I don’t think I ever seen this mentioned but what is up with Reed Blankenship and his allergies to tackling QB’s at the goal line? Mayfield dragged him into the endzone which could be just excused away with being sick but Purdy also did the same thing last year.

Yes, I’m crossing into whining. Just don’t understand what the hesitation is.

IIRC he waited for Mayfield at the goal line instead of closing and trying to get him on the ground.  Too tentative

Defensively... Howie has really struggled to draft well.  Nearly all of his 'hits' have been offensive.   Granted, he's put more emphasis there, but that just makes it all the more important to hit on the defense when he does go that way.   Good news is that the early returns on Mitchell are promising.  He's still got a long way to go though, but he's not embarrassing himself out there at all.  Would be nice if he managed to pick off one of these passes that he's close to.

Considering his history drafting defense, there is hope with the picks of: Carter, Mitchell, DeJean (TBD but everyone liked the pick and currently want him to start). Then there are some value mid round picks that are decent like Ringo, Sydney Brown, Ojomo a 7th rounder, Milton Williams, Patrick Johnson a 7th rounder.

So there's improvement. If he can add another solid defensive player in the next draft to add to the above, the core is much improved.

To be fair, two long-time veterans that have known each other and played against each other many times can often have a mutual respect. These guys are human beings.

However, I do love that Q has "the juice" as he said. I hope he keeps that edge to him. I look forward to him being a solid corner for us for a long time.

I like Q a lot.  This is the attitude you need to be a great CB.  AND HE BACKS IT UP.

And you don't go low at the GL.  Because obviously the runner can poke the ball across or fall across yada yada. The GL is the one place it is OK to hit waist to chest.

His specialty is doing largely nothing aside from being good at crashing in and diving forward to intercept errant throws.

I kid, I kid.

I keep hearing about Ringo.  I just haven't actually seen it on the field yet.  Sydney Brown is another one... he's a heat seeking missile, but he seems to play too out of control.  He needs to reign it in a bit to be effective.

Those rolling rings never push back.

(Actually a joke because I think those rings serve a purpose)

I've seen a lot of people with high expectations for Brown.  I'm not one of them.

Trouble with the rings is, when you are tackling them... you aren't breaking down.   What's their drill to break down and tackle a human, who is trying to avoid being tackled?

I would say if that is the case, they're doing it incorrectly.

I think the purpose of the moving target is to prevent that very thing-- lunging and not driving through the ball carrier.

Maybe they need those tackling wheels to be like 100 lbs rather than just 20.

Ringo we'll find out in 2025 when Slay leaves.
Brown we should find out more this year. I think he gets on the field. CJGJ has already been digned a bit and struggles to stay healthy.

Those rings are silly IMO. You're right, you don't have to break down to tackle them. Every drill they show with the donuts, they are running and diving. That isn't a great way to teach tackling techniques. There's no resistance or weight to them either. This also seems to be the Eagles primary way of teaching tackling. The "safe" way of practicing.

I mean, watch this clip. Maddox is doing exactly what they do during the ring tackle drill. What do the Eagles expect their guys to do when it's what they practice. Good thing Sirianni is going and watching tape on all kinds of tackles.

Also, I've been bullish on Carter because my expectations for him are to be the best. It's frustrating to see the potential but not the results every game. On that same piss poor Maddox tackle attempt, the only DL to do something on this play is Carter. He bull rushed his guy nearly 5 yards deep. Guy is on roller skates. Credit to TB for game planning the quick passes. Don't ask me what Sweat is doing on the bottom of the screen, Huff gets engulfed by the TE (big surprise) and Davis gets stonewalled.

Most definitely.

Seems so.

Yup.

Looks like head down and lunging... exactly what we saw Maddox do on that attempt.

That pass was immediately out.  Not much the DL could do.  Maddox needs to not be useless and it's a 1 yard gain.

Davis dealt with the initial double, Carter wins immediately.  Even Huff did alright.

Speaking of useless, there's Sweat just doing his own thing, aiming for 12 yards behind the QB, running in sand and getting to that useless spot 5 minutes late.

Here's a clip, it won't embed, but they call that tackle the Gator Roll. This particular video is the jackass coach doing it.

Compare that to 11 years ago.

Even in this drill against bags, it appears they are teaching and coaching to explode through the "player"

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to take away from that. I couldn't care less what is said on the field. CJGJ does all kinds of talking and has allowed 4 TDs in 4 games , allowing a 145 QB rating when targeted and has over a 16% missed tackle percentage. I'll take play over talk any day.

The need to take the red jersey off of the scout team QB.

Or there's this. Welcome to the Eagles 10 y/o Avonte Maddox.
