EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

I think he’s here until at least after 2025. At that point it’s questionable based on how things go in the playoffs over those two years cause trading him at that point (the dead money is what it is) the cap hit is under a mil and same with a a post June 1st cut according to overthecap

i’ve said this from the beginning of the season. The way this season plays out and how he looks in the playoffs is going to determine a lot. I think he’s clearly back in 2025 due to the contract. if he’s fine in the playoffs and he looks good, they’re gonna keep moving forward with him for the foreseeable future. But if they lose and howie/luire/FO believe he is the guy that holds them back from winning a Super Bowl, i think the wheels begin to be put in motion. I think just like 2022 they will begin to get their ducks in a row. I don’t think they will draft a quarterback, but then again I can’t say that definitively because I didn’t think they take a second round quarterback when they just gave Carson the money they did. Different reasons for it but i don’t rule out them doing it and using "qb factory”

Be careful with OTC, they sometimes don't capture the rolling guarantees correctly. $30.804M of 2026 salary fully guarantees the 3rd league day of 2025. I played with it in Excel, and if we cut him 3/15/26, we have to take a total of $115.8mm in dead money. If we trade him, that number goes down by $51mm (2026 guarantees).

I don't think there's beef between Hurts and AJ.  That's just media trying to stir things.  My guess is they are still friends.  Maybe not best friends but still cool with each other.

AJ is just saying out loud what most of us already know.  The passing offense needs to be better.

I thought Zach Berman‘s tweet was pretty spot on with the whole situation

I brought up the whole AJ Brown thing before the game this past week. I said it’s been a problem that they don’t go to him for long stretches of times in games. I had a whole two paragraphs with the stats backing it when people just told me the ravens just made adjustments to him. I said that was BS cause it’s been happening in other games and after 13 weeks of bad pass defense the ravens didn’t just flip the switch on aj

Should AJ Brown have come to the media and been like passing, probably not. But this issue with him getting the ball and targeting has been ongoing for about a month now. They just gotten away with it because Saquon Barkley has been really good that it’s really coveted it up and no one wanted to really go into it. but at some point in time the 31st ranked pass attack will come Back to bite you in the ass.

You have to bear in mind Daniel is tight with Wentz and was here with him in 2016.

Are they tight?  I remember Daniels being upset because when they traded Sam Bradford, Daniels was the backup and Wentz was 3rd string.  But they moved Wentz up to starter instead of Daniels.

I know it's not Wentz fault that he leap frogged him but I remember he was upset about it.

I don’t give a crap about anything else acho said, I wanna know who the two guys that fought each other outside a cold tub in 2015, and on the Super Bowl team in 2017.

Me too! How many players were on the team in 2015 that went on to win the SB in 2017? Can’t imagine it was too many as we had a really bad year in 2015.

Cox, Lane, Kelce come to mind as big name players.

Dude come on… The media isn’t trying to stir things up here. AJ said what he said and BG then felt the need to say more on it. There’s no getting away from that and what was said.

The best way to put all this stuff to rest will be on the field on Sunday - let’s all hope that happens.

Oh absolutely! If Jalen throws for say 250, AJ has 100+ and a TD and we dominate the Steelers this all goes away. And then Saquon can complain that AJ ruined his chances to break the rushing record and we can start the drama again next week 😉.

I'm just talking about as far as their friendship or relationship.

I'm sure there are some disagreements or arguments about how things are going between the 2 of them and coaches.

I don't think they hate each other like some are trying to imply.

That's a rumor I have heard, that they are tight and get along. Maybe Chase is still upset we didn't let him play...because he sucked.

I think they’ve had a big falling out. I don’t think they are friends now and at one point they were really close. Does that need to be a big problem? No they can still win on the field. But something has happened.

Good catch. I still think howie and Lurie are going to come to a conclusion if the eagles have success in the playoffs or fall short on hurts. I don’t see them just riding it out if they come to the conclusion that hurts is the main cog in why they didn’t win.

I’m not saying he is or he isn’t. My point is more if it plays well in the playoffs it’s a moot point. But if he doesn’t and he’s a major reason behind them not playing for a Lombardi trophy, I don’t see lurie and howie just sitting there saying well just gotta make it another two years while this window of time with this roster is limited. I kind of think they are forward thinking and would have an alternate plan

I only see Neistat, not Jobs. No big deal. Just saying.

Also found this.

Ideas are cheap, execution is everything.

The above quote is from Chris Sacca, a venture capitalist who invested in the likes Twitter, Uber, Instagram, and others. His net worth is over 1 billion dollars. The advice sounds remarkably similar to George R.R. Martin who in a Rolling Stones interview (http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/george-r-r-martin-the-rolling-stone-interview-20140423) said: "Ideas are cheap. I have more ideas now than I could ever write up. To my mind, it’s the execution that is all-important. I’m proud of my work, but I don’t know if I’d ever claim it’s enormously original.” One the most famous YouTubers, Casey Neistat, has said, "Ideas are cheap. Ideas are easy. Ideas are common. Everybody has ideas. Ideas are highly, highly overvalued. Execution is all that matters.” I could find a lot more similar quotes from Brandon Sanderson, other authors, creatives, entrepreneurs, and others. Almost everyone agrees: ideas are cheap; execution is the most important.

What I always heard about him was he was super smart about the game but obviously didn't have the physical talents to match.

I believe Doug was saying they brought him to Philly in the first place to help kinda mentor and teach Wentz while he was sitting.  Of course Wentz didn't sit very long.

I don't think Wentz ever had any issues with Hurts, either.  By the time Wentz was sat down in 2020 it was due to his relationship with Doug being totally fractured.  I don't think anyone really thought Hurts was clearly a better option at that point -- the season was toast and Wentz needed a total reset.

I think Wentz wanted out more because he was fed up with Doug and Howie than because they drafted a QB.

Wentz had massive issues with the team drafting Jalen

Could be.  I noticed last year they weren't as tight as year 1 together.

But I still don't think they dislike or hate each other.  Most likely friends but not close friends.

This whole "who cares we're winning" is the same BS we were saying last year when this team was 9-1 and cruising.

It's not that Hurts *can't* do it, it's that he's *not* doing it.  He's missing reads, taking way too long to go through his progressions, taking off way too early, and making dumb mistakes that veteran franchise quarterbacks aren't supposed to make.

The fact that we've won in spite of that doesn't mean that it's still not a problem.

Bingo. People put their heads in the sand for 10 weeks last year and still didn't learn their lesson.

The biggest difference this year is we have a defense that holds in the first half but actually gets better in the second half. Last year's defense would keep us in the game for the first half but fall apart in the second half.

Is it possible to win a super bowl with this style of team in this NFL? Yes. Would it be way easier if we had any semblance of a productive passing game? Infinitely. There's going to he a game where a team stops Barkley, it's inevitable. Can hurts win that game? I don't think so with how he is currently playing.

Might be the most articulated point lesean has ever made

I never understood why Wentz would be upset about that.

Go out and prove that you're better and you won't have to worry about Hurts taking your job.

Of course he didn't do that.

Just now, vikas83 said:

He had issues with the decision, though.  Not the player or the person.  Howie called him and told him they were going to draft Hurts if he was on the board, Wentz objected, and Howie went ahead and did it anyway.  Wentz would hold that against Howie and Doug more than the player coming in -- same as Cousins with what the Falcons just did.

According to Favre and Aikman, Doug had decided to move forward with a plan for Hurts as the starter in 2021.  That might have been part of what got him fired.  Doug also never had the balls to tell Wentz he wasn't going back into the game against Green Bay when he was pulled -- he just let him hang there on the sidelines with his helmet on.  IMO, that's when Wentz checked out.

Nah I don’t see it bud. And look we doing know and probably never will (certainly whilst they are both here we won’t). But they are very close before AJ moved here. Jalen is the godfather to AJ’s daughter. Jalen was there when AJ got drafted. They were close. And now you see the tension, you hear the comments, you heard the stuff last year and now this. And now BG confirms they used to be friends and now things have changed?

There's a new narrative that I continually see on social media that guys like Chase Daniel and Dan Orlovsky can't be good analysts because they weren't starting QBs in the NFL. The fact of the matter is they have over 22+ years of NFL experience between them. You can make an argument that backup QBs often are superior at the mental side of the game, they just lack the physical tools of starters.

Like I said, could be.  We don't know for sure.  Brandon Graham even said like he wasn't sure.

Maybe they aren't friends anymore at all but i still don't think there is hatred or dislike.  McNabb and TO was an example of hatred and dislike for one another.

Maybe we really don’t know… but then to go from being close friends to seeing each other every day and losing that friendship? That suggests like something happened.

Not going into the reasons why wentz didnt wanna be here anymore, but that 2020 off-season was awful in terms of what their plan was at WR for a team they believed was a SB contender. just relying on alshon and DeSean to staying healthy was foolish. Because at that stage of their career, they were closer to the end and they were close to done. And if they couldn’t your solution was essentially three rookie wide receivers and Greg Ward. It was beyond ridiculous that they thought that that receiving corps was going to be good enough to carry them for a Super Bowl contending team.
