Becton is a no-brainer for a second contract.  You 100% lock him up and you don't think twice.  All this time we've been looking at the draft for a Lane replacement, and meanwhile here he is already on the roster.  Lock him up, kick him to tackle whenever Lane's time is up, and then you plug Steen in at RG and the line doesn't miss a beat.

Baun is an interesting case because on the one hand, you obviously have to reward him for the amazing year he's having and the role he plays on the defense.  On the other hand though, it's difficult to gauge exactly what his perceived value around the league will be.  Too many times, too many teams get burned by signing players like him to massive free-agent deals only to have them blow up in your face.  It would be different if Baun was a stud in New Orleans and we brought him in, but he wasn't anything there at all.  How does another team assign a value to him when all they have to go on is his performance in a defense that isn't theirs?  I really don't think he's going to cost as much as we seem to think he will.

I could see Howie going to him with a respectable deal, and leave room in there for escalators in the event he continues to play at the level he's at. Give him a path to make those mega-dollars but don't drop it all in his lap right away.

Williams is a tougher call to make, being a draft pick we've spent the time developing and having Fangio very firmly in his corner.

Sweat could very well be the casualty we have to live with.  But it also opens up the possibility for the Eagles to use that first-round pick to maybe package in a deal for a Myles Garrett or Maxx Crosby, which I'm sure they're going to take a good look at in the offseason.

The other thing we have to consider is how willing these guys are going to be to maybe take a lesser deal so they can go ring hunting for the next few years?

Well said. I haven't even brought up Sweat as I think short of a cheap one year deal (which is unlikely) he is the guy to let walk. Unless they simply feel uncomfortable with the asking price for one of the other three guys then maybe you reconsider. Either way, edge rusher needs to be a high priority in the draft. It's too bad they signed Huff instead of Greenard or AVG.

Keep in mind, the Milton Williams pick is the one that caused a fuss in the draft room. Howie got his man. I don't see Howie's ego letting him walk that easily.

That cuts both ways though.  Howie's ego could keep him because he was Howie's pick, but you could also say that Howie could let him walk thinking that he could replace him just as fast with another 3rd rounder.

So hypothetically speaking, do you like apples or oranges better.

Oranges, unless dipping the slices in caramel --- then apples.

But this isn't comparing apples to oranges. Golic was a backup DT that rotated in and out of the game,  Solt was the starting RG and a one-time All Pro, and Joyner was at the time a play-making LB that would soon get pro bowl and all pro recognition for a few years.

Stop. Golic was a plug who benefited from being on one of the greatest DL's of all time. Joyner is one of the greatest LB's in the history of the franchise. Baun has had ONE great year here and in his entire career in his late 20's. You might want to be careful you don't pull something reaching so hard.

If baun and becton care about actually succeeding where they are, I think they'll both stay here at a slight discount. If all they car about is an extra 2-3mil (out of what will likely already be a $10M payday), they'll walk.

I'll never understand the "they need to get their big payday". In one year almost every starting NFL player makes 5 times more than the average person will make in their lives. Baun is on what, a $4mil deal? I know it's the way of pro sports but still.

In his first season as a starter, being moved from primarily an edge to an off-ball LB, Baun is receiving 1st team all pro recognition, playing behind a less talented DL (wouldn't you agree?) than Joyner played behind. So I don't have to "reach" to conclude what an accomplishment it has been for Baun. You can pretend it's a fluke if it makes you feel better, but I see a play-maker in the Seth Joyner mold --- an off ball LB that can tackle well, blitz, cover, and create big turnovers. All Joyner's accolades happened after he was 27 years old.

So I, personally, feel your argument that people that don't agree with you are dumb, is itself dumb and lazy. Now if you would have argued that you believe we already have a viable replacement for Baun on the roster, that's the type of argument I can respect. Heck, Trotter Jr has played 104 defensive snaps as a rookie and has an outstanding PFF grade of 84.7 (including a coverage grade of 90.0). While PFF grades aren't the end-all to debate by any stretch of the imagination, that's a good sign that he's a rookie with potential and has gotten some experience in meaningful (actual regular season) games. As encouraging as that is to me, I'm not ready to crown Trotter Jr as the next Baun. But in a situation where cap space dictates the decision, I'm fine with the cheaper decision. I just don't think we're that dire when it comes to cap space. I'd rather pay Baun market value for an ILB than overpay to keep Becton or Williams. Baun played 939 snaps and Williams played 501. Even with Trotter waiting in the wings for his shot in the NFL, I'm just as encouraged by Moro Ojomo's push for more playing time. So if Williams walks, we have a slightly more proven young player ready to replace his snaps. (William's PFF: 70.1 --- OJomo's PFF: 68). Williams may be a hard guy to keep because he may get a 4 year / 80M contract offer by a team that would use him as a full-time starter. We can't really afford to match that for a player that is a rotational guy. It makes more sense to lock up Carter in the next year than to win a bidding war for Williams.

How much does Baun being 29 and a one-year wonder effect what his next contract should be?

Its a push in my mind.

give him 3 years. He probably knows this will be his biggest payday and best chance to succeed

What's not to understand? There are no guarantees except for the guaranteed portion of contracts.

I do think there are examples of players leaving a favorable situation for a more lucrative one that doesn't pan out and at the end of their career, that decision may actually "cost them" financially. There are lots of paths a well known professional athlete can take and the most marketable are the ones that are the most successful as players. So staying on a good team and playing for less money could benefit your stardom and provide lucrative opportunities after football. Look how much money Jason Kelce is making after football. If he was an All Pro center on a losing team for the duration of his career, he probably wouldn't get near as much air time or the money that comes with it.

Vikings @ Rams moved to AZ wow. Not unexpected but a major change so close to the game.

Too long.  It should be 10 seconds for every Hurts passing TD this season.  Make it so!

Will be a Vikings home game now and it would've been partially so even in LA.

the right decision, but this helps Minnesota without question.

Feels like every year one game gets moved or rescheduled last minute

:offtopic: Slightly

Watched the last PSU and the Texas game on ESPN U.  Skycast.  Great view.  No announcers just the stadium announcer and crowd noise.   My new favorite way to watch football. The camera is like a closeup almost all 22 look to start plays.  Recommend it.

These guys already, right now, have more wealth than you or I will ever have in 3-5 lifetimes. When they squabble over $1-2 mil a year on their next deals it's petty and stupid. Even the guaranteed portion on a multi year deal is usually upwards of $10mil for a starter

What about going after Penn State RB Singleton to pair up with Saquan and for him to groom.

Singleton will be a starter somewhere. If you go 2 backs I’d prefer Allen, would be an upgrade over Gainwell

He was a total flop at LT for the Jets.  And he missed two full years out of four.  OG is his best position.  Stoutland is great but not perfect otherwise Dillard would be starting instead of one of the worst OLs in the league.   Becton is last on my list of Eagles priority FAs.  Take him at OG money on a heavily laden incentive contract to protect against injuries otherwise he can walk.

This isn’t exactly true. He didn’t work out for them due to injuries and organizational issues, but he played REALLY well in 2020. Looked like a future star, especially the second half of the year.

The difference for Baun is likely to be $2-$3 million per year, over 4 years.

For $10 million extra bucks, would you move to another city for a few years?
