EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

All I’ll say on Hurts. When the D is playing this dominantly and Barkley is taking over the second half of every game and on pace to get close to the rushing record, it doesn’t matter who is QB.

If those two things dip for whatever reason and Hurts can’t overcome it, then it’s a problem.

It’s not a problem now, so just enjoy the ride and see what happens.

This is how I felt just after the midway point of 2022. My expectation heading into that season was as low as you could get. I didn't think the style of offense was sustainable. I thought Hurts would eventually regress or get injured. I thought the defense would wilt against a quality offense. But none of that ever really happened. So after about week 9, I just said, "Alright well I'm gonna enjoy this and see where it takes us." And it almost took us the entire F'ing way.

We've all seen what can happen to a team when they get hot at the right time, so we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get to it. Like you said, it's clearly not a problem right now.

The problem people have with Hurts is that he doesn't play the game in the way that they want to see the game played.

They want to see someone like Burrow or Herbert, zipping balls into tight windows in the middle of the field. Hurts will never be that guy. It doesn't mean he can't be successful in the league, as we have all seen. It's just that our offense is different from one that certain people are demanding that we run.

The people who want to win games how they want to win games will never be happy with how Hurts wins games. It's just the way it is.

Hurts ability to run the ball and be a threat to run the ball is important to this offense.  I don't think you could just replace him and expect the running game to work in the same way.  I don't expect him to be Burrow or Herbert. Hurts can be an effective passer and has enough arm strength.  I would like to see them work on concepts that get them more efficient given what I think are his processing limitations. Shanahan has a passing scheme essentially built on bootleg action off of wide zone runs.  This team could be running those plays as a passing staple and we would see Hurts being very effective in that role.  When he has clear concepts that make for easy to see reads in front of him, he makes good decisions.   The Eagles' second TD drive was fantastic because of the high/low concepts they ran with Goeddert and AJ.   I am not sure why did not go back to that passing attack in the 3rd quarter.

Guess Goedert misses the next 2 games and hopefully comes back for the Commanders game. Just like Smitty, no need to rush him.

Against the Panthers, we might run the ball 50 times. Give Kenny 15 carries!

How is this acceptable? This is unreal. Seriously how is nothing done about this? It's not a small sample size that this is happening either

Would be really cool for the owner/GM/coach to say screw a fine, stand up for your player and trash the officiating.

Eagles will be down to just 1 TE on the roster. Jenkins and Uzomah are both out of elevations, so they will likely have to IR Goedert and sign one of those two.

One of Ainias Smith/Parris Campbell have to be cut for another TE.

Yeah, it's just us who aren't impressed with him.

37 min mark

Was watching First Take today and they were saying that the only question mark with the Eagles was Hurts.

Not saying I agree or disagree but it's not just some on this message board that feel like that.

Hurts isn't a good combo with any OC. That's why they all get fired. The common denominator in all the failing is him.

They dont all get fired. Steichen left to be HC of the Colts following Hurts MVP caliber season. That happened to be Hurts second season in that offense and with Shane as play caller.

Give these two a minute together before we pass judgment.

Shocker

Mr. Papier-mâché.

My takeaways from the game:

- That is now 3 back to back wins against good teams, at least 2 of whch will be in the playoffs and the other will be fighting to get in all the way to the end.

- This D is real. Holding the top offense in the league to 12 points (excl. garbage time) or even 19 points if Tucker makes all his kicks is a hell of an achievement. They have two legit MVP candidates driving that thing and for the most part the D kept them in check drive after drive.

- Fangio's still got it and has the kids on D playing well beyond their years. Whatever happened in MIA last year is more their players being spoilt than anything wrong with Vic's approach to young players. So many guys have stepped up - Carter, Miltion, Nolan, Baun, Dean and then the rookies continue to show up - Q, Coop and even Hunt played well in his expanded role

- Strange game from the offense. They were terribly inefficient at moving the ball on most of their drives. 6 of our 10 drives (excl. end of half/game) were either a 3 and out or only resulted in a single 1st down . Grand total of 25 yards on these six drives ! But what we did incredibly well was that if we did get a drive going, making sure we got the most of it - 3 TDs and the last one was a kill the clock FG. This is where we beat the Ravents - getting TDs and not settling for FG attempts. Whilst the D carried the day, the O deserves credit for that

- We've seen it time after time but whether its Hurts or the scheme, this passing game really drops off unless both of our star WRs are out there (but the impact is more noticeable with AJ than Devonte). Yes, they are both all-pros but other teams seem to find ways for their lesser guys contribute a bit better than we do. Two years in a row, this has been an ongoing issue.

This is where the gamble to cut Stoll may not have been the smartest move. Dude provides great blocking where we have a massive drop-off going from Dallas to Grant

I'd cut Ainias. He was a suited up but didn't play a single snap. I don't know why they even bothered bringing him back this year anyway.

Or put Wilson on short-term IR. They can also let go of Gates - Driscoll has taken over as backup C so not sure what purpose he serves and we should be able to get him back on PS

Parris was only brought in to give them numbers I think with Wilson out (AJ, Dotson, Parris, Covey). If Smith is back, they dont need him on the active roster.

Yes we have the other Smith as well but you arent playing him a meaningful number of snaps.

We're 10-2. We have a legitimate path to the SB.

We should not be making roster decisions on whether Ainias Smith can contribute to the team in 2025. Focus on today.

Maybe Fangio wasn't a problem in Miami after all.

back?

I'm still not sure what to make of the Packers. I know we beat them, but I think they can beat anyone and also get crushed by anyone.

I also feel like their strenght and weakness on O is the same. They just have lots of good but not great weapons (WR/TE) which means you can't cover everyone with your top guys or zero in on some guys to gameplan around but they also don't have the one or two guys they know they can count on to step up in a critical situation

I want him to get the record and if he gets close then I want Nick to let him get it

I was actually upset with Chip for not letting Foles break the record

In the scenario where Moore gets hired away as a HC and McDaniel gets canned, I'd 100% bring him in as OC.

Rest Goedert and Devonta vs the Panthers and get em back for the Steelers. Steelers defense is tough.

CMC probably misses the Lions game.

If the last game becomes meaningless because the #1 seed is locked in for whatever reason, I'd sit him and the other starters. Or at least after the first drive. No sense in risking injury to a critical player for that. It's a bit of an asterisk anyway because Dickerson did it with a 16 game season.
