The thing that sucks about the Mamula pick is that the Eagles fell for the workout hype and in doing so, passed up on 3 HOF players in Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks and Ty Law. Sapp had his "issues" but he's the guy they should have taken. I LOVED Derrick Brooks at FSU.

He was also picked between two incredibly successful pros in DE Kevin Carter (100+ sacks) and Joey Galloway (nearly 11,0000 yards 77 TDs).

Mamula was over drafted and then had his career cut short playing on the terrible Vet surface. 31 sacks in 77 games isn't bad at all when you look at it. Any other name besides Mike Mamula and I think we'd be happy with that.

It isn't the name, its the cost as well.   They traded away 12, 43 and 63 to land him.   They got back 7 and 72.  That's a steep price to pay for a guy who gives you that production, and frankly, was a liability as a run defender... in an era where that was still a massive focal point of most offenses.   During that era you still had Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Jerome Bettis, Terrell Davis, and Eddie George, to name a few.  Teams were still very much centered on the running game, and he wasn't very good at stopping the run.

Why is that a knock on the GM?  Was it not the GM that went out and made the move to bring CMC to SF?   Lynch saw that he could be had, and envisioned what he could do in that offense?  Why wouldn't the GM get credit for that move?  It was obliviously a transformative move for the franchise.   That would be like using the decision to sign Barkley to be a strike against Howie.  It makes no sense.

I agree that CMC should be a positive for Lynch. It was a very Barkley type move and I think Howie deserves a lot of credit for Saquon. Both players had bad injury histories and weren’t sure things. Both GMs would have been criticized if it didn’t work out.

Defense looked pretty good out there. I'm not sure what the problem is.

Edge rush is our weakest link particularly now with BG out.  Huff was supposed to be the guy this year to add in with Sweat and an emerging Smith and we could sure use another fastball at edge for the playoffs.  Alas, Huff isn't going to add anything.

Can't believe the season is over. NFL season always flies by way too quickly.

Argh… Vic knew Van Ginkel and he wound up costing half as much. Not 100% 20/20 hindsight.

I am not sure Fangio would have used Van Ginkel the way Flores is using him now.

He could’ve used him like he did in MIA, and I’d settle for half the production.

Based on how Brian Flores describes him, it sounds very similar to what Vic demands from Nolan.

"It's very rare, I would say,” defensive coordinator Brian Flores said. "To have a guy who you feel comfortable at that size… most outside backers, from a height-weight standpoint aren't comfortable in space with receivers so it's very rare to have a guy who can play in space and then get on the line of scrimmage, set edges, play off the ball, play on the ball, blitz drop, it's rare. That was part of the kind of evaluation and the vision for him. He's to play these multiple roles, but I think he's even exceeded what my vision was going to be for him and he's done a phenomenal job.”

Keys to me are limiting the Packers rush game and not losing the turnover battle.  Jacobs worries me and the Packers had 163yds rushing in Brazil.  The D is different now and I feel good about keeping them to around 100yds which should be good enough.

Davis playing most of the Giants game was interesting. He’s a key cog to the run game and the fact they were willing to risk his health in a meaningless game was interesting. Maybe it’s a conditioning thing to keep him in game shape, but who knows.

He wanted to play but no other reason given

"That's another game I get to play,” Davis said after the Eagles got to 14-3 with a 20-13 win over the Giants. " I love this game, man. I've played football since I was a kid, so any game that I get to play I'm very fortunate, very excited. Treat every game the same, whether we’re playing the Giants, whether we play in the Super Bowl.

I don't think he's had Smith drop in coverage as much as Van Ginkel does.  Van Ginkel is playing more of a true OLB as opposed to an edge player.  I also think Flores uses Van Ginkel as a joker type pass rusher and as a blitzer.  We don't see that from Fangio.  I am not saying he wouldn't have been better than Huff but Reddick would have been better than Huff too.  Van Ginkel and Reddick are both 29.

Yeah, I thought that was a little strange particularly since he hit a wall last year.  His snaps have been pretty low most games though so maybe he has enough juice.

I suspect we will play a lot of snaps with 5 on the DL.  No way they beat us just going thru the air.

Lots of people seem to be upset over this firing. He's not the only HC that'd been fired after a poor first year though

So some random intern at ESPN has a grudge against a defensive tackle? Bizarre.

Another area where the Avonte to Dejean upgrade will hopefully payoff, he’s just bigger and better at fitting the run.

Yup.  Very different rush defense now.  They have settled into their roles, and DeJean truly transformed this defense.

Likely because in response to the statement that Lynch built the team to have 2 Super Bowl appearances in 2019 and 2023, you seemed to be discounting the 2023 run, because they only got there because of CMC.  It just didn't add up to me as any type of positive statement about Lynch's GM abilities.  It seemed to be suggesting that he didn't play a role in that 2023 run.

I suppose my inferences were not aligned to your implications.  Apologies.

Reddick proved that he was willing to go to the extreme with his contract situation, so I can’t say Howie handled that situation incorrectly. VanG got a 2yr/$20M deal, who knows what Hasson wanted long term (he was in the mid-teens with his existing contract iirc).

The Eagles struggled in the first half with run fits against Green Bay.  They were better in the second half of that game.   The Eagles also have only allowed one 100 yard rusher, Rico Dowdle.  They should hold Jacobs to under 100 too.

Yeah I agree and I think that is the key to the game.  If Jacobs is able to run it will likely be a very close game.  If he is held in check it will likely be a comfortable Eagles' victory.

It's always fun to look at this stuff.

Looks like the trade netted, Cooper DeJean and Ainias Smith from actual picks in the trade. They then used 78 and turned that in to 86 which became Jaylx Hunt and 132 which turned in to 164, 201 and a 2024 4th. They then used 164 and 201 to trade up for Trotter.

So the trade up to 40 brought them Cooper DeJean, Ainias Smith, Jaylx Hunt and Trotter Jr.

Here's the other end of things. The players drafted with every pick the Eagles traded away.

https://theeagleswire.usatoday.com/lists/eagles-2024-nfl-draft-picks-traded-away-mike-sainristil-ben-sinnott-calen-bullock/

  • 2nd round: No. 50, No. 53, and No. 161 to Commanders for No. 40 (selected Cooper DeJean) No. 78, and No. 152 (selected Ainias Smith)
  • 3rd round: No. 78 to Texans for No. 86 and No. 123
  • 3rd round: No. 86 to 49ers for No. 94 (selected Jaryx Hunt) and No. 132
  • 4th round: No. 120 to Dolphins for 2025 3rd-round pick
  • 4th round: No. 123 to Texans for No. 127 (selected Will Shipley) and 2025 5th-round pick
  • 4th round: No. 132 and No. 210 to Lions for No. 164, No. 201 and 2025 4th-round pick
  • 5th round: No. 164 and No. 201 to Colts for No. 155 (selected Jeremiah Trotter Jr.)
  • 5th round: No. 171 to Jets for No. 185 and No. 190 (selected Johnny Wilson and Dylan McMahon)

Not that I have anything against Shipley, but Bucky Irving was sitting there and taken at 125,  The Eagles could have had him at 123.  They outsmarted themselves.  Irving is a tremendous talent if you have watched him all year.  He is in the Jahmyr Gibbs mold.

Bucky came out of college light (sub 200) and not particularly fast (mid 4.5s), but he did everything else well, particularly elusive. Fun to watch.
