EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

Featured Replies

OK, I really think this Hurts topic has been beaten to death, resurrected and then killed again. But just to put some actual data into the conversation, it's helpful to really see what is going on. After the bye, we all know the team shifted to a run heavy balance. Before the bye (4 games), Jalen attempted 132 passes (33 per game), threw for 930 yards (232.5 per game) and most importantly 7.0 YPA. Since the bye, and excluding the 2nd Washington game where he was concussed, he has attempted 266 passes (22.2 per game), threw for 2,221 yards (185.1 per game) and 8.3 YPA. So overall, he has thrown less (33% less attempts per game) but been much more efficient with only 1 interception and an 18.5% increase in YPA. So overall the plan has worked -- throw less but be more efficient in doing so.

The issue is 4 of his last 5 games have been his worst on a YPA basis since the bye. 6.2 against BAL, 5.1 against CAR, 9.1 bounce back against PIT, but 6.2 against GB and 6.4 against the Rams in the playoffs. Here is his post bye performance before and after the BAL game -- the guy before the BAL game was playing very well.

If the guy from that 1st stretch comes back, which means hitting more chunk plays, we should be thrilled.

The dude is such a nice/good guy he pre-apologized for cussing. And then apologized again after he said it.

I wrote a LONG post about the WR investment vs output earlier in the week. Those numbers might look nice, and it's because both of those guys are great WR. They are putting up those numbers while being in the low 20s/high30s in targets per game. If you look at targets per game, you can eliminate the fact that both missed 4 games. We can adjust those numbers to 17 games played, but you have to do so on targets and catchers per target.

We beg and beg for good WR and finally have a top 3 and a top 10 WR in the NFL and we don't even look their way. Right now, AJ is getting 7.5 targets, down from 9.3 last year. DeVonta Smith is at 6.8, down from 7 last year so his workload is similar.

The bar has been so incredibly low for our QB to the point where people are OK with him throwing for 120 yards as long as he doesn't turn the ball over.

I watched the Eagle Eye Podcast last night and the first question was in a nutshell "why are we talking about negative stuff when Jalen had to play in the snow and they won?" Zangaro mentioned they had lots of questions sharing the same sentiment. Basically, how dare you criticize Jalen Hurts!

We should expect great players to play great. To point out flaws is OK. To criticize is OK. If you continually ignore performance issues and lower expectations, the results will be complacency.

Is anyone complaining about Allen throwing for fewer yards than Hurts last week? Were you aware that Hurts PFF rating last week was a good chunk higher than Stafford’s rating? Not close.

fwiw - I also laid out Hurts’s flaws. HE agreed with all of those. It isn’t about disagreeing on the flaws. It is about disagreeing on what Hurts does well.

It won't be that cold.  Roughly 45 degrees at kickoff.

That sounds toasty compared to the last couple weeks.

This has been making the rounds on social media. Am I crazy or is that not Terrion Arnold?

Sorry to hear about the family health concerns. I hope it all works out for you brother.

It has for the most part.  Taking heart medication every day now.  My 101 year old mother has good days and bad days, but that isn’t a surprise.  It requires attention on the bad days.

However, at age 77 I really don’t have anything to complain about.

Daniels almost lost to Tampa on the road two weeks ago if not for a lucky ass bounce off the post. He is not Mahomes and that isn't Andy calling in the plays on offense with Spags on defense. How many damn times this year were we told ohhhhhh the Eagles can't go into Baltimore and beat the #1 offense and RB in the league or ohhh they can't beat GB or the hot Rams. If nothing else they are playing in freaking Philadelphia with the number one defense in the league coming at him. It's BS.

Idk If they are or aren’t but I felt after the bills game (posted it on here) that Josh Allen and bills were super fortunate to hang on. The ravens basically shot themselves in the foot to lose. Lamar’s fumble, Andrews fumbled the ball then dropped a two point conversion. Allen was not all that impressive in the 2nd half. i think the narrative with josh Allen would’ve been he and the bills offense disappeared in the second half as they scored just 6 points if the ravens didn’t self implode.

I think you can win that way at home against Baltimore (creating 3 turnovers and hoping for a self implosion which usually happens with the ravens in the playoffs) but going into Kansas City, I am curious to see what happens. Because if Kansas City doesn’t turn the ball over at home and are not a self imploding type team, I think it’s gonna be tough to try to win that way again.

imo if Josh Allen and the bills play the Chiefs then the Eagles, I think Josh Allen has to play close to an mvp level to win those games. They beat KC the first time cause he was their best player on offense and their defense stepped up. Their running game outside of Allen had 19 carries for 48 yards in the first meeting

Well they can do better with the passing and still run the ball

They can.  I agree.  However, would doing better with passing come with risk?

Also, is a yard gained passing of the same value as a yard gained rushing?  Many would argue "no”

We all share our opinions. The discussion would end there if we couldnt break them down and discuss deeper. We dont just let them be. That is antithetical to the purpose of this very place.

Your purpose.  My primary purpose is camaraderie.

My secondary purpose is to listen and learn.

Plus, many people come on this board and rarely if ever say a word.  They don’t share anything, but they are important parts of what the board is all about.

If the ultimate goal is the super bowl, then it is nearly guaranteed if the talent of ALL skill players on offense is maximized. If the goal is super bowl, you shouldnt be happy with sacrificing contributions from elite players. You should be wanting more.

Your goal is to defend Jalen Hurts. Its the only way what you are saying makes any sense.

If you keep the main thing the main thing, and want a super bowl, stop saying its good enough. Right now they are just doing just enough to win. Thats a risky way to make a living. Why dont you want them to just dominate? Makes winning even more likely. Winning is the goal, so making it as likely as possible should be the goal.

Actually, that post was in response to a post stating that both Brown's and Smitty's numbers were low for the season.   But when you take into account that they both missed 3 games?  The stats tend to look better.  And when taking into account Barkley rushing for 2005 yards, add the rest of the rushing numbers in there, plus TE receiving yards - there are only so many yards to go around.

That said, I also agree that if everyone remained healthy all year and if everyone on offense played their "A" game most weeks, the offense would have done even better.

He sucked arse against Carolina.  The whole team did but no excuse there. GB and the LA were tough Ds and conditions and he played to manage the game. Couple of catches by Smith and Brown make that LA game entirely different.

Yeah now you've upped the ante. If anyone is coming here to learn,  then you especially can't let all of these invalid Hurts opinions go. Spreading misinformation.
