I'm sorry no existential crisis discussions on the blog.  I mean pretty soon you will just be espousing nihilism and then I will question what is the point of even posting here.  People will just say everything is just of dirt, villians always blink their eyes, and life is just to die.

I thought I'd leave that question out there by itself. Here we are, four games into the season and I don't know who we are. We have one of the best, if not the best, RB in the league and one of the best, if not the best OL, and we piss around. Did Barkley have a touch in the first quarter against the Saints? No. Two touches against the Bucs. Outgained  2 to 1.

No force of will.

And it appears the defensive effort against the Saints was an outlier. Nothing from our edge players. Two years ago we had 70 sacks. Now crickets.

We dictate nothing.

Who are we?

Watching press conferences. Goedert says the team has to find it's identity. Hurts agrees, says they are still trying to find their identity (and he said a lot of teams only 4 weeks into the season don't know their identity).

It’s really not. If the eagles go 1-2 in their next 3 games that’s actually worse over a 16 game stretch hen the 4-11-1 eagles. Furthermore, the coaching during the 2020 season wasn’t good either. I know because I was one of the ones posting videos showing how bad the coaching was that year along with how bad wentz was

Let me take it a step further the quarterback has 7 turnovers in 4 games. Means he’s on pace for 30 turnovers. Furthermore, he has five fumbles this season. That means he is on pace for 21 fumbles on the year. So you’re gonna tell me wentz had a turnover and fumbling problem but currently hurts doesn’t?  He is only behind Levis in total turnovers this year. That’s BS?

Let me go to the defense now, the defense wasn’t awful in 2020? Yeah, it was pretty bad. Only difference is defense could generate a pass rush and our corners are better now but their LBs stunk, they couldn’t stop the run (ranked 21 this year and ranked 22 in 2020) and they couldn’t generate turnovers (bottom 10 in 2020 and currently have 2 through 4 games in 2024)

you can call BS all you want, but the reality is they are 3-10 in their last 13 games with a far superior talent on their roster for many of these games than 2020. The real only difference on offense is that the last 13 games is the Eagles talent is so much more superior when they’re healthy that they can overcome bad turnovers/bad decisions by our Qb and poor coaching and score more consistently. Eagles offense had reagor, JJAW and Hightower playing significant snaps at WR and musical chairs at OL along with a bad Carson wentz and bad coaching.

I'm glad to see there's pushback from fans about Slay, not that it means anything.

That guy is so annoying. I see him from time to time on there and he gets super defensive about Philly teams. I see him going at people for very valid criticisms. Like if Hurts has a terrible game and had 4 turnovers and someone rips Hurts, he's one of those "So you're saying Hurts has to be perfect, then huh???"

Or if Tobias Harris scores 0 in a playoff game and someone rips him he'll be up in their mentions with "So, it's Tobias Harris' fault they're losing, right???"

I've asked myself this question every week for the past 20+ years (with the exception of one very magical year.)

and what he said was true, CJGJ does bring energy but he has to back up that talk with play. He laughs about it, but that's just who Slay is and doesn't make him any less of a leader to me. I've known leaders on teams I've been on that were just like this, razzing you while laughing so that no one takes it too seriously, but the message gets there. And as a CB, getting past the situation and being the same guy you always are is leadership, when you turtle and get overly serious like Hurts did last year, that everyone complained about, then that's way more destructive to me. Now if we're in week 16 and about to lose our shot at the playoffs, fine, but in week 4 at 2-2 going into the bye...

The thing is, Parsons and CJGJ have been having a back and forth twitter dispute and trading insults the last week or two. I don't care that Slay is doing a podcast or even talking to Parsons on a podcast. But when it delves into the territory of laughing at CJGJ that's when it gets to be problematic because who knows how CJGJ is going to take that. Maybe in the grand scheme of things it means absolutely nothing. But it isn't that hard for Slay to just not interject himself in that situation. Talk about the game or whatever you want, just don't single out a specific person who had a rough game. It's as easy as that.

It reminds me of a few years ago when Slay, again, started talking about a specific teammate to the media and throwing him under the bus. (I think it was Josiah Scott but don't remember exactly). Graham said he and the other leaders on D had to pull him aside and explain to him that they don't do that here.

It might and probably isn't THAT big of a deal. But at minimum it's just poor optics.

See, we took that differently, I took it from that clip as him laughing at CJGJs antics of ish talking, like laughing at BGs antics, not laughing at his poor play.

All i know is these are the turnover/fumble numbers for hurts last 13 games:

11 ints and 11 fumbles (14 passing tds)

Wentz last 12:

15 ints and 10 fumbles (16 passing tds)

Let me just say neither are good.

Wentz in 2020 was on pace for 20 ints and 13 fumbles

currently hurts for 2024 is on pace for 17 ints and 21 fumbles

this isn’t OMG Jalen hurts is useless and he sucks. No this is he needs to be better cause he’s going down a road we saw at the end of Carson wentz’s tenure here.

I understand the criticism of Hurts and the play calling but the Eagles are not winning the line of scrimmage.  The players need to execute and win their battles.  As the saying goes, it isn't about the X's and the O's but the Larry's and the Joe's.  That being said, the coaches need to put them in the best position to make plays.

Fred Johnson had a good game in relief of Lane but did not play well in Tampa.  Pressure was coming quick from the edge.  Becton also allowed some inside pressure on a couple of plays.  I still think the strength of this OL is in the run game using their size and power to beat the opposing team into submission.  With Lane Jonson back, they should be better in pass pro but they should dedicate to the run.

The D line is a whole different deal.  They don't have a game changer at DE to wreck the game plan of the opposition.  Carter has that ability at DT but will be frequently doubled.  If Fangio would try to take away the short passes, obviously that would give them more time to get to the QB.  He also needs to mix in the blitz.  Baun is an effective blitzer.  Dean hasn't gotten done in any way.  Give White or Trotter Jr a chance there.

I think the O-line has played well this season given 2 new starters. The bigger issue is the ineffectiveness of the d-line.  Some of it is talent.  Huff and Sweat are the worst starting edge rushing I can remember.  Maybe you could argue that in '97 the Mamula/Greg Jefferson combo was worse.  I think Mamula still played better as a run defender than Huff.  The interior d-line issue may be more usage than talent.  It seems like they like to run a lot of slants in 4 man fronts which make them really susceptible to the run.  The lack of pressure may also be tied to the lack of cohesive coverage on the back end.  They are getting beat, again, by QBs throwing the ball quickly.

But what is Parsons laughing about? He can say "I'm Mr Positive and don't try to stir things up" but that's what he's doing with the "CJ struck again." So we have a guy who acknowledged CJGJ took his prior comments personally, laughing at him now for what happened on Sunday with Slay laughing along at whatever it is he's laughing about. It just looks bad.

By my count, it's been more than a full calendar year since we've seen a "big play" from Slay.  The guy needs to look himself in the mirror and ask himself if he cares.

A team that started smelling themselves very quickly.

It's time.

Almost like paying two corners both going to be 30 or older in one offseason was a mistake.

Might be end of the road for Maddox

The best magic bullet to cure Hurts' fumbling problem is for Hurts to get the ball out faster.  He has the mobility to buy time and occasionally break off a good run, but he's not a dynamic player with the ball in his hands the way Lamar Jackson is; he's probably not even as exciting as Josh Allen is.  Jayden Daniels is dynamic carrying the football -- I wouldn't be surprised to see him score a 60+-yard TD run on the Eagles defense the way they're playing.  Mitchell is the only player in the secondary fast enough to chase him down if he gets loose.

I went back and watched part of the Bucs game again.  The run defense still isn't nearly good enough; both Bucs RBs averaged 4.9 yards per carry.  That's helping to kill the pass rush.  Teams just aren't in 2nd and long or 3rd and long nearly enough.  The tackling was atrocious, especially from the secondary.  Slay, CJGJ and Maddox are all awful at tackling.  Mitchell misses occasionally but is much better than the others.  Blankenship is the best tackler of the group.
