He only had a 1 year $4M contract. So even if he had an insurance policy it’s not going to be much cap relief.

That was my thought as well when I read the question.

So, looking ahead to Thursday's slate of games.

Can the Bears pull out the upset on Detroit?

If Caleb Williams stands on his head and makes plays like he did last week, they could maybe catch them off guard and sneak one out of them.  But probably not.

They better have A Christmas Story queued up and ready to go.

Is the Thanksgiving game against the Dolphins a 'look ahead' game for the Packers with Detroit looming?

Dolphins defense is meh but they're starting to gel on offense.  Hopefully they make it a shootout and force Love to go toe-to-toe with them.

Any DeVonta updates yet?  Listening to the Kellen Moore PC now talking about how it's going to be a more pass focused game against the Ravens.

Dolphins might just be better than the Packers.  They are a completely different team with Tua so throw their record out and I think the Packers are highly over rated.

It would be ridiculous to let Baun walk.  You have the guy in the building you've spent several seasons looking for.  I was anticipating the extension during the mini buy.  This needs to happen.

I could see Becton testing FA to see if he could get OT money elsewhere.  Same with Williams and Fred Johnson looking for starter money elsewhere.

Knowing if Stoutland sees Becton as someone who could move back out to OT later may determine what kind of offer he gets from Howie - one with significant incentives for starts at OT.

Otherwise, "settling" for Steen at RG in 2025 is perfectly fine.

I particularly like the Ringo Rodgers tweet from Fangio.  Ringo has been close to invisible (for good reasons given the team’s CB depth) this season.  I have wondered how he was doing.  He and Steen are on similar trajectories so far.

Bears can…Eberflus’ D has given Goff fits in the past.  Sadly, I don’t think it actually will happen

On the last game, definitely could be.  Love is wreckless and Tua is on some sort of prove it mission.  It’s probably too little/too late for them to save a playoff season this year, but I do see them likely breaking the weather jinx tomorrow.

Don’t care about the middle game at all… That will be dinner time

Love old grizzled Defensive Coaches (aka Jim Johnson) like Fangio.  He just says it like it is.....

If he gets this week off, you might as well give him next week off too considering the opponent.

I worry Howie prioritizes Becton/Sweat over Baun. The dropoff from Becton to Steen or Sweat to Hunt/RD1 pick is just steeper than Baun to any other LB we can find.

Assuming we can only keep 3 of Becton, Williams, Baun and Sweat who do you keep?

How about if we can only keep 2?

Normally I would be fine letting Becton walk and keeping the defense together, but not only is Becton good but he’s unique.

I think my priority is Baun, Becton, Sweat, Williams in that order.

That’s a really good question and a really tricky one to answer!

I mean a lot depends I guess on Nolan and on Steen? If they think Steen can go next year then I guess they could let Becton hit FA? But I mean man that dude is a monster.

I think if Nolan can keep developing then I guess maybe you use a high draft pick on a DE and let Sweat walk?

Baun is the priority I’d say. There’s nobody to replace him and he’s so damn good.

First, Sweat just woke up in the last several weeks. He was dormant for a few months straight. Would let him walk. Hope that Huff rebounds and draft high next year at end. Get the comp pick and not sign a guy who has prior knee issues and probably has little tread left on the tires.

I'd try to sign the other three. Baun, Becton and Williams. In that order. But the truth is they have solid backups for Williams and Becton and could survive losing both. Baun, is a must. And a game changer for this defense. Thinking Howie finds a way to keep all three.

I really worry that losing both Sweat and Graham leaves us small and inexperienced on the edge. If Graham comes back I’d feel a lot better about letting Sweat walk.

I kind of agree, but here's my view on the 5 guys.

Sweat -- if Graham retires, I think you see if a short deal (2 year deal with an out after 1) is possible. Sweat was clearly available for trade this offseason, and there weren't any takers it seems. Given his chronic health issues, I'm not sure anyone is giving him a multi-year deal with real guarantees. He may be on a series of 1 year deals at this point, and that could work for us. 2 year, $20 million with only ~$10mm gteed would make sense. Since the rest of the league seemingly passed on him last offseason, I could see it happening.

Graham -- if he wants to come back, you bring him back. He's in Kelce/Cox territory. He won't break the bank anyway. It's 100% his choice.

Baun -- It is really going to come down to the numbers. If he's willing to take a TJ Edwards style deal adjusted for cap inflation, then do it. But I really think Howie believes he can recycle cheap LBs and have Fangio coach them up and find a gem (miss on White, hit on Baun). If Baun wants Queen type money, he is gone. Feels like maybe only one of he or Dean is getting a contract.

Becton -- I'm honestly torn on this one. I'd bring him back on a reasonable deal, but if he wants real $$, I'd let him walk. Stoutland is a cheat code to a large degree. I have confidence in letting Steen play RG and finding a new backup in the draft. If you sign Becton, you have to at least think he can be RT long term.

Williams -- I think he has played too well and driven the price up too much. Ojomo is his natural successor.

That is an interesting take.  How do opposing teams shift the burden to Hurts?

Stack the box / mush rush / take away the scramble to the right / bracket #11 - basically force Hurts to stay in the pocket and find the open man and make an accurate pass.  Not really a new thing but with #26's crazy success, almost a must now.  Should see it this weekend I would think.

Yeah, I think in an ideal world we can get Sweat on a 1 or 2 year deal and grab 2 rookies in the first five rounds. That way we have depth for a year, let the kids learn, then move on quickly. I guess Graham coming back would mean you only need 1 rookie this offseason and can stagger them.
