EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

I checked the seven sacks and this is what I got:

First quarter 5:44. Coverage sack. No one open. Hurts has 4+ seconds. Probably should have thrown it away. On Hurts.

Second quarter: 9:04. Rams stunted. No one open deep but Gainwell was open short as the safety valve. Would not have been a first down. On Hurts.

Second quarter: :30. Rams rushed two guys off the defensive left side. Lane took the outside guy but Becton looked inside and helped Jurgens. He should have taken the inside blitzer. On Becton.

Second quarter: :03. Hurts had to wait for the receivers to get deep for a Hail Mary. Nobody's fault.

Third quarter: 3:51. Hurts didn't see Smith on a shallow cross. Wide open. On Hurts.

Third quarter: :26. Goedert was the safety valve but the pressure was so quick Hurts didn't have time to come off his first read. On Jurgens.

Fourth quarter: 2:44. Naked boot. The OL slid right and Goedert couldn't block the backside DE. Hurts had no chance. Terrible play call. On Moore.

Wrong. He juggled it. Had he caught it cleanly it would have been a TD.

This is really the concern. How's the knee feeling

For years I've been told he's a cap wizard

I'm with the people saying let Sweat walk. He hasn't done much of anything. Same with MB. Either he comes cheap or he can walk as well. Williams and ZB need to stay.

I agree. TIme to move on from Sweat before he crumbles. Plays about half a season each year and totally disappears. Yet, been a hell of a draft pick. He's not aesthetically pleasing to watch either. It's a no brainer that Baun & Williams are key free agents to sign. The rest of free agents have to come cheap or forget it.

HE, you make me chuckle with your takes sometimes.  95% of this blog knows that if Tanner McKee made that same exact throw, all we’re hearing from you is about how it’s a catch AJ has to make.  The throw wouldn’t be mentioned at all.  You will deny this, of course…95% of the blog expects that as well.  It’s why you aren’t in the "middle” like you claim.  But it’s all good…keep being you

Yup...the bobble seemed to change his trajectory and contorted to bring the ball in...HE just being his usual obnoxious self

We have $29M in dead cap and over $25M in void years.

According to OTC, Hurts' cap hit is 18th among QBs next year.

Blaming Hurts' salary for losing FAs is like saying he was the only problem yesterday.

No.  First and goal sucks.  It must be a TD to have been a good throw.

They are going to load the box against Saquon like they did when Pickett came in for Hurts against them last time.

It's the most obvious game plan in the world, so Kellen Moore better have a plan to handle it instead of preparing for his upcoming Cowboys job.

Good win yesterday.  It was concerning that the Rams were close to the end.  Our defense, Carter especially, came to rescue and sealed the win.

Hurts held the ball too long and got sacked too many times.  He might not be allowed to take off and run as freely as he would like.  In seasons past, he would just take off after the initial couple of looks.  Running leads to hits and injuries.  Not to subject him to the risks is wise.  But not running also exposed his long processing time of reads, or his decision making, making him indecisive and leading to sacks.  The coaches have to find a way for Hurts to go thru the reads faster and get the ball out quickly.

Elliots kept missing PATs., but made the FGs.  The misses went to his left side.  Too much swing or too far to that side?

The defense tackling the is still an issue.  The LBs and DBs get to the ball OK but cannot wrap up and stop the carriers.

Glad to have the win and is closer to SB.  The remaining teams will also be playing well and harder to beat.  Our guys have to clean up the problems and keep on winning.

Ok I’m going to try to explain this simply.

Here is the play:

(sorry won’t embed)

If AJ Brown makes the catch he either flies over the endzone cone (making it a TD). Or it’s 4th and goal from within the 1 yard line if his knee hit and the defender touches him before he hits the cone.

The endzone out of bounds plane is infinite as long as he is in the air and he has 2 feet in bounds before he goes airborne (which he would have had given both his feet were still in bounds even after the drop) If he hits that cone like he did it’s a TD as long as his knee didn’t hit and the defender touched him while his knee hit.  It’s that simple.

Either way (semantics football talk) it would have been a TD.  Either from Brown scoring or the team scoring from 1st and goal.

To add on to the last sack. On the play, nobody got open especially to the side of the field he rolled too. So he could throw it away, but then it would’ve allowed the Rams to keep their timeout. So he was either gonna have to beat the defender with his legs at that point which he was not gonna do with his knee injury. So him taking the sack at least made the Rams burn the timeout.

can say throw it away and 3rd and 7 is more manageable to pick up. But you likely are throwing the ball to pick up the first down and nearly end the game. If it’s incomplete then the Rams have two timeouts down the stretch and the two minute warning.

Like you said the play call was an issue. To me if you’re gonna run that bootleg i rather ran it on third down. 2nd down let Barkley try to get as much as he can then do it. My thinking is they thought if they ran in on third down it be more predictable because they’ve done that before then on second down.

We probably won’t get much info out of them this week on that front. Can obviously pay attention to the injury report and if he practices or not, but they won’t give specifics. Best case scenario it’s probably a contusion, but that’s what he dealt with last season. If it was ligament damage, I don’t think he comes back in yesterday. Assuming they did a Lachman test for the ACL and that came back clear. Who knows with MCL or PCL though.

Even if you cut his touches down to 350 a year, I still think he's #1 and (barring injury of course) can still play at a high level for the next 3 seasons.

We'll see. 350 is still a huge number in todays game. There's only been a handful of guys that have carried it that much recently and keep sustained success. It's basically Derrick Henry, possibly McCaffery but you have to factor in if his recent injuries are from his huge workloads. Demarco Murray had that one huge year then came here and his YPA dropped from 4.7 to 3.6 (27 years old). Jonathan Taylor had 1,800 and his YPA went from 5.5 to 4.5 (23 years old). Josh Jacobs had his one big year and went from YPA of 4.9 to 3.5 (25 years old).

It's not impossible but I would say the odds are not in Barkleys favor.

Higbee fumbled on that screen pass.  Refs missed it.  They also blew the whistle so not sure it could have been overturned but should have either been Eagles ball inside the Ram 30 or worst case the Rams may have retained possession but almost 10yrds further back.

AJ is a big personality and can be kinda weird sometimes. I think that's why he gets lumped into that diva WR category, but it's dumb. He's not selfish at all. Seems like a good teammate.

I don't think he's weird, just misunderstood. But agree with the other not being selfish and being a great teammate.

Agree.  If Hurts is going to be a game manager, part of that is not taking sacks in high-leverage situations like in FG range or in his own end zone.

Easy to say, to throw it away each time. I'd say in many cases it's an intentional grounding if he did. Could be better with this part of his game. The other thing, don't want him playing hero ball and throwing INTS while being rushed. Needs to improve there. No doubt. But living for another play is most important and securing that football.

$21 million for a qb? Outrageous. The Rams are only paying...checks notes...Stafford $46 million for this season which...checks notes...seems to have ended not too long ago due to...checks notes...Jalen Hurts.

Lots of teams do, don't think it'll matter much if the Eagles OL blocks well, which they didn't last time they played.

I also think Hurts will be more mobile than people expect.

We need to aggressively load manage Saquon starting next year.  Give him an extra game or two off against easy teams.  Get another back in here to take more carries also.  Gainwell has been fine on that front but I expect us to lose him.
