompson-Robinson 1-2

PJ Walker 1-1

Jeff Driskel 0-1

Yeah what is up with Hurts as a runner?  I'd like to know myself.  If that aspect of his game is non-existent he's going to have to get much better from the pocket.

Hurts looking slower as a runner isn't that big of a deal to me because I was hoping they'd cut down on his running anyway

So he could break up the pass but he couldn't catch it? I see logic is taking a vacation day today.

Random thoughts on other NFC "contenders"

- While they won the game, the Lions needed OT to beat a team that was missing both its tackles and 3 total offensive lineman is concerning. Stafford was getting mauled all night but somehow still managed to give the Rams a chance to win the game. His pick in the end zone was brutal, but other than that, he played an amazing game. It's not that the Lions offense was bad, but...they just never managed to pull away against a wounded team. Meanwhile, if the Rams get healthy, they might be a real threat. Hopefully Nacua isn't out for a while.

- Dallas saw a weakened opponent and drubbed them. I'm honestly not sure we learned much of anything about Dallas in that game, as Cleveland playing without both starting tackles against the Dallas pass rush was a joke. And Watson is not Matt Stafford. Watson looks like he got paid and is done. CLE can't cut him, but just bench him and roll with Jameis. 0-15 on throws down the field...you'd think he'd complete one by accident. The Browns may be headed to a terrible year.

- Losing Love is a huge blow for Green Bay's chances, which sucks as the overall NFC is weak and they should have been in a position to compete. Love also looked worse than the end of last year.

- The Falcons and the Bears better hope it was just a bad week. Wow. I think the Falcons are better than they showed, but not as good as people think. I remain convinced that Caleb will be a massive bust.

There was a lot of bad football in week 1. No one really stood out, other than I guess the Saints (didn't watch any of that game).

I loved Reddick as an Eagle, but man is he blowing this for himself.

It's not about the 2nd round pick (as that's gone now). Get paid Haason!

I think Howie definitely saw a potential issue with Reddick.  I really hope Huff works out, but it’s pretty easy to see where Howie’s mind was in this.  I’m not sure anyone was really aware of this, but Reddick clearly has a screw loose.  Anyone that thinks it’s logical to skip game checks, probably wouldn’t have listened to Fangio as much as he should if he stayed.

I'm going to go ahead and ask for forgiveness for the time I was saying Deion is going to be a great college coach. What a joke he's become. Everything he's done makes me dislike him even more. Shedeur is proving to be an apple that didn't fall far from the tree either. I'm glad they got curb stomped in Nebraska. I hope it continues.
