EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

The most likely injury will be vs Detroit where Kirby Joseph hunts knees, and we probably cant avoid playing them. It will also be before the super bowl. Maybe we should rest him in that game too then.

Winning the Giants game has absolutely no impact on our ability to win the Super Bowl. Winning a playoff game is simply required by the rules of the sport in order to win the Super Bowl.

Stupid comment.

Its kind of impossible to talk about this record being broken and still try to call the game meaningless. On the other hand you are scared of injury before the super bowl, but you know Kirby Joseph lurks in the future, before the super bowl.

It just doesnt add up logically.  Combined with the continuous use of the false dilemma falacy people keep using by saying they can go for the rushing record OR the super bowl, it just continues to prove that the foundation for the side of the argument you are on is built on flawed logic.

The Lions can lose in the divisional round and we never see them. It isn't a guarantee they win the super bowl if they rest the starters, but it isn't a guarantee he breaks the record in a half either. The odds of us winning the super bowl drastically go down if saquon or anyone on the line gets hurt. Why would you throw it away before the playoffs even start?

I truly don't understand anyone's logic here. I bet nobody using this "playing scared" argument has had an issue resting starters in the last week before. Are you also avid opponents of the first round bye? Why play for the first seed, isn't that playing scared? Don't wanna play anyone in the first round? Who needs rest?

Barkley has already surpassed Dickerson's total scrimmage yards by 39 yards in the same amount of games. It isn't a record, but it isn't any less of an accomplishment. How many rings do Eric and OJ have combined?

Also, Simpson had 2003 yards rushing in 1973 and his total the following year was 1251. Dickerson broke the record with 2105 in 1984 and followed that up with 1284 the next season. CJ2k had 2006 yards, then 1364. Henry had 2027, then 937. Davis had 2008 yards, then 211. Sanders had 2053, then 1491. Peterson had 2097, then 1266. Lewis had 2066, then 1006.

This argument seems to have two scenarios:

1. Barkley plays, breaks the record, but someone gets hurt.

2. Barkley rests and we lose in the playoffs regardless.

Nobody seems to consider that he could play and still not get the record. We'd clearly be tipping our hand at the LOS, making it easy for the giants to go all in against Barkley. They have absolutely nothing to lose by selling out against the run the entire game.

The decision has been made and we may still lose in the playoffs. But a week of rest before the wildcard game will absolutely benefit this team physically. That's why teams strive for the #1 seed.

How many of you had Eric Dickerson?  How many even had OJ?

Im not old enough to have them, which shows you how rare this opportunity is.

There is more to the bye than just the rest.   The other part is that that team doesn't need to win to advance to the next round.   It's a free pass AND rest.

And frankly, the free pass is the more important factor.  No team has EVER lost during a bye week.  Plenty of teams have lost after a bye.

People arguing for him to play are also acting like saquon didn't already achieve a major accomplishment simply by rushing for 2,000 yards.

Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, Marshall Faulk.

To be fair, I do have both Dickerson and Simpson in the top 10.

I was responding to this part

That was unclear to me, so ignore my comment.

Its pretty forgettable for people outside of Philadelphia. People dont usually look up who are the 2000 yard rushers in history and even so his name is down at 8th on the list. Most people wont care so much to look that far down the list.

People look up all time leading rushers. Thats not a list of 9. The leading rusher is 1 name standing above all others in history. Thats the real, historic accomplishment. Even to move his name up on the list of all time leading rushers from 8th, to 5th would have taken about 1 more drive in the last game. Moving his name up to a more prominent area on that list is something he deserved, even if they wouldnt let him get to #1. Again, a lot of people arent going to go down to #8. It feels fairly insignificant.

How many 8th bests in anything can you rattle off from your head? Nobody cares.

The only immortality in the NFL is a Super Bowl.

A rushing record can and will be broken.

Technically, Pro Football Hall of Fame qualifies too.   Lots of guys are in there that never won a Super Bowl... or any championship for that matter.

If you were given the opportunity to take one RB from that list of 10 which one would it be?

For me it would be Earl Campbell.

However, my GOAT isn’t on that list … Jim Brown.

Earl did not have a great set of hands.  But he was pure joy to watch running the ball.  He was a human bowling ball because the strength in his 34” thighs, great center of gravity and speed.  But he really wasn’t the receiving threat that Barkley was. I think Barkley said it best when asked about his five greatest running backs.  He referenced a back who I suggested earlier this season as a great comparative for him.

Sanders (Barry): "The most talented, gifted runner with the ball in his hand.”

Faulk: "Most versatile running back of all time.”

Payton: "Best all-around running back of all time.”

Smith (Emmitt): "Most successful running back of all time.”

Peterson: "The biggest freak of all time.”

Ok, so why is no one bishing about him being taken out last game? Or why is no one complaining he decided to sit the rest of the game back when he said "let the young guys eat"? He would've had the record already had he played those entire games. The odds of someone getting injured in this game are 100% higher than if they don't play.

Interesting pro bowl list.  Mitchell was robbed.

Goff, Daniels, Darnold over Hurts.

No AJ

Mitchell not in the pro bowl? Seriously?

6 pro bowlers for Eagles.  No Mailata or Quinyon.

I don’t think Barkley has a great set of hands himself.  Barkley is along AP’s line of freakiness but has (not quite) moves and elusiveness like Sanders.

To nitpick, not sure I understand the difference between versatility and all around.  Lot of overlap there.  I’d say Faulk is the best receiving RB of all time and the most dangerous running routes.

I complained about him being taken out last game. It was the wrong thing to do.

Nobody was thinking about this record back in that 1st Giants game. It was a long way away and no one was thinking it was a goal that could realistically be accomplished. That day was about his personal career high, and the franchise career high (which the team on the sidelines didnt seem to realize was in play).

They thought about super bowls from day 1. But nobody thinks they are going to break the single season rushing record. Again, demonstrating the rarity of the opportunity as compared to a yearly super bowl winner that someone is guaranteed to get.

Of course he wanted to go for it. Don’t be stupid. It’s a personal achievement. All the same, he acknowledged that there was good reason to rest him and the other guys. Good for the team.

Don’t pretend he didn’t acknowledge that.

And he said in the same interview that he told his family, he didn’t make the move for a rushing record, he made it to hang a banner.  About as honest and selfless statement a man can make.  True to his own goal.

too bad for AJ being held back by his non-pro bowl QB.

NFL Films Thank You Jason Kelce

Cool that Cam Jurgens made it in his 1st year starting at Center.

Feel bad for Mailata. Thats crazy.
