I'm skeptical that Becton won't be a liability in pass pro at RT.

I think it just means to quiet or calm down but I could be wrong.

OK cap gurus. We keep going back and forth on who needs to be brought back. Fun to talk about, but what are the realistic chances they can keep all of Sweat, Baun, Williams and Becton? Let's assume Slay is gone, BG retires (which I don't think he will), Huff is cut and Bradberry is gone. There isn't too much other dead weight to get rid of. Maybe restructures for Elliott, Goedert, Hurts?

I'd be content keeping all four and using FA for depth rather than making a FA splash and then trying to fill holes from departed guys.

My guess is Howie can make it work.

Jurgens likely gets extended.  He's coming up on his last year.

Utterly foolish to cut John Ross.

I could see Howie sitting in a room with Fangio and Stoutland.  Fangio pounds the table to keep Baun and Milton Williams.  Stoutland boasts that he can make the OL cruise along just fine with Steen at RG next year if they let Bechton walk.

Steve Carlton is number 2 all time Phillie

I will go with Brooks Robinson for number 2 third baseman, but it’s a wide gap

The problem is your assumptions don't move the needle at all in terms of cap space. This is a simplistic explanation but lets say you Post June 1 Huff to get optimal cap room. The savings is $0. Post June 1 Slay too because that's the next beneficial move, and it's just $4M in savings. You have to normally cut Bradberry now and that's -$3M. Graham is more complicated but he has dead money. It probably would beneficial to sign him to another year and push his money down the line. But also keep in mind when you Post June 1 a guy you don't get the cap space until June 1, and not all the guys are going to be waiting that long.

There's no restructure of Hurts, Goedert or Elliott.

It's a big reason Howie is carrying over a large chunk of this year into next year. The optionality outside of the carry over isn't really there.

To the original question if they could afford everyone, sure. I doubt they will because it might not make sense long term. Right now they have the benefit of Williams, Baun and Becton all being cheap, while Sweat took a paycut. Everyone besides Sweat are going to likely want substantial increases. Sweat I have no idea how that plays out. I doubt he would sign for even cheaper next year.

Don't have to cut Bradberry 'normally', you just have to wait to cut him after June 1.  The only benefit of releasing early is to free the player up to sign elsewhere, the cap space isn't freed up early.  So, they can cut anyone they wish after June 1 and spread out the cap hit, you can only cut two guys early  and get the benefit.

Pitchers go in a different category for me.  They only play every 4 or 5 days.  As great as he was, he didn't help you 3/4 of the time.  Ashburn probably gets the nod from me, for organizational longevity.  Carlton is a great answer though, easily the greatest pitcher in Phillies history, and arguably the best LHP ever in MLB.

Robinson had no bat.  I think I'd go Brett #2.

They aren’t going to string along the guy if he wants to play somewhere else.

Sorry.   Braves affiliation makes unbiased analysis impossible.   He's likely top 5, but #2?   That's rare air.  I might go Eddie Mathews first.   He was a Brave, just not really with Atlanta.  :P  But, I think I'm still leaning Brett.

With VanSumeren out, I absolutely love this move.  I don’t even know much, if anything, about the player. But this move speaks to their commitment to their current identity.

He's James Bradberry.  He's getting paid this year for nothing, and frankly was paid last year for nothing too.   "So sorry, James, it's not personal, just business."

Howie:  "yes”

but Becton stays too

Easier option.   Eliminate the slide.    It is BECAUSE they are giving themselves up, and going feet first that they are actually more susceptible to these hits.   Change the rule.   If they slide, they slide, but it won't provide protection for them anymore.   When they are a runner, they are a runner and are subject to the exact same hits as a RB, WR, TE, etc.   And crazy thought, the QBs will get down FASTER to avoid the big hits.

The issue is the ambiguity and the defenders having to make fast decisions.  And when they go to tackle at the waist area, the QB's head ends up right at that spot, because they don't get FLAT to get under those hits, they just do a baseball slide.

They were doing some good things with the FB. The Goedert injury made the addition necessary.

It doesn’t matter if it’s James Bradberry. Eagles don’t operate that way. It’s also not his fault he’s getting paid "for nothing”. It’s Howies. He’s not putting up a fuss this year. You thank him for that and just move on. Not set a precedent for other players to rethink these Howie structure specials. It’s not even much of a benefit doing that way anyway. You still wouldn’t get the cap space until after June 1 when FA is practically over and all the guys everyone is worried about signing will have deals.

Agreed.  The money would be freed up for them to extend a guy like Jurgens though.   You get the agreement in principle ahead of time, and then you sign him after you release Bradberry... or you use that money to sign rookies.   Or you use that as the money to roll over for 2026.

And while its not the way the Eagles have historically operated, you have to leave yourself room to be flexible with changing climates.   The Eagles have a bunch of players they'd like to bring back.  It's unfortunate for him, but then again, I don't see any teams knocking down his door.   That said, I'd be happy to let him sell his wares on the trade market and ask for nothing in return... make it a future 7th round pick for 2027... or a pick swap in Round 7 in 2026... with the right to void the trade if he's cut.   Then he can catch on elsewhere, and he can miss those early spring practices that vets generally hate anyway, and then the trade consummates post-June 1, working out essentially the same as the cut option.

And yes, it's Howie's fault, but at the same time, Bradberry has been the beneficiary of Howie's mistake.  He's been paid a ton and has provided this team with next to nothing in 2023 and absolutely nothing in 2024.  So, I don't feel the team owes him anything moving forward.   The hope as I see it is that Howie had him insured and they get some money back on the cap for it.

Baun is a must keep. Williams is second priority. Bechton will get overpaid elsewhere. It’ll be interesting to see if Bechton gets moved to RT.
