EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

If you read or listen to the All-22 guys (recommend Shiel Kapadia's Philly Special podcast), it is generally accepted that the Eagles have a very basic passing scheme.  Slants, mesh, a deep shot now and then, some out routes.  It is predictable enough to allow the defense to anticipate routes.

Not much play action or rollouts from under center. They are in the playbook.  We've seen them occasionally with Hurts.  Moore used it a lot in Dallas with Dak and it led to top-rated offenses.  It isn't Sirianni getting in the way.  It's the QB not being comfortable turning his back to the defense.  It's not a fatal flaw, but it limits the offense.

Also, Hurts changes the play plenty at the LOS.  We hear after the game about the times he checks into a successful play.  Not when he doesn't.  And it happens.

So don't blame Moore for the scheme.  It is limited by the QB.  And don't blame Moore for every play that doesn't work, the QB often decides what is run and where the pass goes.

Wasn't there a defensive player that said it was predictable and he called the play during the game?

It's not all doom and gloom on the Hurts front.  The good news was the Eagles got a big special teams turnover early and Hurts was able to consolidate it into a TD with the throw to Dotson.  That counteracted the slow starts.  Hurts has been able to limit his turnovers to a minimum which reduces the free points for the opposition.

I also like the current playoff draw in that the Eagles will see the Rams or Vikings next; I think they match up very well with both.  The Eagles can use Barkley to great effect against the Rams defense, and Darnold looked just awful against DET which makes me believe the Eagles defense can make him ineffective, like Love.

I'm currently less confident about a possible matchup in DET and a SB matchup against KC or BUF, however.

Roquan Smith.

There was a play where Brady said Hurts alerted or checked to a run, then reverted back to the original play call after getting a different look from the defense (can be heard saying "reload" at the LOS pre-snap.) I can't remember which specific play that happened on, anyone else remember?

He also changed the play which was the Goedert TD

So they get a minority stake and naming rights but lose the downtown arena AND have to bid on an WNBA team?  Brutal.

They wanted a WNBA team.

We don't know that and it's not the time of year to try that.

Also once the giants started to blitz McKee struggled as well. You don't think flores or the rams would blitz the crap out of him.

I agree something is broken in the offense whether it's the QB or the scheme but they are getting the wins which in the end is what matters.

He should be 2 over KP if nothing else

I remember it happened, and it was in the 4th quarter.

Dean with torn patella.  He won't be suiting up until next November,  if that.

If anything, Pickett looks constantly rattled in the pocket. McKee is a smooth operator

FYP

So, does Jerry know that no one else will hire him and he's like "Think you can go find more money, go try" or is Jerry just in his usual offseason hibernation at the moment or too busy jacking to clips of his scene in Landman?

He's had that book all year on the sideline, it was confirmed by media and his teammates.

Not the place for a book. Read on his own time, not while he’s being paid to play football.

Sign Baun.  Monitor Dean's recovery and then maybe extend him towards the end of or after next season (before FA starts).

It gives Howie a little more flexibility during the off-season with extending Jurgens and the Becton/Williams/Rodgers/Johnson decisions.

Smart.  Charitable write offs help at tax time.

Do you think Moore has trouble adjusting to what the defense is doing? Orlovsky's video he suggested GB knew the routes and covered them well and blamed Moore for the passing issues.

Do you think Moore has a hard time planning for whatever version of Hurts shows up, since he is inconsistent? Or tough when he's been practicing recently with the backups and Hurts was limited in the protocol?

I think like Connecticut Eagle said that their route concepts and stuff is very predictable and they do what they do. Sheil has talked about it all year. Now you can blame some of it on hurts’ flaws but I think some of this goes back to what Cowboys fans said when Moore left Dallas. Go look at when Moore left Dallas, Cowboys fans were excited because they kept saying CeeDee Lamb would just disappear from the offense for long stretches and they have these lulls that they shouldn’t have considering they have the weapons to be better than what they showed.

I said this after the ravens game and people gave me crap. There are far too many times for this passing game where it’s like pushing a boulder up a mountain and aj brown is just out there doing cardio. There are ways to get him the ball to get him going and potentially open up the offense. The problem is he had three targets yesterday. Aj brown had a target at 11:46 of the first quarter. His next target didn’t come until 26 seconds left of the 2nd quarter. That’s 26 mins and 20 seconds between targets for our best pass catcher and a top 5 wr. Then go from that target to his next. So 26 seconds left in the second and he doesn’t see another target til 13:40 in the 4th. So 16 mins and 44 seconds til his next target which is over a quarter. To me when you’re passing game isn’t working, you shouldn’t just go away from AJ Brown but lean even more into him. The fact he played the last 55 minutes of the game with just 2 targets and 0 catches is inexcusable. And this isn’t the first time this has been brought up or happened this year.

I thought everyone but Hurts played great.

Look, I’m not a "hater” but at some point players are what they are. This season, Hurts has not been a good passer, and this game was microcosm of this.

He made poor decisions, was indecisive, held the ball too long, etc. for the majority of the game.

To his credit, he made plays late to get us the win. The problem is this won’t fly vs the Lions. If our QB goes cold for the better part of 3 quarters, we are going to lose.

It’s really all on his shoulders because the defense is vicious, the OL is tremendous, Barkley is the best non QB player in the NFL, and for my money Brown is the best WR in the NFL while both Smith and Goedert are talented enough to be primary options in a passing game.

So it all comes down to Hurts. If he just plays consistent solid football, I don’t think anyone can beat us. If not, we won’t get past the Lions.

I'll pick on you to respond to the mob with pitchforks and torches but it could have been anybody. Nothing personal.

I may be wrong but I count that we had ten possessions in the game.

First possession - TD.

Second possession - FG.

Third possession - penalty.

Fourth possession - penalty.

Fifth possession - penalty.

Sixth possession - they stopped us.

Seventh possession - TD.

Eight possession - FG (after 7 minute drive).

Ninth possession - FG.

Tenth possession - killed the clock.

In sum: five possessions ended in points. Three were stopped by penalties NOT committed by Hurts. The Packers stopped us ONCE without our help. Last possession we ran out the clock.

Yet, somehow, it's all Hurts' fault we didn't score - what? - 50?

He wasn't reading instead of running a route.

If it helps him get his head ready for the next drive, then I'm ok.

TBH not sure you can count on BVS off that injury either. He might need a year to get back to where he was as his surgery was in December.

I think he had surgery in early December, with a 6-month recovery. I'd imagine he's good to go by TC. He's also an exclusive rights FA.

As of right now, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is the only healthy LB under contract for next year. Howie has his work cut out for him.

As funny as it would be for Cowboys to sign McCarthy to a new deal, it would be even funnier if they lose him to another team and have to start a coaching search like a month after everyone else.
