Such a great burn given the result of the game tonight. I’m old enough to have lived through a lot of playoff bitterness against MTL — from the 1976 Cup Finals where the Flyers lost to the Habs, and everyone conveniently forgets the first three games were all one-goal losses without Bernie Parent in net, to the BS cheap shot Chicken Chelios put on Brian Propp to take him out of the playoffs, to the childish crap Corson and Claude Lemieux instigated to set up the pregame brawl in 1987. Any series win over these jerks is fantastic
August 22, 20205 yr Excited for the win but they need to be consistently better if they’re going to beat the Islanders. Can’t keep relying on Hart to save their asses. Nice to finally have a goalie that can steal a game or two, but he needs much more goal support against a better team.
August 22, 20205 yr Answers to the questions I posted yesterday: Will Hart shake it off and bounce back? Yes. I am sure he would appreciate some of his defensemen doing a better job clearing people, but he was solid. Will any one of Konecny, Giroux, Hayes, or Couturier actually produce? Hayes Yes; Others still MIA. I am convinced Giroux took that penalty just so he could get his name announced over the PA. Can Ghost (I assume he replaces Niskanen) provide an offensive spark and cut down on the turnovers (every time he has the puck in the defensive end I get nervous)? Ghost actually played really well. A few turnovers, but nothing major. Skated well. Maybe he needs to be benched every few games to refocus him? Does he stay in the lineup with Niskanen back? He might for now as he adds an offensive dimension on the back end - assuming he can stay responsible defensively. Will the Habs come out head-hunting? Not really - but they kicked the Flyers tail in the 2nd. Can the young guys play loose and fast or will they tighten up? There is still some frantic play - especially in their own end - but they seemed to be ok. First 2 periods were a little scary but the 3rd was a thing of beauty (if you like defensive hockey and your team is leading). Will the Flyers stop the blind passing garbage that ends up going right to Habs players? Still had a few, but they cut those down as well. Those seams are not going to magically open up vs. NYI, as NY is sound defensively, so need to keep the no-look garbage to a minimum. Is this the game Carey Price steals? Not last night but he was really good all series. Of the 11 goals in the series, I think they only beat Price with 4 non-pinball deflection goals. 1 in game 1 (Farabee), 1 in game 4 (Raffl), 2 in game 5 (Scoreachek, Farabee) - Everything else was off bodies, sticks, and defensemen. Will Michel Therrien screw up a PP that finally started getting some traction? Mission accomplished. PP is brutal to watch. Final thoughts - I look forward to hating the Habs in the years to come. I would have loved Shea Weber on the Flyers but I can't stand him right now and his stupid scraggly beard. Next Series: Islanders will give the Flyers fits. They are not as fast as Montreal but they are well coached, deep, and play good defense. They look really good.
August 22, 20205 yr The islanders are way better offensively than Montreal and while they might be sound defensively they don't have a carey price or a Shea weber. Hopefully that helps a little bit, but I think the islanders as a whole have the edge after watching this series. They might win in 5 if the flyers don't get their ish together

We’re not going to see a series win if we fall back into 1 or 2 goal offensive games like we saw early in the MTL series.

Milbury shouldn't be on the broadcast team because he's an idiot -- but he didn't say anything insulting nor insensitive. It's obvious that he's speaking about young, single guys as players -- and it's common knowledge that there are hockey "groupies" that are normally present in the vast majority of NHL cities. I had friends who played in the AHL, and they were present there, too -- very likely still are.
August 22, 20205 yr As far as the matchup with the Islanders, they're a team that would have been right on the playoff bubble under a normal scenario, fighting with CAR and CLB for the last playoff spot. They're offensively challenged just like MTL and actually scored even fewer goals, but they are better as a team defensively. Where they pose a challenge is in physicality; they have much more sandpaper than MTL did. The Habs were mostly smaller rats who were agitators, where the Isles have guys like Matt Martin and Clutterbuck who always play physical. Varlamov is very good, but not quite at Carey Price's level. Flyers special teams were better during the season, so hopefully they can rejuvenate it.

The Gallagher stuff was not enough to move the needle. But I think this team has always come together a bit more when there's a player or 2 on the opposing side who try and set a physical tone. Couple big hits or runs taken at guys like Giroux, and you usually see players like Konecny or Raffle get mad and raise their games just a bit more. Agreed on what you said re: Milbury as well.

Literally Stephen a smith on ESPN said players should be allowed one female Access to the bubble for sexual purposes and conjugal visits cause it’s necessary for the players being in the bubble that long and helps to relieve the stress of living in the bubble. So that imo was acceptable then this is in the same boat yet people found a way to say it was offensive but smith’s comments weren’t.

I agree that an announcer is accountable for what he says into a mic whether he knows he's on air or not. I also think, however, if he's not back on the job in 2021 that would be a damn shame. Too many people in the current generation 'want to be offended'. If you are a homosexual male and you were offended or insulted by what he said, you have that right. He apologized and was removed from the broadcast. If you want to accept his apology or not, that is your right. Where I differ from most others these days is -- if you are not a homosexual male, his comment does not and should not concern you -- so kindly shut up. He will lose at least 3 months pay from MLB and a full season of pay from the NFL -- those consequences are plenty, if not excessive. He's apologized and been punished, so let it go. Sorry -- that's my rant for the day.
