This is the elephant in the room that isn’t really an elephant anymore, because intelligent football fans discuss a topic like this. However, we’re not supposed to discuss it here bc of Hurt’s W-L record, since he’s willed the team to win on his own for all these years and not the other way around.  It’s always a new excuse - playcalling, turnovers from the OC position every year, it wasn’t his fault at all that the team went on a downward spiral last season, the running game is why he can’t throw for even 3000 yards in a season.

I do honestly think that we can become the 1st (or 2nd if you want to include Seattle and the legion of boom) to win the SB with almost no passing game, a dominant run game, and an elite defense since the illegal contact changes.  I am pretty certain at this point that’s our best shot.

Im imagining a game where the deep passing game comes back like that 3 TD AJ Brown game vs the Buccs last year. He threw deep twice last week, so maybe he is willing to try again.

Bringing that back can help open up the underneath stuff, and of course, the run game. Hope he expands on that aspect of last weeks game.

That’s not a dramatic turn.  A dramatic turn would be hiring Coen, then bringing Baalke back.

Especially if they move Dickerson over then there are two people out of position. I'd rather play Gates and take my chances while leaving Mailata and Dickerson together.

Whenever possible, you want your best 5 on the field.  In the case that Jurgens can't go, the best 5 is: Mailata, Steen, Dickerson, Becton, Johnson.   And its not close.  If you really want Dickerson next to Mailata, just run an unbalanced line for the rest of the game.

Mailata, Dickerson (snapping), Steen, Becton, Johnson.    There's no rule that says that the "center" has to be in the center.  Its just traditionally been that way for the sake of symmetry... but teams use unbalanced lines a lot.  :P  (I'm only joking about using the unbalanced line full time... mostly. )

I want to stir the Jalen Hurts pot for a minute here.

We all know there is a faction where he can do no right.  There is a faction where he can do no wrong.  I have a bone to pick with the moderates here.  And this happens to be the group that most aligns with national media and fans.  This group keeps saying they have concerns about the viability and performance of the "Eagles' passing game."

The *Eagles' passing game* features the best OL in the NFL.  The Eagles' passing game features a WR duo that, prior to this season, anyone around here would argue was the best in the entire NFL.  The Eagles' passing game features a TE that, while injury prone, most around here would argue is elite when he plays.  The Eagles' passing game traded a 3rd round pick for a 1st round pick WR that had more than double his current production in each of his first two NFL seasons.

So when discussing all these concerns with "the Eagles' passing game," why is everyone in this group so afraid to use Jalen Hurts' name?  Are we trying to insinuate that the problem is our OT's?  Or AJ Brown not being a true #1?  Or Devonta is more of a depth WR that shouldn't be starting?

Why does every single national analyst (and lots of local ones) feel more confident labeling this team's preeminent liability as "the passing game"???

I agree with this, as someone who has been both critical of Hurts and defended him against some of the more extreme criticism. Some have also blamed Moore, and perhaps he could do a better job with playcalling. But Hurts is the main issue in the passing game. Which is weird because he's had higher passing numbers in the past. In fact in 2023 he had more passing yards and 1 more passing TD than in the 2022 season which is considered his best, it's just that he had about triple the interceptions. This year it seems they are playing too safe and conservative to avoid turnovers and leaning heavily on the run game, which that part is good.

If there was, in fact, real concern about Hurts’ knee and mobility issues, then the logical game plan to augment a run-heavy offense with Barkley would be to operate the pass game with mostly hitches, rubs, screens — play design to have Hurts get the ball out as soon as he hits his 5-step drop.  Hurts is not a rhythm passer, though, and he doesn’t diagnose quickly, IMO.

If the Commanders bring an extra defender into the box (which I think likely) then I expect the Eagles should give AJ Brown 5-6 slants, hit Goedert in the intermediate zone over the LBs, and mix in a few go routes to DeVonta Smith.

I doubt he will be on the Board when the Eagles pick.

I trust your opinion on football. Something I just thought about is with them being in shotgun so much I hope having someone rusty at snapping the ball doesn't have too many bad snaps.

I've seen many national analysts say the Eagles weak area is Hurts.  That he is the biggest question mark on the team.  I've seen them say Hurts isn't asked to do much, referring to this year and not 2022.

So plenty of analysts have mentioned Hurts and his flaws and that he's not the best at throwing, going thru progressions, making decisions, etc.  The same as discussed in here.

You need to use a clone when you make a normal football post, I don't even know who you are!  :P

Some other SB winning teams with low/average ranking passing numbers:

  • 2000 Ravens: 22nd passing in yards, 15th in TDs, 20th INTs
  • 2001 Pats: 22nd passing in yards, 11th in TDs, 11th INTs
  • 2005 Steelers: 24th passing in yards, 12th in TDs, 9th INTs
  • 2007 Giants: 21st passing in yards, 14th in TDs, 23rd INTs
  • 2008 Steelers: 17th passing in yards, 18th in TDs, 16th INTs
  • 2012 Ravens: 15th passing in yards, 18th in TDs, 6th INTs
  • 2013 Seahawks: 26th passing in yards, 10th in TDs, 3rd INTs
  • 2015 Broncos: 14th passing in yards, 28th in TDs, 32nd INTs

Even though the Eagles are this season 29th in passing yards, they are 12th in TDs and 3rd in INTs. So that with the #1 defense and run game, could do it. Let's hope!

We’re good just as long as we don’t go soft / prevent again with under a 2 score lead.  It’s the only time they’re vulnerable because they let teams score way too fast.

We all know Howie likes to trade up when he wants someone.  Historically, the Eagles have never left TE to chance, going after blue chip prospects and doing so when their starter still had a couple years left.  Goedert's availability crisis, the lack of a viable FA option, and their unwillingness to entrust the position to a random mid-round pick means Howie may be willing to trade up in round 1 for the #2 TE on the board who won't go too far in front of their pick.

Kiper’s mock today has him going at 22.
Tankathon has him going 20.
CBS has him going 22
CNN has him available at 31

With that said if the Eagles pick comes up and Coleston Loveland, Walter Nolen, Shemar Stewart, and Landon Jackson are all on the Board, who are you taking?

So I guess it was difficult for him to get too "fired up” before the wild card and divisional rounds?  That’s a weird quote.

I just hope he doesn't start chucking it up all over the place throwing picks because he's "fired up".
