I can't watch anymore of these. It's all far worse than I remembered from watching in real-time. Things are fundamentally broken right now with no feasible fix in sight.

As is usually the case, we don't know because we're not in the defensive huddle. They all have assignments and you'd think "staying home" on a backside keeper would be the job of the shiftier EDGE lined up in a 9-tech not the DE from a 2-tech. I'm far from a Fangio fanboy but I'm leaning toward giving him the benefit of the doubt in this scenario and laying this at Milton's feet. That's the problem with these types of run fits though, single points of failure that lead to big gains on the ground against a team like the Falcons.

You are correct.   And now its time again for this one.

McLane:

#Eagles DT Jalen Carter didn’t start or play in the first defensive series against the Falcons because he was late for something team-related last week, NFL sources told The Inquirer.

Carter was on the field for the second series and, overall, played 46 of 61 snaps on defense — the most of the Eagles DTs. He finished the game with just one assisted tackle

Yea, fundamentally broken is an understatement. Same play but this time with Jalen on the backside and Milton walking out of the picture playside. Even if the DTs tighten this up a bit it's still a 5+ yd gain. Fangio was thoroughly outcoached by Zac Robinson. The only puzzling thing is why the Falcons decided to throw at all when these types of gains were there to be had almost all game long.

Judon doesn't look in the neutral zone to me. I think the Eagles would get called for a false start.

Per PFF, the Eagles had a missed tackle rate of 22 percent. Yiiiiikes.

He was late to get any pass rush too.

Hard to argue that he's wrong.

Today's film study should start with this question:

Don’t know if he was or not but looks like goedert was 100% upside about it. Sirianni might have been barking cause of goedert’s reaction to it.

To me the trade off of not overpaying a pass rusher who's 30 was not worth sacrificing a season like this for. Reddick would not solve everything, but my god man. The dude was your best defensive player for two years and the balls to get rid of that guy coming off a disastrous end to 2023. Their defense sucked and they got rid of the one guy who could wreck games. It was Fing stupid. This trade to me will forever be on par with cutting DeSean in terms of brazenness.

Great pass rushers don't grow on trees and they willingly gave one away to assume the risk of signing one(that was one of the riskier ones to sign, to boot). And now Howie is getting exactly what he deserves honestly. I hope he's ill every night from watching the film of this slop he put together. He deserves it.

I'm honestly not sure Reddick would even make that much of a difference. We all worried about losing Kelce, but Cox seems to be the much bigger loss.

Aside from playing Booker more, why didn't we run more 5 man fronts? We were that afraid of Cousins against our secondary?

Final vent/thought -- we're going to know everything we need to know about this team in the 1st quarter against New Orleans. If they come out flat and get pushed around again (which I expect), we'll have confirmation that they aren't worth the time.

I'm usually an optimist. What I saw on defense last night made me sick and killed all hope.

I don’t question heart.  Really tough to measure through a TV screen.  But they’ve all been insulted, embarrassed, and basically had their manhood challenged.

If they don’t explode out of the blocks in the first quarter…I won’t assume that they are gutless.  I’ll just assume that’s the best they can ever do.

Sheil with the interesting opinion that Eagles should have gone to it on 4th at the end.

I don’t know if they need to be hot out of the gate. But I looked at it more this way, if that team goes out there, they fight hard and it’s a close competitive game and they lose showed me they know how to battle through adversity and fight for their coach. I hate losing, but you’re playing tough against a good team on the road and didn’t just lay down it means they haven’t checked out on their coach.

If they go out there and they just get absolutely blasted it would feel much like what happened in the giants and Bucs games to finish the year. It would tell me a they don’t have good enough  personnel in place but also it kind of feels like they’ve given up. They should not look as bad as they did in week 18 against the Giants then the wildcard game against the Buccaneers. If that happens next week then they are also probably getting beatdown by Tampa Bay too. Which tells me that week 5 bye there’s a chance heads could roll.

I also have a question, we’ve heard in the past the Eagles have asked to have the bye later in the year. This year they managed to have it in week five. Did they ask that it was earlier in the year or do what they have in the past. Because maybe they asked it to be early in the year…

Should have ran it on 3rd down.  If they don't pick it up, then they should have at least been in position to tush push to win the game.

I like a lot of Shane's stuff. Showing how the alignment here basically makes stopping the run impossible. Multiple examples of this on his feed. Either the scheme blows or the players are screwing it up. Where is the 5 down lineman look on run downs??

And Fangio is supposed to be some defensive guru savant???

the defense is so bad  period
