EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

Featured Replies

We look our best at the end of the half and in tempo -- when we break the huddle early, Hurts has time to study the defense and make checks as necessary. Maybe he is slow at processing and needs more time at the line pre-snap, or maybe he's just great at making checks (i.e., this isn't criticism or praise, just a statement of facts). So let's do more of it -- break the huddle with 20 seconds left, let Hurts get to the line and survey the defense. In tempo situations he seems much more confident in his reads and where to go with the ball, and his checks have been successful. He seems to struggle and second guess himself when we break the huddle with 10-12 seconds left, get set and go.

Does his girlfriend go to Carolina?

We don't want to run less and pass more.  We want to see the passing game work within the 25 or so opportunities.

That would make everyone confident that if we need to win a game in the 30s or execute a drive at the end of the game to win, we have the ability to do so.

I don't see what is so hard to understand about this. The passing game sucks right now. If we HAVE to use it at some point, we aren't winning and that's the issue. It's cool that we haven't had to lean on it, but if we end up having to we are Fed

She will, Bill is about to become the new Dicaprio. Cycling through college chicks and dumping them at graduation

Hurts' quick pressure % is only 3.7% of his drop backs, but his throwaway % is 9.2%. That's a higher throwaway % than QBs in the NFL who have a far bigger quick pressure rate than him. And a higher sack rate than most of the QBs.

He has been holding onto the ball waaaaaaaaay too long this season. Its one of the weaknesses and leads to a lot of sacks despite our OL being a strength of the team.

Its one of my concerns going into this week.....TJ Watt and Steelers could wreck the game if Hurts decides to hold onto the ball for 3.5 - 4.0 secs on average.

- Roll to his right and throw it out of bounds

Don't forget the roll to his right, slide down for a sack and 8 yard loss instead of throwing it away

Exactly.

20 - 25 attempts should yield more than 83 passing yards...and it easily could if we didnt miss all the open receivers. The passing game simply has to make a bigger contribution to the offense overall or you arent beating good teams in the playoffs all the way to a SB

My biggest pet peeve. I wish he'd just chuck it deep. Try to draw some PIs like other QBs

What I find funny about this whole "You can't win a Super Bowl without big passing" media debate is the fact Patrick beat us only throwing 182 yards.   The Chiefs rushed for about 159 yards that day but put up 38 points with those numbers.   That's looking a lot like our formula now.

Sure you can put up 38 points if you can rely on a phantom knee fumble to give you 7 and a huge PR to give you another 7.

Take away those 14 points and you get the typical output from that sort of offensive production.

I never understood why Wentz would be upset about that.

Go out and prove that you're better and you won't have to worry about Hurts taking your job.

Of course he didn't do that.

Maybe because they could have drafted Justin Jefferson, the year after he carried Travis Fulgham, Greg Ward and Deontay Burnett to the playoffs... and instead of Jefferson, he got Jalen Reagor and a backup QB tinker toy added to his offensive weapons.

I know I was upset when they passed on Jefferson for Reagor.

The number of sacks he’s taking behind this OL and as a mobile QB is ridiculous. I don’t mind the throw away as much, but you’d figure there’s some check downs somewhere given how long he holds the ball.

There were some bashing our OL saying they needed to be better in here.

Not sure they've ever watched football before, but, here we are.

That's disappointing to see he won't return to the NFL.

I get that, but I think the criticism over the last 2 weeks is kinda crazy.  You would think Jalen's been hesitant all season with the way some are complaining, but that's not been the case.

I don't even recall him being gun shy vs the Ravens, they just didn't hit on some of those attempts. Also, the Ravens may have a bad pass defense, but that same defense held R. Wilson to 205 yds on 36 pass attempts, with 1 INT and 0 TDs.

Against Carolina, we only had 56 total plays to their 69 and we lost the time of possession by a little over 7 minutes.  In truth, CAR outplayed us on both sides of the ball, but we managed to win anyway. The team made plays when they needed to, and won.

While he has had few spectacular games, he has absolutely been fine in the role he has to play for most of the year - Packers, Saints, Rams, Bengals, Commanders, Jags, Cowboys 2nd half.

Last two weeks but especially against the Panthers has been more of struggle. I believe over half the drives have ended in either 3 and outs or after a single first down (vs Ravens and Panthers). That's not a sustainable winning formula.

I think that's the same injury Wentz had.  Medical science has come a long way, but I don't think Wentz ever got full mobility back in that knee.

Wentz was "only' LCL and ACL, iirc.

Why are you upset?  Your handle is "Sack that QB" with a picture of Hurts underneath!

I get it, and your post/list just reinforces my belief that some of you guys are just haters.

Saquon wasn't here the past 2 seasons, and he managed to get to the SB and playoffs just fine.  AJ and Smitty put up great numbers the past 2 seasons, and both (mostly AJ) have had numerous good games this year.  But Brown gets neglected for 2 games and all of a sudden people are whining that Hurts stinks and they nitpick and exaggerate the flaws. Just own it, you're a hater lol

It isn't about AJ.

Here's what it's about.  Against the Panthers, the Eagles had 83 net passing yards.   Hurts put up 108 passing yards and there were 4 sacks for 25 yards... 1 of which he sacked himself at the end of the game.

Against the Ravens, the Eagles had 112 net passing yards.  And there were 2 more sacks.

That's a bad trend.

And more than that... there were plays to be made that he missed.  It's as simple as that, its not just that they aren't succeeding in the passing game, its that HE is not succeeding in the passing game.  The plays are there to be made, but they aren't happening.  And that's why there's a rift or whatever with Brown.  He's open, and he wants the ball.  Rightly so.  He's the second best offensive player on the team, and he's a difference maker.  He needs to be involved way more than he is.   And that only happens when Hurts is playing right.

Ever since I made him the pic he's regressed. Thinking about changing it to Jared Goff.

FWIW, I don't think Hurts is the entire problem.  He is an issue.  He has struggled in the pocket.  They have played inconsistently.  There is also disconnect on the play calling side of the ball.

The first quarter disappearing act is getting old.

Can't believe that Bill Belichick accepting a college coaching gig.  He's 72 -- how many seasons does he last in Chapel Hill before he retires for good?
