I see.  I can argue that Johnson has been given a lot of talented personnel.

Goff -- #1 overall pick, Gibbs -- #12 overall pick, Williams -- #12 overall pick, Sewell -- #7 overall pick, Decker -- #16 overall pick, Ragnow -- #20 overall pick, Zeitler -- #27 overall pick

That's 7 guys out of 11 starters who were first round picks.  LaPorta was the first pick of the 2nd round.  When you're terrible as long as the Lions were and draft every year in the top half of the first round, at some point the talent will mesh together if the GM doesn't trade them all away.  I give the current staff in DET credit for being much better than the past few regimes, but the Lions hit a stage in the organization life cycle where they acquired a lot of top end and cheap talent at the same time.  Maybe Ben Johnson had significant input on drafting/acquiring that talent, and maybe he's the missing piece in DET who unlocked it.  Time will tell.

Johnson will get a head coaching job if he wishes, and he does certainly deserve one.  Like pretty much every other first time head coach, though, he's more likely going to have to build the type of nucleus DET has rather than inherit one.

Sure, and Weiss only had the best QB of all time and also a HC in Belichick who consistently put together top-end defenses year after year. Then when Weiss no longer had Brady running his offenses and defensive minds like Belichick on the other side of the ball, suddenly he saw success was a bit more fleeting than he expected. In any case, the original context was questioning how well Campbell and the Lions would recover from having their coordinators poached from them, not necessarily how well those coordinators would perform with their new teams (which as we saw with Weiss, can fail pretty hard.)

Do we have any update on Hurts?

Campbell will be exposed as a clown and imbecile once Johnson and Glenn leave. The guy is a flat out idiot making utterly ridiculous in game decisions that are covered up by the team's talent and play calling.

It's Tuesday, so no as there's no practice. We won't know anything until the practice report comes out tomorrow.

He can’t clear concussion protocol until he practices and they don’t practice until tomorrow. So that will tell the story if he practices or not.

But he was at a walkthrough right? That's progress I'd assume.

I wasn't thrilled with Shipley at all and I hope having him on the roster doesn't impact them taking a RB this year. Gainwell can walk. Loaded RB class. Take a good one.

You will get Donnell Pumphrey 2.0, and be grateful for it!!!

You do know that he thinks the NFL season is legit over because he thinks the Eagles are going to lose in the first round.

He says ridiculous things to get a response from folks.  Its tired and weak.

So, here's an interesting question I was pondering -- if you're a team like the Patriots or Raiders with a ton of cap space and no real chance to compete the next 2 years, would you consider taking on Deshaun Watson's contract for a boatload of picks from the Browns? You'd be assuming cap numbers of $72.935mm in 2025 and 2026, and then $26.9mm in 2027 after his contract expires (you could also restructure to push more money into 2027). If you're Las Vegas, with $112mm in cap space for 2025, do you ask for 2 1sts, 2 2nds and some more to take that contract off the Browns' hands? Is there any price and would the Browns pay it?

I guess the question really is do the Browns think they can compete with him gone and cap space to add players? The answer is likely no. But we saw a much smaller version of this with Osweiler. I think it's only a matter of time until teams try to use draft picks to dump bad contracts.

And we are so happy about that!

I bet 😂. BTW, I am not saying that McC is the answer, but he’s likely better than whoever the hell (retread) JJ is planning on paying peanuts to.

Absolutely.

Ironically, the Browns did this a few years ago by taking on Brock Osweiler’s contract from the Texans in exchange for a 2nd rounder.

EDIT:

finished reading your post and you mentioned the trade.

But yeah, if Cleveland is willing to do this I’d jump on the opportunity. Not sure they’d give up two firsts. Frankly I’d do it for one first and a few lower picks.

Garrett said he doesn't want to be on a rebuilding team. So that's likely in whatever plan they choose too

Was literally going to post this. They drafted Ward, Chubb and Mayfield, and the Browns being the Browns jettisoned the only guy to lead them to a playoff win in 25 years.

Preaching to the choir. Some of his in-game management decisions have been so mind-numbingly stupid. Though I will say that he's gotta be pretty good at the motivational speaker aspect of it. Those guys seem hyped up every game and hardly ever come out flat or show poor effort, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Yes. Sadly, he is no longer with us. He has been seen at team meetings but wearing sunglasses and propped up ala Weekend at Bernie's style. Teammates are starting to think he's shutting them out and ignoring them again but AJ Brown said "That's just Jalen. We're good."

Nicks competitive advantage knows no bounds.

I didn't say he had nothing to do with it. The question is, is he the main driving force behind it? The answer to that is my guess would be no, but I really can't say for certain one way or the other. If I had to say right now I'd put the main reason the team has been as successful as they have over that time is

1. Roster/Howie

2. Coordinators

3. Sirianni

Not a zero factor, but not the main factor.

I think I'd take about 8 or so coaches over him in the NFL right now.

8?

That's a crazy turnaround from what they initially thought

I hope they give injured Montgomery more touches over Gibbs.

Raiders let Pierce trot out to give an end of the year PC to just fire him the next day.

Clown show.
