Probably last year during the collapse. DL has been trash for a while.

I heard on the radio last night that Jalen Carter did not start. Who did? And what was that about?

When Sweat says theyre not all on the same page- could Carter not starting indicate that he is being punished for freelancing out there?

I dont know how the eagles officially name the positions on their depth chart, but when you look at it online, they start 3 DTs on the DL.

Traditionally 3-4s, had 3-4 DEs which were bigger guys, but not DTs. I dont know how a team can seriously put Jordan Davis in a 3-4 DE position, and in general start 3 DTs and expect to have an explosive pass rush.

The scheme holds players back. I think these DTs would feast if they were bracketed by some DEs.

Then, the eagles throw Sweat out there next to the 3 DTs, and call him a LB.  They essentially run a 4-3 with only 1 DE. Thats not going to be explosive.

Then, youd think they should plug the run pretty well with that kind of personnel, but the LBs arent good enough. And a whole line made up of DTs is going to be too slow to stop outside runs while the LBs arent good enough to consistently get off blocks.

This scheme doesnt work. They need some real DEs here. And they still could use a star LB to play next to either Dean or Baun.

Yep, a 4-3 with REAL DE with Carter and Williams at DT could be lethal. Shoot, Carter, Williams, Ojomo and Booker rotating at DT in a 4-3 would cause problems. They are all penetrators. Problem is, you need real DE and good LB.

If you guys think the starters playing 20-25 preseason snaps is fixing this, you’re fooling yourself.

The defense should practice these 2 things all week:

How to tackle

how to stop the run

yeah... about that... it was never a scheme issue. It was and still is the QB.

It's going to be funny watching them fire Sirianni and anyone else they can before finally have to admit it.

When was the last time the eagles had a consistently good defense for longer than 2 years?

I don't think sirianni is the answer either.  every key decision he made last night was wrong.  And his team is saying they aren't on the same page.  not a good look.  he's got a lot of work to do and I'm not sure he's up for the job.

Sirianni continues to be all over the place with his decisions. This isn’t new either, he’s always been like this and giving the offense to Moore was supposed to stop it. It’s like every decision he makes is by flipping a coin on the sideline.

Dumb poorly coached team. Introductory press conference "we want a smart football team” … fast forward 4 years later - dumb as ****

91 & 92 Eagles were pretty special

Siri hands off we win anything else is secondary and can be worked on during the week

fortunately or unfortunately, that has to happen, and then we still have another year to suffer through this QB.

They can’t admit it with hurts until after 2025. They could try to move him like wentz but he has a NTC so have to convince him to waive it. So realistically earliest you can get out is 2026 offseason unless a team is willing to do a post June 1st trade next offseason.

not saying they should or shouldn’t do it. Just how his contract is structured

I look at it this way people crap all over Desai for what the defense looked like last year. meanwhile you brought in the master of the scheme. The same issues are there and guys who were here last year look about the same.

We can say yes personnel needs to be better. I don’t disagree. It’s been that way since last year. We also brought in the master of this scheme and ONE of the reason you brought him was to make guys already on this roster better with the personnel additions (that i don’t believe he had zero input on).

you and I have had this conversation before. A great defensive coordinator gets more out of less. We both have said that and agreed on it in the past. No offense i don’t see fangio doing that right now. Frankly, I didn’t think the personnel was all that great after the moves they made in the off-season. Personnel needs to be better. You want to consider someone a great DC then get more out of less. Don’t tell me the personnel was the problem. It was with Desai too. He didn’t get those excuses

I will say even with no pass rush and no run defense, the D still held its own when they got down inside the 20.  Atlanta had 15 points at that point.  The last drive was awful and shouldn't have happened.

Thoughts:

Overall, disappointing game.  Shades and flashbacks of last years end of season melt down are there and still apparent.  It’s a young season and hopefully they learn and grow. I’m not one for long posts…so I’m sure I’ll have more as the week goes on.

Coaching…will be beat to death over the next week.  Not much more to say, other than a C rate retread out coached this staff.

QB: Hurts was efficient for most of the game.  He was still below the ‘Mendoza line’ for QB’s though.  I get the game is changing but another sub 200 yard performance.  One thing of note, he’s gotten a lot of additional responsibilities this year with Kelce gone.  It’s too much for him.  Even in the hurry up he’s still scrambling with around 5 seconds on the play clock to get everything together.  He made some baffling decisions in the 1st quarter, but was ok enough from then on.  That’s his MO now since he became the undisputed starting QB.  1st quarter head scratchers, little to no offense for 15 mins and then things tend to come together a bit in the 2nd.  Furthermore, IDK if this is on the OL or not…but the OL might be too big.  IN the pocket he seems to do that Drew Brees tippy toes throws where he’s placing the ball instead of setting and throwing.  Lastly, he’s still ignoring the middle of the field.  1 read and panic.

RB: Barkley is amazing.  Was leaned on a bit too much IMO for a week 2 game.  Shipley hasn’t taken a meaningful snap this season on O.  I know we hate it, but him and Gainwell need to see the field and give him a bit of a break.

WR: Weird game, seems like there was no plan for Brown being out of the game.  Dotson got one look.  Covey probably got too many but was tough with the ball and got consistent yards at least.  Smith, he’s so good.  The dropped TD was on both parties, throw was in the wrong spot but we’ve seen Smitty come down with those before.  Fabulous play by the S.

TE: I gave up caring on the 1st or second drive when Grant C was lined up inside of DG on a run play.  Why?  Just why…. ALL 22 will show whether they could have been used better or not.

OL: Fantastic in the run game, struggled at times in pass pro with twists and stunts.  Lane’s age is showing at times and he’s starting to like mortal.  Overall, if they’re able to keep Becton for a few years at least the long term outlook is good.  I wonder if the plan is to draft for a fit at either RG/RT and then shift him depending on what they find.

DL: Beyond terrible.  Davis is useless. (One play i remember was the announcers noting him getting a run stop, when he actually was just tossed by the G and fell into the runner).  Carter was MIA most of the game.  Milton seemed to be always around the ball.  DE’s were a non factor, when i paid attention Smith seemed to play a bit more disciplined than I’ve ever seen.  Saw him get tossed a few times though despite seeming to set some good edges and maintain his gap discipline.

LB: Baun is an All 22 look, i didn’t notice him much, which can typically be a good thing.  I’ll reserve judgement because Dean was completely lost the entire game.  Constantly out of position, indecisive, a step or 2 behind in coverage.  Looked like a headless chicken running around.

CB: Overall i thought they were pretty good when not playing shell coverage.  Communication breakdown led to the TD Slay gave up.  IIRC a lot second motion seemed to cause confusion on who was covering the out.  Slay was flat footed and burned.  It happens in the RZ.  Mitchell is a player though.  Maddox on his lone highlight of the EZ break up was actually beat and slipped but made a decent recovery and was lucky he wasn’t flagged.  DeJawn had 1 or 2 snaps, can’t comment.

S: Burn the tape.  Outside of the 4th down stop, they seemed pretty terrible.  Ghost flies around and is always there, which is promising but had too many missed tackles.

O in general: Game plan at times made zero sense.  I’m curious if the first drive or 2 are solely meant to try and get Hurts going.  The inability to get 1st drive (or 1st quarter points) is alarming.  Not kicking the FG, another thing that will be beat to death.  I’m ok with the 3rd down throw at the end.  Barkley comes down with that and possibly the game is over, 4 point play there more than likely.

D in general: Nobody but the CB’s seem to be on the same page routinely.  This is a reason why there’s legit reasons to think about starting an experienced liability over Dean for the simple purpose of the green dot isn’t doing a good job.  I think the DL and LB’s are going in circles of hurting each others play.

Game plan without AJ looked cowardly, retreating back to our horizontal passes

I was going to say early 2000s. Eagles defense in 2017 and 2018 were goos particularly against the run and ppg. (Credit to Schwartz in 2018 cause that team had a boatload of injuries and by the saints playoff game he actually had them top 10 ppg allowed and top 3 rush defense). 2019 were 15th in ppg and bottom 5 pass defense. So it’s probably all the way back to Jim Johnson

If he and Siri dont have a good relationship, its best if Siri stays- making it more likely Hurts will decide to waive that clause and get away from Nick.

On the other hand, Siri isnt doing a very good job of just being a CEO head coach. But this offense can put enough points on the board with a real QB to the point where his decisions wont matter. Games will consistently be won in blowout fashion, with a real QB in this system with this talent around him.

No LBer in this world is going to fix the defense. We can’t stop the run because we constantly are losing the numbers game due to needing to play prevent defense for 4 quarters.

A competent green dot would change a lot IMO.

Pretty wild that anyone could watch the game last night and come away with the impression that they'd prefer Sirianni to stay instead of Hurts.

I keep hearing people excuse Hurts for playing sloppy and turning the ball over frequently because he still wins.

Outside of the fluke season, he's barely above .500 in his career.

Your CVON reading comprehension and jumping to wrong conclusions fails you repeatedly.

I did not choose one or the other.

Keeping Siri a bit longer may be a means to an end for the Hurts era. Its easier to fire a coach than it is to trade a huge QB contract with a no-trade clause. Keep siri till Hurts is fed up enough to WANT out. Then you can fire Siriani.

It should be pretty obvious Im talking about moving on from both.

Tbh i think it’s reflection on Atlanta is not that good offensively at the moment given where cousins is after his Achilles recovery. I’d argue the falcons made themselves one dimensional at the end of the first half due to wasting a timeout earlier in the half. I’d also add the falcons had 10 mins of time of possession in the second half. Had 4 possessions they scored on 3. eagles kind of did the same thing against Seattle last year.

The defense also has given up TDs of 33, 70 and 41 yards this year. I’d have to go look but I’m guessing that’s probably up there for most in the league through 2 games
