Their plan is to put him at punt returner

I already said that. I'm curious if their plan is to actually bring him off IR and throw him into a huge game despite not playing the majority of the year.

I don't know about that. He did take one of the worst defenses in the league and turned them around to the #1 spot. It was an incredible turnaround.

What the Lions did this year was great, especially on offense, but I think going from 30th or so to 1st is an amazing feat all in itself.

The NFL likes to spread the wealth.  Lions best shot at one of these honors is ACOY.  Eagles have good shots with both Saquon and Baun.  Fangio’s chances will therefore be lessened.

My money is still on Sanders - would just make too much sense for Jerry - would immediately bring most of the attention and publicity back to the Cowboys -would make them the talked about team every week regardless of winning or not.  Just makes too much sense.  I'll guess we'll see.

He's pretty solid as a punt returner in terms of "holding on to the ball"  - I'm pretty sure they would be happy with that.

And yet the team was also forced to win in spite of...fill in the blank with anything else listed.

When there's one obvious reason it makes sense. When there's a lot of issues to blame but you ignore those and only harp on one, it's just obvious bias.

Again we're talking about a game they won.

You're just stubborn. Yes they won in spite of how Hurts played as their quarterback.

They scored 36 against us despite FIVE turnovers. They could have hung 50 on us easily, maybe more. And they had chunk plays, which the Fangio defense is not supposed to allow. It doesn't matter what they did or didn't do two months ago. They chewed Detroit up and they chewed us up in the second game. Maybe, if Hurts doesn't get knocked out in that second game we could have outscored them, but he doesn't play defense.

The defense played God knows how many snaps because the offense kept sputtering, 22 of their points came in the 4th quarter after our defense played over 100 snaps and CJGJ was ejected. The Lions were fielding a 3rd string defense

They scored 18 the first game and they scored 23 last week against a less talented bucs defense.

First game against us Daniels had a rib injury that affected him.
And Todd Bowles has Jalen Hurts' number, maybe he had Daniels pegged too.

But I hear ya

You’re right. He did everything he could to sabotage the rest of the team. Geez, @greend didn’t you learn anything in your time away?

Nope

As I said, perhaps we could have outscored them, but it doesn't change the fact that they scored 36 despite five turnovers. Without them, it could have been 50+.

I just think all the optimism I'm seeing here is misplaced.

Go back and rewatch the game. I think you’ll find it wasn’t as bad as we remember it. I’m still concerned but not nearly as much now that I revisited week 16.

He can fair catch better than Dejean

On your phone, or on your computer?  I wonder if I have a setting on my phone that I need to adjust?

That's not true. Eagles offense had the ball for over 36 minutes of the game. Commanders offense had 64 offensive plays while Eagles offense had 71  offensive plays.

He has it made at Colorado but it wouldn’t shock me.

I’m not sure if I would enjoy the chaos or get fed up with all of the coverage real quick.

Any notes on how Jake Elliott has looked during practice this week?  If there was ever a game for him to get his stride back, this would be it.

Elijah Arroyo from Miami really sounds like an excellent prospect.  They referred to him as a better version of Grant Calcaterra.  Better especially in attitude.  He probably will go in Day Two. As will Gunnar Helm from Texas, who also came across in their analyses as a natural Eagle.

Are you saying Calcaterra has a bad attitude?  Or this guy is just off the charts with leadership/character, etc.?

What was the 2nd half time of possession and 2nd half stats in terms of plays run in that game?

I don't know how much of a practice thing it is versus a between the ears issue. Kicker is a weird position similar to a closing pitcher or a golfer with their swing. When it goes, there isn't usually a rhyme or reason.

Reasons for optimism...

  • The Commanders strength of victory was the second lowest among playoff teams (Chargers).
  • In week 15, they barely beat the Saints (20 points in total against the 30th ranked defense)
  • In week 16, they needed a heroic fourth quarter to beat the Hurts-less Eagles at the end of the game (14 points after 3 quarters)
  • In week 17, they needed to go to overtime to beat the Falcons (24 points in regulation against the 23rd ranked defense)
  • In week 18, they only scored 3 points while Daniels was in the game
  • In WC round, they needed a game-ending FG to beat the Bucs.  Their RBs had 44 yards rushing total.
  • In DIV round, they beat a team that turned over the ball 5 times and didn't have half of their defense starters available.

They win five games in a row by a total of 17 points and then blow out a crippled defense.

I'm not buying it.

I'm guessing his "on field" aggressiveness level - specifically blocking, maybe?

Because other than blocking, Calcaterra has exceeded most expectations when his number is called, imo.

They DID outscore them, very likely if Brown or Barkley make their catches, and definitely if Smith catches his.

The final drive should have never happened.  But it did, and they took advantage a won a game they shouldn't have despite the loss of the starting QB and a starting S.

Optimism is good.  The Eagles are the more talented team, just like they were the more talented team than the Packers or Rams.   But, as with those games, the score will likely not reflect the discrepancy in talent.  This is going to be a nerve wracking game, but one that I believe the Eagles should win... just like they should have won the 2nd game against them... and they should have won against the Falcons.   They didn't win those games because they didn't finish well.   If they finish well, they should win this game something like 31-27... it will be scary and there will be a lot of angina and angst.

Yes, that's the way I see it too.

Revisiting the second game, I note that we completely stoned their running game, except for Daniels. Fifteen carries for 32 yards. Nine for 81 from Daniels, mostly on scrambles.

I expect we'll play a lot of zone. I do not expect us to use a spy against Daniels but I do think we'll do a lot of hard rush by three DL and one guy playing soft, not quite spying but reading and covering any gap that opens up between DT and DE. Or showing a five-man front and dropping a guy out. We'll look to isolate Carter on their RG and they'll look to help him out; that alone should be fascinating. Definitely going with two high safeties and Washington will try to pop a run or two early to get us out of that. Washington will try to spread us out and attack the light box, run RPOs at Baun, wide receiver screens to Zaccheus and McLaurin, especially if Rogers is in at LCB.

Regarding your final sentence, one of the rarely mentioned benefits of the Eagles running game success is that it chews up lots of time on the clock.  As a result the Defense sees fewer snaps and longer breaks between drives.  In the second Commies game once Hurts went out the Offense sputtered and the Defense got much less rest before having to go back on the field.  There were also Eagles turnovers in that game which shortened the rest even further.
