Its almost like they lost a franchise goaltender because of a criminal investigation and traded people away last year for picks because they, you know, are rebuilding. Their backup goalie played on a bigger rink and against AHL level competition. They have no defense because they haven’t gotten any pieces during their rebuild. 
 

It’s the youngest team in hockey. Everybody expected them to regress, except people who post here, apparently. It’s a rebuild, man. They’re gonna suck for awhile. We all got too used to the aggressive rebuilds that the last few GMs did. That didn’t get us anywhere either. 
 

Nobody thought this team was going to be or should be competitive. Just enjoy the little good things that happen.

this team is just not built to win yet, they need get bigger, they are not going to win a cup with a smallish group of dman and forwards, they are getting manhandled by bigger teams for some reason fans are refusing to accept that you need bigger players, it's not going to work. the biggest issue is that hextall destroyed that identity by getting rid of the big forwards and replacing them with smallish players and that backfired.

Hextall destroyed a lot, but other than being terrible at drafting, trades, contracts, and hiring head coaches he was quite a guy.

It’s too early to say one way or another with Ersson. 

Time for Tortorella to go.  It’s one thing to have goaltenders not playing well enough, but a lot of these young guys are regressing under his coaching:

Tippett — 3 goals in 15 games

Farabee — 3 goals in 15 games

Frost — 1 goal in 15 games

Brink — 2 goals in 12 games

Foerster — 1 goal in 14 games 

Cates — 0 goals in 11 games

 

A lot of these guys are supposed to form the nucleus of the team going forward.  If Tortorella can’t coach offense, can’t coach defense, can’t coach goaltending, is too abrasive to form relationships ….. what’s the point in him being around at 65+ years old?

There is no rebuilding in the current NHL; expansion teams go to the Cup finals in their first year of existence.  Talent is secondary to a system based approach.

Oh, this one team did it one time after an expansion draft and didn't even win the cup, and then used all the draft picks they accumulated during the expansion draft to build a whole new team that did win the cup down the road?

And yet, if they win tonight they are at .500 in the crazy world of NHL records.  Given how they started, they are trending in the right direction.

That win total is pretty much all that counts.  Most years it takes 93 or 94 points in 82 games for a playoff spot, because the tie just means you took longer to lose and the opponent still got an extra point.

It doesn’t matter what stage an organization is in; when your better players are drastically underperforming it means a change is necessary.

The core you cite are a bunch of guys that Hextall flubbed on. Any other team and they wouldn’t be "the core”. Right now our core is Michkov. And that’s it. We have a bunch of picks this draft. It’s a rebuilding team. There’s going to be ups and downs. Give it a few years.

I don't think so.  They were 36-26-9 last season with 11 games to go; even going 5-5-1 in those games would have gotten them to 92 points -- Washington made the playoffs with 91.

Michkov is their future more than he is their present core.  Their core is Konecny, Tippett, Foerster, Farabee along with Michkov at forward -- and Sanheim, York, Drysdale on defense.  Ersson and one of Fedotov/Kolosov in net.  Ersson is still 25 and Kolosov 23.  Even Fedotov is 28.

How good a core that is would be up for debate, but they were a playoff bubble team last season with a decent finish.  They're not bottom of the league rebuilding as you're suggesting.

That core sucks outside of Michkov and Konecny. Everyone else is more or less replacement level.

They’re starting to come around a bit.  Near the bubble for a wildcard spot again, but the top 3 teams in the division are far ahead.

Spoke too soon; they're letting goals in by the bushel again.  Only PIT and SJ are worse in their own end.  Ersson has been dreadful since returning.  Surely this has to be Tortorella's last year in Philly.

They are doing better than I thought they would. That probably means nothing though. 😁

Yeesh, when they lose, they really lose. Give up a plethora of goals.

I was looking forward to watching the flyers this season but it’s the same issues as always, I’m glad they are blacked out here on regular TV and I didn’t spend the money to get Hulu just to follow them.
