EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

I count 49 names on first- and second-team All-Pro rosters, excluding special teams.  That averages 1.5 players per team.

We have six players listed, with young guys like Dickerson, Jurgens, Mitchell, and DeJean knocking on the door.

After Howie watched Chip let DeSean and LeSean leave, he stated that is hard to find talent and, when you do, you don't let it go.  Baun will be signed here.

Jim Thorpe (football and ballroom dancing), Bob Rule (hockey and lacrosse), Anthony Munoz (football and baseball).

That is off the top of my head. I would need to research a bit more to see if there were others.

Rule was a fraternity brother of mine at Cornell.  I should have thought of him.  He was a real character.  IIRC he backed up Ken Dryden on the hockey team.  He was the first team All America goalie in lacrosse.

A bit of trivia on Rule … he invented the modern lacrosse stick.  Until his invention all lacrosse sticks were made out of a single piece of bent wood.

Did Jim Brown at Syracuse (Football and Lax)?

That was my guess too.

Wish they would let go of the dog thing already. It's been 8 years.

Jalen Carter not all pro

😂😂😂😂😂 clown show

Lane is better than Sewell and should have been first team.

Bobby Wagner might be the most overrated player of all-time based on being an all-pro 11 straight years. He simply hasn’t been at that level for a long time.

I think pff is a joke most of the time, but if you needed more evidence, they even ranked Wagner ahead of Warner.

No, this good. Motivation.

I didn't like it back then. Felt like it was using Browns. It never really fit with the team IMO

Apparently the VP of officiating emphasized to teams before the season that the refs would be looking for and being less lenient with taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct. He also reiterated to all the playoff teams HC's and GM's that it will continue in the post season.

I liked it in 2017 because everyone wrote them off after the Wentz injury and they were underdogs the entire Super Bowl run and kept proving everyone wrong. But it's run its course and doesn't make sense anymore. I hope to never hear "Dawg Mentality" for the rest of my life.

Yeah I'm not trying to be the classic homer complaining about my team's snubs, but Eagles having no 1st Team All-Pro OL is pretty ridiculous.

Sucks for Lane too not getting in over Sewell. Affects his HOF chances, as I don't think he gets in without a couple more 1st team APs.

In other news, brutal year to be a Saints fan. That terrible season, cap hell, seeing Hendrickson and Baun on the All-Pro team.

Always thought they should have chosen something else

Let me know when the cost of living starts going down instead of up.

That question also depends on your goals. If you are a player that dreams of becoming an owner one day, you'll need every million you can earn and invest. If your goal is to  do a lot of charity, every dollar you earn can help. If your goal is to set your family up for generations, it's stupid to decline more pay. If your goal is simply to live like royalty and have nicer things than most, you'll need a ton of money.

I think it's easy for us to say how much money someone else needs (to live) when we make less than them. They only need what you make to live your life. But they are living their own lives, not yours.

Are you familiar with the 4% Rule?  It states that every dollar of annual income in retirement needs to be no more than 4% of your asset portfolio.  So a $100,000 annual income needs to be generated by a $2.5 million investment portfolio … with one caveat, the first $100,000 is netted down by your Social Security and pension income.  That means approximately a portfolio of $1.25 million for the first $100,000 and $2.5 million get each $100,000 after that.

So, with that known, what target annual income do you put into your budget?  Once you have that the target investment portfolio minimum amount is easy to calculate.  Anything over that minimum amount is cushion/gravy.

Lots of odd selections this year. The worst, imo, is McLaurin over Evans and others.

Evans needed game 17 to reach 1000 yards. Would have been ridiculous if he got all-pro this year

I think Lane is the only reasonable 1st team snub. Mailata was deserving but he went on IR and missed a quarter of the season so I see that potentially pushing him to 2nd team. Dickerson was good but felt like a slightly down year for him. Jurgens is always going to have an uphill battle with Humphrey.

I used to love the goal horn on TDs

Some track and field stars might have won individual events as well as a team championship in another sport.

Jim Thorpe won a National Championship with Carlisle.  I don't know if that was the same year that he won Olympic gold.

Pff is useful for trends/extremes.  If PFF has someone top 3, they are probably good (not necessarily top 3).  If they are bottom 3, they are probably bad (not necessarily bottom 3).  Other than that, it’s for all of us to use as a citation when the ranking happens to coincide with our argument.

Pretty sure he missed a couple games this year.

Edit: confirmed that he missed 3 games meanwhile Terry played all 17 and got 1,096 yds.

It did, because of the poster in Stout's office "Hungry dogs run faster"... and then the whole 'underdog' thing as the 6 seed coming to the Linc was the favorite to win that Divisional playoff round game over a 1 seed (which had never happened before).  It fit... but its had its time and needs to be retired.
