EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

I was just looking at Hurts stats for the year. There’s definitely room for improvement but I also don’t think things are as bad as is currently being made out.

He’s thrown for over 300 yards just once but he’s thrown over 220 yards 6 times. And he’s thrown over 200 yards 7 times.

He needs a better passing game on Sunday and I think if he does then that will quieten a lot. The bigger problem is the throw aways and the sacks he’s taking. If he can reduce those and turn some of them in to completions suddenly things like very different.

He needs to improve no doubt but he’s down at times this year he can do more and be better.

The best thing he’s done since the bye has been limiting turnovers and dumb plays. It was a huge issue last year and reared its head in week 1 against GB causing concern. He deserves credit for getting that right. But he’s gone so far to the other side of the spectrum of playing safe, it’s taking away the numbers everyone wants to see. If you want those back, you’re probably going to have to take the good with the bad because the turnovers will probably return if he starts to force things.

I love the identity of this team being run first and defense. I know it goes against the trend of going deep in the playoffs historically, but Hurts did nothing in the playoffs in 2022 and they walked to the Super Bowl. I know they’ll have to face better competition this year than NYG and SF with no Purdy but this defense is better than 2022. And I also know they’re paying AJ and DeVonta big money.

I just don’t want them to turn the dial too far and have Hurts throwing 45 times a game. I don’t think that’s a good recipe. The Cincinnati game had the best formula for them with Hurts only throwing 20 times but being efficient on almost every drop back. I don’t think they need to do much more than that, but he needs to be better with the plays that are called passes.

This is objectively a problem that needs to be dealt with.

Recency bias is very common for the blog. And he did just have one of the worst games of the year, plus this drama with AJ certainly makes things that much worse. But yeah, overall for the whole season, he hasn't be "trash" like so many are saying.

Ok so you would prefer a QB who passes for 40 TD’s and 5000 yards but wins 3-4 games a season?

I’m not sure how you read all this into what I was saying.

I was simply stating that wins - without question - are always regarded as an important stat for QB’s and the further you go into playoff wins, conference championship wins and ultimately Super Bowl wins the more important they become.

The above is what I was referring to that was a false dilemma.

Dilemma you presented:
Option A: Being 100% satisfied with Hurts' current performance (and stats) or
Option B: Winning 3 or 4 games a year with a QB that puts up 5000 yards and 40 TDs.

There's a huge spectrum between those extremes.

Awful numbers. Can't attribute much of that to play design as that starts to fall apart after ~3 seconds. It's just poor decision making and awareness.

Doesn't seem like QBs throw for 300 plus currently except maybe Burrow.

I think there's a happy medium but I rather Jalen continue to limit turnovers at all cost.  Those negative plays really can hurt the team. We are playing the Steelers this week and they lead the league in Turnovers.  The last thing I want to happen is Jalen start forcing things.   I get it, he used to do that all the time but he's playing clean football.  1 Pick in 9 weeks is amazing after all the talk of him being a gunslinger, turnover machine and playing Hero Ball with AJ last year.

I'd love to see what the WRs do when Hurts has a ton of time and/or scrambles around.  Are they getting open and Hurts just isn't seeing them or are they not getting open?

It seems like when Mahomes and Allen scramble around for a few seconds that someone will break open.

That's not mentioning a percentage.   The Eagles go to that well way more than other teams.  I'm frankly not sure that's a good thing, in fact, I'm pretty sure that it's not.  They give away opportunities for big plays on 3rd and short in the middle of the field because they settle for getting 1 yard.

But, the fact that the Eagles hit on the sneak at a rate of like 93-95% versus the league average over 83%.  It's really not that great a delta.  Its nice, but its not some massive advantage over ALL the other teams in the league, and even against the league average its only 1 extra conversion for every 10 attempts.  It's dominance is highly overrated.  It's nice to have in the back pocket for big moments, but they rely on it way too much.

Man the Hurts hand wringing and irrational hate in here make this place insufferable. It's fine to criticize but just the absolutely moronic hate and pretending that the last 2 games are the mean and not the likely outliers considering the rest of his career suck the joy out of being a fan of an 11-2 team with a defense and running game that might be able to carry regardless.

The issue is not the aggregate, but more about the current trend.  It has really tailed off in recent weeks.  83 net passing yards last week is bad.

Yeah, sometimes it's good to take a break from here if you want to have a peaceful optimistic day.

Correct.

On designed runs? Huh? Do you mean scrambles?

Well he scrambled away from defenders on every run so it is hard to say.  Take the sack where he slid and said he didn’t throw it away because it was RPO and he didn’t want the penalty (flawed thinking). I think at that point he had taken the run option. That’s part of the problem dissecting any play. We have to make assumptions as to what was called.

On the flipside, in 2024 NFL, every advantage goes towards the passing offense. Hurts has 2 of the best WR in the NFL. He's thrown for 200 yards or less 7 times (202 included). You can't pass for 200 yards? Hell, he's thrown for less than 120 yards THREE times.

The passing game is in serious need of help.

It's not exact to what you're saying but in 2012 the top 3 QB's in passing yardage all threw for over 4900 yards (Brees threw for 5100) and none of them had a winning record. Adrian Peterson won MVP, the last time an RB won.

Russell Wilson never broke 3500 yards his first 3 years and the Seahawks won 36 regular season games over that span and went to the Superbowl twice winning one. Since then he's thrown for 4000+ 4 times and 30+ TD's 5 times and hasn't been back to the big dance once.

It's almost like there's always more to it than gaudy QB numbers.
