EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

This Notre Dame fan is pretty happy tonight. Two great things happened. Notre Dame won, which is something I always root for. And Penn State lost, which is something I also always root for.

Wanted to share some cool news. Just found out I'll be going to the national championship to root on Penn State. I'm actually out here in State College right now celebrating. This is amazing.

Huh

I think Franklin was good enough to get the win today, Allar played the worst game of his career he was extremely bad the entire game threw 3 picks, couldn’t hit his receivers, couldn’t throw an accurate pass all game. I blame this loss tonight on him. If he played even a little bit decent Penn State wins

I mean when you are 1-15 against top 5 and 4-20 against top 10 it’s a bigger problem then just tonight. I’d argue the three best teams they faced this year were Ohio state, Oregon and Notre dame. Lost every single one. Penn State has enough talent to be able to beat better teams and not be as bad as they have been in those games. Tonight allar wasn’t good. However when your Qb is struggling figuring out ways to help him comes down on coaching. Allar deserves blame but penn state could’ve put that game away after going up 10-0 and instead didn’t. Knocked out the starter in the final drive of the 1st half and still gave up 3. No offense punting the ball from ND 44 is a coaching decision on franklin. Also Penn state gave up 24 points in the second half.

Sympathy is irrelevant.

This is his career. He has ambitions. The question is if his professional ambition is primarily monetary or not.

And if it's monetary and he goes somewhere else for just $2mil per year more i think it's dumb and petty, that's all my point is. I think I combined my response to you with one of my others regarding sympathy

What NIL endorsements do you foresee Zach Baun getting?

Xfinity … DelMarVa Power and Light … Urban Outfitters

Actually what is dumb is taking the path TJ Edwards took where he went to his dream team for less than market value only to play for a loser the last two seasons. It wasn't petty --- it fulfilled his childhood dream, but he could have made more money and played for a better team.

It is a bit long, but much better than I expected.  You actually had me right from the start … sine my Dad and I went to the 1960 game.  Upper Deck on the 50 yard line

For $10 million extra for a couple years?  I would.  Keep my house in the place I love, work for a couple years in another city, net an extra $5 million that could turn into $10 million over 7 years in relatively conservative investments, and move back to the place I love after a couple years.  Sign me up.

How will the product endorsement revenue in that new city compare to the endorsement revenue he will see in Philly?

Your comment begs the age old question, when is enough money enough?

See i think the opposite. He did what I would do, dude is already a multi-millionaire. Go play for your dream team. These dudes don't need more money, they have all the money they could ever need and then some.

I'd say they will be about identical.  He's not going to be the face of a company like you are suggesting.  And certainly not for $10M.

Anyone else think that Hurts is going to be absolutely terrible and cost us the game?

No? just me?

It’s a distinct possibility, especially with the rust he’ll have coming into the game. That said, if doesn’t turn the ball over, we should be OK.

Actually the opposite for some reason....I think first play of game will be a play action deep pass to AJ.  But even if this doesn't happen, I do see them coming out passing to set up the run.  Not the other way around.

I haven't felt that about this game in particular.  But the playoffs in general.  This team will go as far as Hurts allows.  He is the deciding factor.  The rest of the roster is good enough to beat anyone.  Hurts is the one potential limiting factor. The only weakness on the team.

They may have a one off deep shot early to try to catch the D cheating up on the run.  There’s no telling what pass/run ratio surprises the initial scripted plays may hold.  But this team knows who they are and how they got here.

Once they get through the initial scripted plays over 1-2 series, it will be Barkley and Hurts running with controlled low risk passing.  I don’t think there will be much of an opportunity for rust and poor passing to derail the game plan.

Interesting, Notre Dames Jordan Faison won the national championship on their lacrosse team this year.  Now one win away from doing it on the football team as well.

I wonder if anyone has ever won 2 national championships in 2 different sports before.

unless GB stuff the run

Fortunately, teams have been pretty unsuccessful at doing that all year long.  It’s been the game plan every week up through 15 and we only lost 3 games.

My biggest fear is a Hurts injury.  In a high intensity playoff game with multiple critical plays, I expect he’s going to run…a lot…In a cold game returning from concussion.  The backups better keep warm and loose.

Jim Thorpe (football and ballroom dancing), Bob Rule (hockey and lacrosse), Anthony Munoz (football and baseball).

That is off the top of my head. I would need to research a bit more to see if there were others.

Did Jim Brown at Syracuse (Football and Lax)?

No I actually think just the opposite.  He was playing lights-out the last time we saw him and I think sitting back and watching for a couple weeks will only help him.

The biggest risk I see is if the coaches putting together a stupid game plan, but I get the feeling like the players are poised to make a serious run and I think Hurts will be locked in.

Stanford, I’m sure but I don’t know when. UConn won men’s and women’s basketball championships in 2004 and 2014. Probably a bunch of others.

The QB is always the limiting factor on a team. You can say this about Mahomes, Goff, Allen, Lamar, Mayfield, Stroud, Stafford, Herbert, Darnold, Wilson, Daniels, Nix, and Love.
