We also body-slammed and clotheslined the crap out of him (along with the occasional figure-four leg lock). Either way, it was therapeutic. Though looking back at him now, he’s creepy AF.

Got the song in my head now.

Money wise?  Huff. 3 years for $51M vs 3 years at ~$38M.

Size wise?  Becton.  6'7" 363 lbs vs 6'0" 233 lbs.

Reputation/Cred wise, which is all that matters, Barkley.

After the game I thought it was a C+ game from Hurts…I’m kind of undecided now.  The thing that makes Hurts look bad last night was mainly play calling.  I think at this point we should expect that he’s indecisive at times holding the ball for way too long, gets gun shy from not wide open looks, is willing to surrender to punt instead of potentially turning it over, is going to take a few bad sacks and can’t run E/W.  Outside of that he made some good throws (a couple on the run) and managed the game well.  It remains to be seen about the half time debacle…did he audible to that or was that the actual play call.  This wasn’t better than NO, Cinci or Jax game though.  It was a decent game overall, but nothing special IMO.  Barkley’s performance overshadowed how completely dumb Moore and Siri can be sometimes.

I wholeheartedly disagree.  For me it was an A- game from Hurts.  He consistently used his head and made the smart play ... drastically minimizing the chances of an INT.

In tonight's Ravens-Chargers game, the radio announcing team spent a lot of time talking about the fact that Justin Herber has only one INT in eleven games.  It is hard to express the value of avoiding turnovers like that, and the one INT Jalen has since the Bye was an amazing play by Diggs in the Cowboys game.

So, my bottomline is that Hurts is playing much more with his head than his heart since the break ... with the fact that it is a team sport, not an individual contest.  That to me is worth a grade of A all by itself.

He might be, but I don’t see it that way.  Sometimes people (myself included), want their cake and to eat it too.

I could be wrong, but I see a guy that knows the complete team he has around him.  A guy that knows there is no reason to make an uncertain throw.  I’m not saying he can’t take more chances sometimes, I’m saying he has at least embraced the fact that he has the responsibility of not making the wrong decision and the adverse effects that decision can bring.  Yeah, he may be being overly cautious, but that’s ok when other parts of the O and D are working the way they are.

You said it much better than I did.  No surprise, I agree 100%.

They have to keep him at this point. Looking at expiring contracts, they are going to lose a good player.

Baun, Becton, Rodgers, Williams are the top guys they need to worry about. Out of those players, Becton and Rodgers have the most depth behind them. If Becton walks, Steen steps in at RG. If Rodgers walks (and Slay is gone), Ringo is CB2.

Baun and Wiliams are keys to the defense. Yea, they drafted Trotter Jr., but that's a serious drop in talent. Let him develop as depth and ST. Behind Williams you have Ojomo and Booker, but neither are the level of player Williams is.

So, Becton and Rodgers walk. Baun and Williams come back.

I understand your logic, but I believe Becton and his agent understand just how valuable Stoutland is to Bercton's opportunity to earn a salary right now and into the future.  That, and the value of playing with these particular teammates.  They will be willing to take a team friendly deal, especially if Howie and Jeff can figure out ways to supplement Becton's earnins with endorsements revenue.

Stopping it requires hitting him, which gets you a 15 yard penalty. So you can't really stop it

Honestly a fake slide or a fake going out of bounds by a QB should be a 15 yard penalty the other way. If they want to be protected and defenders have to let up then that shouldn't be exploited by QBs to their advantage.

I’ve seen guys getting groped up and down and not called then a guy barely gets touched and it gets called.  So incredibly inconsistent this year - among the worst I’ve seen.

The last few weeks I've seen more Corners run through the receiver without turning their head to sight the ball without getting called than I've seen in years, not turning towards the ball was always an automatic penalty what changed?

One play that gave me a lot of confidence was when Hurts threw it out of the end zone. He would have tried to force it to Brown earlier in the year and possibly picked off. His patience is really improving.

What evidence do you have that Becton actually feels this way, versus you projecting your own thoughts on to Becton and his agent?

I actually do feel that the upcoming game against the Ravens will be the real test for this defense or even team in general.

The Ravens are known as a very physical team and want to bully the other side into submission. We are also seen as a physical team with a bully mentality. The game within the game is comparable to our last games against the 49ers. We bullied them in 22 and they returned the favor last year.

We will know a lot more about our defense after this game. It could be a prelude to an eventual game against the Lions, if we face off in the playoffs. Can we really stop the run on a consistent basis which is so important if you want to go deep in the playoffs.
Lamar will get his and you can only really hold him in check to a certain degree. Stopping the Ravens run game will be the deciding factor from a defensive standpoint.

I don’t know how any future talks Howie has with Becton and his agent will go, but early this season Becton himself said that the difference here with Stout and this staff is the reason he feels rejuvenated.  I’m paraphrasing, but he made it clear he loved it here compared to NY.  That may mean nothing when contract talks start, but he is at least on record with that…FWIW

But that play he had AJ open and should have thrown the TD but he spazzed out.

Well, we see what is happening with the Jets from afar.  It can only look worse from the inside.  I just don't think folks should anticipate a hometown discount for these guys.  It could happen, but they also have a limiting earning window and their agent and the NFLPA will want them to get their max worth.

Also, OTs still earn more than OGs, though that disparity is smaller now.  But he might also prefer playing OT and get offered more to do so.

Ideally, and I've been vocal about this for most of the year, Becton stays and is the eventual RT with Steen at RG. The hope there is you're paying top dollar for Becton to play RG and take advantage of Steen's rookie deal while Lane is still playing.

Is it more likely that the Eagles find and develop another DT under Clint Hurtt or they find and develop more OL talent under Jeff Stoutland?

It's beginning to look like Milton Williams is on the same trajectory as Javon Hargrave. I'd hate to miss out on that.

Ravens are a good team but their Defense can be had.   Going to be a fun game.  Yes this was always one of the harder games on the schedule but I believe we are playing better than them right now.   Again won't be a cakewalk but I'm confident they can pull this out.

There is value in protecting the ball absolutely..it’s one of the most important aspects of the game, but Herbert rips that ball all over too.  I touched it in a later post…he’s capable of being that QB with his arm, and at some point we are going to need it if teams figure out a way to shut down Saquon.  Originally i thought is was a C+ game…but like i said IDK now.  Playcalling is still an issue, especially in the red zone and i think that really hurts his overall performance.

We can beat the Ravens, but the offense will need to keep Lamar off the field. Baltimore is like us where they can just wear on you in the 2nd half.

It's not a "take the points" or punt on 4th and 3 game.

There was a different play they’re talking about…IIRC the play broke down at the snap, he rolled right out of the pocket and threw it basically into the stands on right side of the EZ.  The AJ and WIlson plays are ones i think he wants back.

Probably because many folks don't want to be seen as complete morons.

Yep.  This is what I mean.  This team is much closer to that Titans team than folks want to believe/admit.

For example:
Henry ran the ball 23 times per game over that 3 year stretch from 2019 - 2021.
Tannehill attempted to throw the ball less than 29 times per game during that same stretch.
Tannehill only had 3 attempts rushing per game.

Meanwhile, we look at this year's Eagles' team and what do we see?
Barkley running the ball 20.2 times per game.
Hurts attempts are at 26 times per game.
Hurts averages 10.4 rushes per game.

And when it comes to big plays, do they come from the running game or the passing game more?

2019-2021 Titans... Henry had 20+ yard runs (28) and 40+ yard runs (9) and 20+yard receptions (1) and 40+ yard receptions (2)
Titans 2019 - 2021 (AJ Brown and Corey Davis). AJ Brown 20+ yard passes (62) and 40+ yard passes (19)

Meanwhile Eagles... Barkley has 20+ yard runs (12) and 40+ yard runs (6) and 20+ yard receptions (3) and 40+ yard receptions (1)
Eagles 2024 (AJ Brown and Davonta Smith). 20+ yard passes (20) and 40+ yard passes (7).

In the case of the Titans, they were getting about DOUBLE the number of big plays from Brown and Davis, as compared to Henry.
And the Eagles?  Barkley is nearly matching the big plays of Brown and Smith by himself.  15/7 for Barkley, 20/7 for Brown & Smith.   (Granted we haven't seen this team with Brown and Smith a lot in the same game, but that just highlights even more how similar this offense is to the Titans back then.)   Henry was the straw that stirred the drink, and Tannehill was allowed to be a game manager and go for the big play when it presented itself as teams loaded the box to stop (or more exactly, slow down) Henry.

And what have we seen from this Eagles team during this winning streak?   Barkley is the juice for the engine, Hurts' job is to not screw it up and take the big play when it presents itself.   But, make no mistake, this offense is centered on Barkley, and rightly so.  He's having a magical season... not too different from the season Henry had when he went for 2000 yards in 2020.

This formula can work, especially if the defense can keep balling it out like they have been.  But, it cuts against the grain of the direction of the league right now.   That might actually lend itself to be more effective, as many teams aren't designed to stop the rush attack for a full 4 quarters and we are seeing that play out now.   Barkley's biggest runs are coming late when opposing defenses are just too worn down to be effective.  AJ Brown himself said it... "What's the difference since the bye week?"  AJ:  "We are a running team."

It's not a "take the points" or punt on 4th and 3 game.

The biggest disparity in this matchup is our offense against their defense.   Equally, they have a great advantage with their passing offense against our pass defense.  Without Graham to stay at home on the bootleg action, I wonder how our other edges will do in that regard.   The Edge will want to crash down on Henry, and rightly so, he's a load to bring down, so more bodies is always better... but one misstep by the edge against Jackson, and he's outside the contain and can either run or pass for a big play.   Disciplined rush lanes will also be extremely important... as well as disciplined run fits.    And our DBs need to stay with their man even when Jackson is on the move, better to give up 10 yards on a scramble than 30 yards on a scramble and throw.   I expect a LOT of zone defense this week, keeping the eyes in the backfield and not letting Jackson scamper through the entire defense with their backs turned to him.   I also expect a lot of 5 man fronts and bringing the extra man often in a pseudo 'blitz'.  Spying Jackson, IMO is just a wasted player, he's faster than the spies.  So, I'd rather bring a 5th rusher and work to keep him contained and force him to throw from an ever shrinking pocket.   This is a bull rush game, IMO.   Which again, it really hurts losing our best bull rushing edge last week in BG.

But, you need to get points when the opportunity arises.  If you can get the lead, take it.  The exception to that is the late 4th quarter... there you need to play the clock and the scoreboard simultaneously.  TDs will be at a premium, and the area that the Eagles struggle the most offensively, the Ravens are extremely good... the red zone.  The defense needs to get really tough in the red zone, and the offense needs to figure it out and get 7s, not 3s in the red zone.
