Definitely not trying to build around Barkley. This year was an anomaly for him.

Most knowledgeable fans realize this was a special year for Barkley.  That said, this year was in no way an "anomaly" for him. It's the first time in his career that he's had an elite offensive line, a long with a great offense around him.  He is a top NFL RB - so although he may not run for 2000 yards every year, expect him to be among the NFL rushing leaders as long as he stays healthy, with this team around him.

Yeah now you've upped the ante. If anyone is coming here to learn,  then you especially can't let all of these invalid Hurts opinions go. Spreading misinformation.

As to your opinions: "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.”

OK, I really think this Hurts topic has been beaten to death, resurrected and then killed again. But just to put some actual data into the conversation, it's helpful to really see what is going on. After the bye, we all know the team shifted to a run heavy balance. Before the bye (4 games), Jalen attempted 132 passes (33 per game), threw for 930 yards (232.5 per game) and most importantly 7.0 YPA. Since the bye, and excluding the 2nd Washington game where he was concussed, he has attempted 266 passes (22.2 per game), threw for 2,221 yards (185.1 per game) and 8.3 YPA. So overall, he has thrown less (33% less attempts per game) but been much more efficient with only 1 interception and an 18.5% increase in YPA. So overall the plan has worked -- throw less but be more efficient in doing so.

The issue is 4 of his last 5 games have been his worst on a YPA basis since the bye. 6.2 against BAL, 5.1 against CAR, 9.1 bounce back against PIT, but 6.2 against GB and 6.4 against the Rams in the playoffs. Here is his post bye performance before and after the BAL game -- the guy before the BAL game was playing very well.

If the guy from that 1st stretch comes back, which means hitting more chunk plays, we should be thrilled.

Have the sacks gone up since he's gone more conservative?

It's over, I guess.

They can.  I agree.  However, would doing better with passing come with risk?

Also, is a yard gained passing of the same value as a yard gained rushing?  Many would argue "no”

Passing always come with a risk of an interception but he's got star WRs. Don't be scared to throw the ball

It's never been about running less to pass more. That seems to be another disconnect. There have been plenty of times when he holds the ball too long when he could have just thrown it instead of taking a sack

He's just doing the usual routine. Although it's a bit odd/dumb he said yesterday they would be out there but now he's playing coy. We'll find out in a few minutes either way.

Statements, and tweets about statements, like that are so dumb.  What would you expect him to say?  "We really looked like dogshit out there today, John"

I think if the Washington DC and Quinn think like the Steelers and want to load up to stop the run, this can happen.  We already know they’re willing to go single-high man.  That did not serve the Steelers well.  I really believe we were about to see a similar performance in week 16 before Hurts went out with a concussion.   Weather conditions to be a lot more favorable for the passing game this Sunday too

He was sacked 13 times in the 1st 4 games, so 3.25 times per game. In the 10 regular season games after the bye, he was sacked 25 times, so 2.5 times per game. But in the playoffs, he has been sacked 9 times, or 4.5 per game. Going from the BAL game through the playoffs, it is 18 sacks in 5 games, or 3.6 per game.

So basically, it regressed at the same time. In his best stretch of 7 games, he was sacked 16 times, or only 2.3 times per game.

Im not advocating for this idea but I would have to consider it if we win a Super Bowl. Maybe go after Amari Cooper for a reasonable price, draft TE and then look for depth at receiver in the later rounds this draft and the following.

Dotson?  Wilson?

Thanks.  Holding onto the ball.  Ball needs to come out.  After last week, almost a must.

I was going to make that point. If you layer in Saquon's stats, there were 3 games after the bye where he was held under 100 yards -- CLE (47), DAL (66) and PIT (65). He had less than 20 carries in each of those games (18, 14 and 19 respectively, he came out early against DAL in a blowout). Now looking at Hurts in those games, he threw 25 times for 264 and a 10.6 YPA against CLE, 20 times for 202 yards and a 10.1 YPA against DAL and 32 times for 290 and 9.1 YPA against PIT. So each time Barkley was slowed down, Jalen played a good game. Now, that could be unfair as Barkley hasn't been slowed at all since the PIT game (i.e., since the concussion). But so far, the evidence suggests that if a team focuses too much on stopping Barkley, the passing game makes them pay.

Breakdown on the OL and TEs from the Rams game focused on their inconsistency in the run game.  Stout needs to get these guys playing at a high level this week.

It is not HIS W/L record.... another disingenuous Hurts defense.

Again, "neutral" isnt necessarily neutral if you are basing the middle on the actual truth. Neutral in your mind is where you want it to be, which in reality is a bit biased towards blind Hurts defense.

And I already prefaced that point about the deep ball because I have long noticed many people here with the lack of perception nuance when it comes to this.

I didnt leave out slants. You asked me to tell you what wasnt true about what you said.

Perhaps you would be happy with "median” rather than "neutral”. Neutral for me means not buying into the extremes, one of which you represent.

What some call aggressiveness other could call luck. They are going to be high risk all day. Stopping them on 4th down will be the ballgame.
