Not sure when or why eagles brass decided to move on from a D scheme they had so much success with under Reid, and not just move on but went from an aggressive D to basically playing prevent until the O gets inside the 20 where they still play prevent but its a compressed Prevent D due to the short field.

If I had a guess its a direction they took under advisement from the ANALytics department...😒

Chip Kelly changed the defense to a 3-4 approach under Billy Davis. They brought in Schwartz with Pederson.  Schwartz switched back to a 4 down front but was not much of a blitzer.  He tended to just bring pressure with 4 down using the wide-9 look.  Gannon came in with the 2 deep safety Fangio approach.  Gannon has said that the Eagles pushed some of the scheme decisions on him based on analytics.

😕.  Unfortunate for you, but trust me, it happened... and the defense that year was glorious.  Even more glorious than the other defenses that also managed to be the top defense against the run, pass and overall yards... because they had literally no offense to work with for about half of the season.

Was that the year Randall went down in week 1?

I'm probably in the minority here, but I have more faith in the defense than the offense getting it together.

That depends on how you quantify getting it together.  I think the roster is built with the design to be a top 5 offense and a top 15 defense.  I could go along with the defense can get closer to 15 than the offense can get to 5.

Turnovers are a huge part of what's going on here.  The Eagles have been pretty poor in the giveaway/takeaway ratios over the past 10 years -- with the exception of 2016, 2017 and 2022.  The last two of those, the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.  The Fangio defense is designed to stop big plays, make the opposing offense matriculate down the field, and to get stops in the red zone.  If you can prevent TDs and force a few turnovers, the defensive scheme can be effective.

The Eagles defense has been lacking playmakers for quite a few years now.  Big Play Slay makes as many big plays as actual Sasquatch sightings, and we're seeing that if CJGJ isn't getting picks then he's a liability at safety.  The Eagles drafted Mitchell and DeJean, who were both good at getting turnovers in college -- hopefully that can translate to the NFL.  The defense needs some serious coaching at forcing fumbles, though.  More effort and getting numerous tacklers to the ball carrier would be a good first step.

Barnett 2.0

Was thinking more LJ Fort but yeah.

I can see him going somewhere and playing good for 4-5 games then being crappy again.

I know it could be much worse, but I really hate the FO and coaching staff.

Just ready to clean house. Howies a cap wizard, but he likes to stick his nose into everything and sucks at drafting outside of elite talent that falls to him. Not gonna start on Sirianni. Fangio and his defense suck, too.

Is it a cap wizard when all you're doing is getting the contracts done before the market hits?

Man, the Commies last 7 games are brutal. 2 against us, 2 against the Cowfrauds, at Saints, home against Atlanta and one easy game against the Titans before their week 14 bye. They could start 7-3 or 8-2 and collapse down the stretch/

McDermott was garbage when he took over the Eagles defense.  It was top 10 the last two years under Johnson, then McDermott quickly had them 19th and 21st in his two years.  I was shocked when he got the Bills head coaching job — he’s done well, but definitely isn’t good enough to get them to the top.

Would want no part of him back in Philly

I mean they let Dawkins go the first year he took over.  Losing Dawkins impacted the quality of that defense.  He also struggled getting players to buy into his approach because of his age.  He got the head coaching job because of his success in Carolina where he did have 2 top 10 defenses.

Not saying he isn’t, you just don’t do business like that. Fire him on an off day, etc..

Much better, at least for memes.

I believe a lot of the issues on defense are part of the learning process and players are not lining up correctly and are out of position. These are issues I feel can be corrected fairly quickly through simplifying or changing the coaching/teaching approach. They are pretty young and Fangio had hinted before that some of the issues may be due to their overall inexperience.

As far as the offense goes, as long as Sirianni is here he will continue to meddle in the offense and try to put his stamp on it. It clearly doesn't work and we haven't seen a competent offense since Steichen left.

Basically, I think Fangio is a better coach and can fix his side where Sirianni will get more involved, as his job is on the line, and muck everything up even more.

AJ, Smitty and Lane will help improve the offense just by their talent, but that will only go so far if the coaching and Hurts performance do not improve. So far this is all just a continuation of last year and they did not drastically change.

If this year is bad im gonna hope that 1. Sirianni is fired and 2 . Fangio goes with him. I dont have someone id want as a HC but i would take Saleh as the DC in a heartbeat

I'm with you because the offense is held back by the QB and that can't change this year.

The defense probably won't improve but conceivably guys can get better in the scheme,  and personnel changes can be made like DeJean now starting for Maddox. Maybe like playing Booker more. More pass rush opportunities for Baun... etc.

Yes, that is a big part of it.

I just don't see how they get together the pass rush that has been atrocious.

Jeremy Fowler said the team discussed several potential defensive changes during the bye week that they could make.

He also hinted that Sirianni could possibly be in trouble if they lose to the Browns.

Gannon played a ton of 5 man front single high stuff

And while Schwartz didnt blitz he was almost always in a wide 9 stop the run on the way to the qb.

I didnt mind Chip switching to a 34 but its a tough transition personnel wise.

I think I remember Gannon talking about the analytics

I think analytics have their place but basing ones whole offense and defensive scheme off analytics seems foolish.

Yup.   QBs were: Jim McMahon, Pat Ryan, Jeff Kemp, Brad Goebel and eventually they signed Ken O'Brien as a backup.   I'm not sure if I missed one or not.   But that's a brutal group of QBs.  McMahon got most of their wins... and Kemp got a couple down the stretch.  Just a brutal year offensively.   Rich Kotite's first year as HC.

Best hire Braman ever made was adding Bud Carson to be the DC that year.  In fact, it might have been the only really truly good hire he made.

Nah.  I think he's washed, which is why he came here on a 1 year prove it deal, but apparently had no interest in actually proving it.

I don't know what to root for this weekend.

Yup. That 91 team with zero running game went through 5 qbs finished 10-6 missed the playoffs in the toughest division in football at the time with the giants winning the bowl in 90 skins in 91 and cowboys in 92-93.

That D was stacked and carried that pathetic offense to 10 wins.

That was our year.

If Randall stays healthy all year, we win the superbowl that year and you can't convince me otherwise.

One of my least favorite games all-time was the loss that season to the Bucs when Kotite thought running the ball repeatedly with Heath Sherman when the Bucs had 22 men on the LOS was a good strategy.

One of my favorite moments from that season was the goal line stand against Joe Bugel's Cardinals and the D stopped them 7 straight times from the 1 yard line.  Greatest goal line stand ever.

The defensive changes were DeJean starting in the slot and Devin White getting cut.
