EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

Honestly, you can't really count last year if you are judging Hurts' playoff record as it was a complete team collapse thru the last six games and that included the coaching.  The one game that makes sense to really look at is the SB.

I'm just imagining the coaches going through film and trying to correct things and Hurts saying,  "Hey coach, when did winning not matter?"

Well ... he had better start passing for 400 yards a game, because it's obvious you can't win in the NFL if you don't.

300 would be huge progress

You don’t want this team to go to the Super Bowl?

No, we want them to WIN it.

and Hurts is the weak link in that goal now

So you would rather see a 4 yard pass to Dotson than a 5 yard run by Barkley? That's your take on what would make this offense great?

No I didn’t say that! But too many drives stall because Hurts misses a read, throws it away or takes a sack. Barkley can still get his whilst having a more effective and consistent pass game.

We have one of the most efficient offenses in the league. So you are trying to break something that isn't broken. Tell me, how smart do u think that is?

Potentially depending on how a SB game shakes out.  If it turns into a wide open affair then yeah.  If it is a tight low to mid scoring slug fest then Hurts is a clear asset.

Taking sacks and missing throws is a huge liability in either scenario

Having no turnovers and converting 3rd downs to extend key drives with a combination of his legs and his arms is a massive advantage in one of the scenarios.

Goff is Detroit's weakest link. So at least we have that going for us.

It doesn’t need to be even 300.  They are averaging darn near 200 on the ground.  Add 220-250 passing and that’s the ticket.  He just needs to be a little less cautious and let it go when it’s obviously there.  He’s gone way overboard with his effort to protect the ball.

This isn’t last year, he now has a defense that can help if he takes more chances and his turnovers go up a tick.  It’s not like he has to become reckless, he just needs just pull the damn trigger on the obvious ones.  They have been there, and he’s been more timid.  He’s done it before.  That’s why I’m not too concerned

Players on the team agree that their needs to be improvement. Some have openly said as much, as we all know.

The passing game has not been where it should/needs to be and we've still been able to score and win games.

Both can be true, I don't know why people keep trying to split them.

Another good line for the players to tell the coaches at practice and in meetings this week.

So wait… you are saying that completing a few more passes a game and taking a few less sacks wouldn’t be a good thing?

I think the return of Bryce Huff as a backup rotational edge rusher will actually be a welcomed addition to the defense.  He’s been left for dead, but I wonder if there is any word on his return.

It's not trying to fix something that isn't broken,  it's wanting plays to be made that are open.

The play last Sunday where Brown is wide open down the right side, wide open, Hurts with great protection, looks right at the wide open Brown, watches him get more wide open, then checks it down to Barkley for a short gain.  We want Hurts to make the correct decision and throw the ball to Brown.  Brown was obviously his first read as he was staring him down and he makes the wrong decision.   Is it too much to ask for your QB to hit the wide open first option?  I don't think so.

Seems like the issue with Jalen is seeing the field and anticipation. When he actually throws the ball in rhythm and knows where he wants to go with the ball he looks perfectly capable. Even without having the strongest arm he throws some remarkably accurate deep balls.

It’s the plays where a guy is open for a flash and he’s just a little late on pulling the trigger so he moves on. Or there’s a point of the route where the receiver is coming back but he waits untils the receiver has already made his break instead of throwing it beforehand.

Early in the season he was a turnover machine so maybe they sat him down and said "hey man make sure you see it before you throw it. We can lean on the run game.”

And it maybe it worked but now he’s gun shy.

Either way, he needs to adjust his timing or the clock in his head or something.

9 wins in a row ain’t too shabby though. I think they whoop the Steelers too. 🤞🏻

He wasn't looking at the receiver. For you not to understand that is telling of your football knowledge.

I can give you screens. Last time we were really good at them was with Andy Reid. I think we were ok at them with Chip. Havent even been half decent at them and barely attempt them in a long time. If we could be totally honest, I know its a lot to ask, but Hurts is innacurate on screen passes for some reason and sometimes his passes kill the timing of that play.

RPOs- only reason Hurts had such major success in 2022. A master of them back then. Defenses figured out how to make him second guess them and slow it down.

Route Concepts- Hurts cant handle/process complicated stuff.

Screens are not on Jalen. Jalen is one of the most accurate passers in the NFL AND they're the easiest reads for QB as they're 1 read plays. If he can't process like you say (that's false) he should be doing more of this.

The Shanahan tree has some of the best route concepts and is also simple for the QB.

He's had 3 straight games with under 200 yards, he isn't trending in the right direction.

And anyone praising Goff just because he had 3 TDs is an idiot, that doesn't justify anything. No QB should be praised for being carried by the rest of the team. It was annoying when people were doing it with Purdy in 2022 and it's annoying now.

So was Goff's 15-30 - 240 yards - 2TD - 5INT game better because he had more yards? Also, are good team's carried by their QB? Dan Marino certainly carried Miami for years. Joe Burrow is carrying his team. Does that make those team's good? Which team is better --- the Eagles or Bengals?

Rewatching the pass plays, Jalen misses AJ over the top for TD early (takes the check down to Dotson for a short gain) and throws incomplete to Wilson rather than giving AJ a chance on a go route vs man (CAR blitz, nice pocket). I feel like if he hits on these plays, and we have a typical Hurts game. Not highly efficient, but a couple of shot plays that breaks the defense.

Otherwise, there was a knocked down pass at the LoS early which seemed to spook Jalen away from most of the quick slants for the remainder of the game. Any trash up front, and he seemed unwilling to try to throw around it despite AJ/Smitty breaking against off coverage for seemingly easy completions.

Finally, this might be common in the NFL but Jalen seems to be reading half the field. Defenders can play pretty loose on the backside, when Jalen’s gaze is to the other side. He doesn’t flip back quickly, and when he does the clock has gone off in his head and he’s in scramble mode so he has to find the receivers out of structure.

Please.  Looking right at him.  As for football knowledge, your arrogance is pathetic. Be knowledgeable but remove being a **** about it.
