EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

Steve Young was the closest ever to a 'pure' passing and receiving TD on the same play, iirc.   Ball was batted directly back to him (no reception by a teammate) and he caught it and nearly ran it in himself.

Allen's effort was nice and all, and having the snow in the background adds to it, but a self hook and lateral is less impressive to me than the self-pass off the defender.   Shame he couldn't take it into the end zone there.

Someone did score on this type of play though. Rich Gannon maybe? I'll see if I can find it.

Probably because if you miss, you almost certainly lose. And if you do make it, you might have to kick it a few plays later anyway.

3 minutes were left and the Browns had all 3 timeouts, so they had time on their side to get it back if they failed. Plus it was deep on the Browns 9 and only 1 yard to go. Converting the 1st and then kicking a few plays later would be the better outcome too since you are only going up 2 points and giving Browns less time to respond.

Seems like a 50/50 play. Just surprised since analytics usually lean to be aggressive.

Mariota did it and scored. He looked awfully close to crossing the LOS though.

Forgot Mariota did it too.

Found what I was thinking of, was Brad Johnson, not Gannon

I forgot about that one.   The rule for 'past the LOS' is that the ENTIRE body needs to be beyond the LOS for it to be beyond the LOS when throwing.   So, dragging his leg at the end keeps it legal.

With that in mind, I'm wondering if the penalty called on Dickerson against the Rams was accurately called. The one where he was illegally downfield on a passing play. If you look at the play closely, you can freeze frame it and see where Dickerson is as Hurts releases the ball. The forward part of his body is about three yards in front of the line of scrimmage. Supposedly you're allowed two yards. If the forward part is what is counted, then it was called correctly. I have no problem with that. However if this infraction is treated the same was a quarterback passing at the line of scrimmage, then the call on Dickerson was wrong because the back of his foot was still in the "allowed" zone. Basically it was about 1.98 yards in front of the line of scrimmage.

I'm still butt-hurt about the penalty against an Eagles tight end (Jeff Thomason?) on a fake punt against the Giants in 2001. The play worked to perfection but Jim Fassel screamed and hollered long enough that the officials got together and overturned the call. It was a hideous call because he was nowhere close to being over the line when the ball was thrown.

Incidentally there was a brutal, brutal non-call in an Eagles-Cowboys game once. I think it might have been the 44-6 blowout. There was some ridiculous Romo scramble/heaves it downfield play where T.O. (or maybe Witten) caught the ball. But there was a lineman about ten yards downfield and no call. Meanwhile they nitpick us to death on plays like that.

I thought it was closer to two minutes left. The number of timeouts the Browns had was irrelevant if the Broncos had FAILED. The Broncos only had one and wouldn't have been been able to stop it more than twice (TO + 2 minute warning).

The Bro' teams wires crossed in my head, you are correct.

Here's the play preceding our first TD. It shows how concerned the Ravens were about Barkley, plus, of course, some nice OL blocking , particularly by our guards. Beautiful and simple play design.

Five in the box. The MLB lined up in the A gap between Jurgens and Becton.

Saquon goes in motion and the LB follows him. Four in the box now, against five OL.

Becton turns his man out. The tackles erase both DEs, and Jurgens and Dickerson double the DT.

Big hole for Hurts. Dickerson comes off the double team to block the safety.

Dan Orlovsky does a superb job of looking at that sequence of no huddle plays leading up to the TD.

Close as I could get:

A cinematic and dramatic movie poster in the style of 'The Bodyguard,' featuring a 5'11", 325 lbs man with a round and fat face, wearing gold-rimmed sunglasses, a gold chain on his neck, an Eagles baseball cap, and an Eagles sweat suit. He is carrying another man who is bald, has a short stubbly beard, and is also wearing an Eagles sweat suit. The scene is set with dramatic blue lighting and rain falling, emphasizing a heroic tone. The composition highlights the bond between the two characters, with a moody and atmospheric aesthetic.

Farce the Music: Pee Wee's Playhouse: Country Reaction Gifs

Saw this was posted last night.  Still marveling over THIS defense.

From the D flat out losing the Superbowl to what, almost dead last in 2023?

And the gang and solo tackling.  Just night and day.:groovy:

1st in defensive points allowed/game (13.4)

1st in total defense (241.3 ypg)
1st in yards per play allowed (4.1)
1st in passing defense (148.5 ypg)
1st in yards per pass allowed (4.7)
1st in three-and-out percentage (44.2%)
1st in sacks (30)
1st in sack percentage (10.6%)
1st in forced fumbles (15)
2nd in passer rating allowed (78.1)
3rd in third-down defense (31.6%)
5th in rushing defense (92.8 ypg)
5th in takeaways (12)

It's pretty crazy how the AFC playoff picture is basically done and there isn't much of a race besides seeding. Current 1 through 6 seeds have 95% or greater of making playoffs. The 7th seed is at 76%. The next closest team is at 25%.

Nantz made a point to say the Eagles sideline was going ballistic after that play. I wish the cameraman got a shot of it afterwards. Clearer than what this shows.

Thanks.  We are blessed to have #53 and #33.  They are always making plays.

Would be fun to see their reaction like when SB jumped the guy backwards

I've been trying to find it. It has to be out there because no doubt someone recorded them

It's good to show excitement for when these guys play like this. Good locker room. Just another example of the team having fun
