This isn’t happening. I understand why a lot of fans are not happy after the way game 2 ended, and seeing some things that look bad on tape, but it’s still early in the season.

If the same issues are being discussed after week 4 then yes, question everything that’s going on with the organization. The Eagles are still a good team with a better chance than most, especially in the NFC, to have a great year.

The good news is that the NFC appears to be a dumpster fire, unless you believe in the Saints and the Bucs. The whole conference is wide open.

And the pass rush.

Gotta earn the right to rush the passer, as Nick said.  Getting gashed for 6.5 yards per carry is going to make it much harder; run defense is the main symptom in the poor pass rush.

Interesting Twitter thread about the defense. The stuff about slanting is similar to what I initially thought, but it's way worse. It's a issue and a personnel (at least at edge rusher) issue.

You know if the NFL was serious about player safety they'd stop the cut block where the player turns his back, because if Baun's leg is planted wrong when Lindstrom arrives he get's Nick Chubb'd, or alternatively if Baun's stride is different Lindstrom gets a knee to the back of the helmet, it's not a skill, it's turning yourself into an unguided missile and hoping the other guy values his knees enough to slow up.

Schwartz was a good DC who had absolute garbage in the secondary along with Malcolm Jenkins, and a usually a bad crop of LBs per Eagles history

This is just false and revisionist history. Jenkins and McLeod were good. Patrick Robinson played arguably his best year because got moved to the slot. Rasul Douglas is still an NFL starter. Mills and Darby weren't good. Mixed bag overall. Better safeties (largely because Gardner-Johnson can't tackle), worse corners.

LBs were one of our better corps, though obviously not the best. Nigel Bradham played good ball, Kendricks was Kendricks.

Schwartz actually has a history of poor secondary play within his schemes, and it's because he's probably one of the best around with front 7 scheming, but his back 4 scheming has always been pretty bad, dating back to Tenn.

His defense got exposed in the SB and he didn't really recover in Philly. I don't know how he did after he left, though.

1.  Run defense

2.  Pass rush

3.  Middling to below QB play

4.  Dubious FA signings (White, Huff, etc.)

If Barclay catches that ball.... these conversations carry a bit different tone.

Him not catching the ball- helped to expose the Defensive issues and put them squarely out in front.

The D Line has regressed massively the past 2 seasons....  Good on Howie for addressing the secondary- bad on Howie for his D ends...,  Sweat/HUff/Smith?  When an oline can double team your 2 DT's and use TE's one on one w DE's and the TE's WIN?

Yeah thats the problem.

Fangio is going to have to blitz to get pressure.

I guess that's where I am a little different -- I don't think Hargarve is more talented than Carter, or Joseph is more talented than Davis. We just aren't maximizing the talent we have. Now, that may be because the players are lazy, or it might be the fault of coaching. I still can't get over seeing Barnett look unplayable here and instantly becoming a decent rotation piece in Houston. How is Byard looking for far in Chicago? I'm guessing better than he did here. It seems like we get very little out of our talent on defense.

Talent vs. production.   Hard to prove talent without production.   Personally, I have very little hope for these guys right now.  I'm tired of hearing about their talent, I want to see it.   And when they are laying on the field, rather than upright, that's not so much on the way they are being used as it is the way they are playing.

We can think that Carter is more talented, or as talented as Hargrave... there's no actual evidence to support that though.  Same with Davis and Joseph.  Hargrave and Joseph have long track records.  Carter and Davis have UGA pedigree where all the players around them were also 5 star recruits.  Right now, I'm just not seeing it.

Barnett was fine here, but a bonehead and did bonehead things, so that the coaches lost patience with him.  He got cut and a smack of reality.  How many stupid penalties is he taking now?   That's not on the coaches, that's on the player.

Byard is an impossible situation to define the issue.  He was given up on in Tennessee for a reason and then stepped into a sinking ship.  How much did he really buy in to the team and put himself out there?  Not much from what I saw.  There was a play in either the final game or the second to last game where he was in position to make a tackle on a long pass and basically just stood there as the runner ran by.   There was effort, not utilization.  I think he, like many others down the stretch, checked out mentally, and it showed up on the field.

There's no excuse for the defensive collapse on that last drive, they had 1.40 and no time outs and they only needed a minute. I've never seen a defense try to end the game inside the 2 minute warning by not defending the sticks, the sideline or deep, what was Fangio calling?

On the D Line I always expected them to sign a vet DT like they signed Joseph and Suh in '22 and I still do, I just hope they don't try and drag Fletch out of retirement.

People would definitely repeat the 'a win is a win' line

We lost a lot of our great Dline in hopes the younger crowd could step up and they haven't

I'm curious if they kept DeSai and had him with consistency returning this year with the upgrades in the secondary would this be different? It was reported the players liked DeSai and didn't like how that went down.

That's a great question.   I think there was a loss of faith when Desai was demoted while Brian Johnson was left alone.   The offense was struggling just as much, if not more than the defense.  But Johnson's position was unaffected.

Also, the move from Desai to Patricia was a desperation move... the kind of move that gets people fired when it fails.   Ironically, the person/people responsible for that failure remain in place.   🤔

I didn’t watch any film because we lost due to Sirianni being a fraud .

Interesting look. We did get gashed going off tackle.

Pretty well in Cleveland, actually.

Bad news is - we’re a contributing part of the dumpster fire lol.

Looking at that tweet above, it's becoming clear we should play Smith and BG on 1st down. Or hell, WIlliams, Smith and BG along with Davis and Carter. It's not like Huff and Sweat are better pass rushers anyway, and they are massive liabilities against the run.

Yes WE are, its because Philly fans are the worst and the players feel bad about themselves.   WE need to be more positive to buoy their spirits and cheer them on as they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!!!

Ew lol. Nah it’s the product they’re putting on the field. They have the most offensive talent in the league and still lack identity. They play down to their opponent and our situational football has been abysmal for over a year now.

Doubtful.

Definitely not as much Sirianni vitriol.  But the poor play by the defense had already been seen.  It was only accentuated on Atlanta's final drive.

Unless remediated, the defensive problems are going to kill this season.

If Huff is a total bust, where would he be in the ranks of atrocious FA signings in the past?

So apparently one of the debate topics on the talking head ESPN show this morning was "Should Cover 2 defense be banned?” 🤣
