This is the game we hired Kellen Moore for

I wish this was broken out more. He has been very good against 5 man blitzes but Bowles does more zero blitz than most DC's which is still a question mark. If Smith and Brown are out I think we will likely see that the most we have all year. One of the pods I listened to the other day said Hurts is 16th in success rate against 6+ man blitzes.

They need to figure out some screens to Barkley up the middle if that’s the case.

We rarely see them do RB screens up the middle - but this would be the game to do them, imo.

There’s an old chalk talk of Moore talking play design in the preseason blog that covers similar ground. Most of us, myself included, tend to think of plays in isolation. Belichick famously talks about a game as being three quarters. After that you know everything you need to know. We beat the Saints entirely in the fourth quarter with what Moore learned in the first three. It would have been easier still if Sirianni had stayed at the hotel.

We also looked very good in the second half on offense against the Falcons.  Three possessions, three trips to the red zone.  Hurts throws a better ball to Smith at the end of the first one, we have a TD instead of a FG.  And we know how the third possession ended.

Moore is doing a really good job.  This may have already been posted on how we set up the Barley TD earlier in the game.

This is why I would like White active even if he isn't much of a help on special teams.  Say Dean goes down in the second quarter against Dallas and is out for the game.  I would be more comfortable with White coming in the games rather than Trotter and BVS.  Burks is also a possibility.

The answer is yes, I would feel more comfortable with any of Burks, Trotter AND BVS, depending on who the team prefers.

White strikes me as a Reagor type.  Drafted high.  Believes his past news clippings.  Thinks he has arrived and refuses to take the steps necessary to improve his game.  Look at, in comparison, Jordan Matthews.  Just doesn’t quite have enough so he reinvents himself.  Or Greg Ward.  Or Jordan Poyer.  Look at UDFAs like Blankenship or Q.  Or look at a player on the team right now, who sought out advice from his coach and developed.

One of my bosses (the one I had the longest) and his successor, we have me do interviews on people we were hiring for the higher positions that required a higher level technical positions.  My job in those interviews was to determine if the candidate, as my boss put it, had twenty years experience or twenty 1 years of experience. In other words, did they and would they devote the time and effort into growing their skill and knowledge every day.

So White finds himself inactive.  Huff may have believed he had arrived with his new contract.  As he attempts to grow, he finds his snaps diminished.  I suspect some of the Georgia players arrived with that "arrived” mindset and needed to be dissuaded of the notion.   Now some never take the next step and are soon gone from the league.  Others strive to be better every day, a philosophy not just of the Eagles but of most employers.

As coaches and bosses, they need to learn what motivates an individual as well as their limitations.  White being inactive is a motivator.   Now, I wonder if Nick and Fangio use the Tampa game as a carrot.  Tampa gave up on you.  What can you show to them AND US this week to convince us you are learning, improving and going to get better every day so that we make you active and show Tampa that it was their error in giving up on you?  White’s very career may hang in the balance as to how he responds.

Huff is being asked to make that step.  If I was Huff, I would ask to review film of where there was success in the past by him and where he has not succeeded.  I think Huff is going to continue to be tested as to how he can grow into the role. Meet with Washburn 1 on 1.  Meet with the pro scouts and analysts on what they saw and projected.  In essence, Huff is like Baun, learning a new position.  White can be Reagor or he could be like Maddox and Bradberry, who seeing their careers on the line, expanded their skill set (although arguably both are still a work in progress.).

Personally, I think the Fred Johnson story in the media was put forth by the team as a motivator.  We have seen similar about Mitchell and Baun.  I suspect the next one will be on Cooper, who seems to also embrace the challenge of learning multiple roles, including STs.  Or Becton, who seems to have embraced learning G.

One point that I believe should be broken out more is Kellen is the first longterm veteran OC we’ve had since… Morningweg? Shurmur had 2 years before he got here, the rest were new guys. Keep in mind all 3 games we’ve been driving the ball really well, we’re top 5 in yards gained; that only emoahsizes the red zone issues we’ve had. He has fixed a lot from last year, but there is still a lot more to fix.

I think it helps a ton Kellen has 2 games of footage against them from just last year. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the conclusion was "F it,” and Barkley has 31 carries Sunday.

Ross might play Sunday depending on brown and Devonta status

I thought that.  But I wonder if this isn’t a sign that the injuries to Smith and Brown are seen as short term (return after the bye at worse.)

The Braves seemed to have had the best 5th starter in MLB throughout the 90s. They racked up tons of regular season wins.  Didn't help them at all in the playoffs.  14 consecutive divisions titles and only one World Series victory.

didnt help them. However the playoff structure has also changed. now with a bye being added and how the Phillies play at home particularly compared to the road, having the bye clinched up and having solidified HFA would be helpful to them. It would also be nice to give Bryce some more time off to help his injury.

it doesn’t change the fact, it would be very beneficial to the Phillies if they had a competent 5th starter. they would already have home-field advantage wrapped up, they would have the bye wrapped up and guys like Bryce Harper, who are dealing with injuries could get more rest than what they gotten. I’d add in the playoffs it’s much better if your 12th pitcher on the roster weren’t potentially Walker, allard, Gilbert or Phillips especially if someone in the rotation gets hurt

I would also point out at the time of the trade deadline they had no clue what ranger Suarez was going to be when he came back from his injury. He still not where he was. And you knew your 5th starter spot was already a problem. Add in turnbull wasn’t expected back any time soon. So you had 2 injuries, Walker and a bunch of guys in the minors who got lit up so it was eventually going to be a problem.

Pretty bad.

That's basically what he's averaging this season

Completion percentage is up to 70%, but in 3 games he's averaging 257 yards, 1 TD, 1.3 INT, 2.3 sacks

Avoid Pro Bowler Wyatt Teller. May not get 100% of Myles Garrett.

Hurts has the 4th most passing yards in the NFL... Numbers are down across the board with QB's.  Here are yard leaders through week 3

#1 Dak
#2 Purdy
#3 Geno
#4 Hurts
#5 Stafford
#6 Minshew

Jalen continues to hunt big throws and hits them.

I would be terrified if I were a Colts fan.

Seahawks bring 42-year-old Jason Peters in for visit

A Seahawks team facing injury issues at their right tackle position brought in 42-year-old Jason Peters for a visit Tuesday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

Peters is a 19-year NFL vet who played eight games for the Seahawks last season with two starts, both at right tackle, in November games against the Rams and 49ers.

The Seahawks are down to their third-team right tackle in Stone Forsythe with Abraham Lucas and George Fant on injured lists.

Lucas has been on the physically unable to perform list and hasn’t played since last Dec. 31 because of a knee issue that required offseason surgery. He is eligible to come off the PUP list next week, but there is no indication he is close to returning. And even once he does he will need some time to get back into football shape.

Coach Mike Macdonald said Monday there is no ETA for a possible Lucas return.

"I don’t want to put a timeline on Abe right now,” he said. "We have kind of an in-house timeline with him and we’re working through it. But I’m not going to put a timeline on him right now.”

So have injuries been the same, worse, or better? It's been years now since majority of teams have decreased the amount of time starters play in preseason and the league removed 1 game and added the extra regular season week

I think the practice isn't so much to avoid regular season injuries.  It's to avoid injuries before the season begins.

Well that's just timing. Preseason happens a week before regular season

There is no question Mahomes hasn't been elite this year and last year during the regular season.  27-14 last year and 5-4 this year TD to Int ratio.

But look at what he does in the playoffs.  41-8 and a 68% comp percentage in 18 playoffs games.

Those middle screens with Swift last year won the KC game.

I can't wait to hear an update from Nick on the injuries. He'll probably say it's too early to rule out Covey even though he's on IR.

Maybe its time for Barkley to catch some screens

So Becton, Baun, and F. Johnson are eligible for extensions during the season.  All look to be valuable players to try to keep around.   All were also given second chances by this FO, so maybe a home town discount would be applicable.

Baun may be a no brainer.  He looks the part.  The stats support it.  He may end up in the Pro Bowl by the end of the season.  Sign the guy.

Becton is trickier.  He looks good at RG here.  He may want to get a OT deal elsewhere. I'd try to put together a deal where the base is a well-paid OG, but with incentives should he begin starting games at OT.  (I am starting to think that Lane's concussion may accelerate his desire to hang them up.)

Johnson may be dependent on Becton's path.  They have three options of various confidence at RT after Lane (Becton, Johnson, and Steen).  Johnson may follow Dillard and look to find a starting deal elsewhere.
