This whole season between performance and image/press conferences/status, it’s felt like Saquon is one of the only adults in the room. Mailata is up there too. That’s usually supposed to be the quarterback’s job but they’ve taken it on. Used to to think it was Graham but then he had that dumb quote this week that he had to retract. You can’t feed the media anything and guys like Saquon get it. People complained about paying an RB top money but he’s been worth every cent. This team has 4 wins at best without him and him and the defense are their only shot at a Super Bowl this year. He’s been worth every cent.

Who doesn't have him top 10?

Wasn’t one of the posters saying he was "maybe” top ten? Between him and Holt?  Maybe I misread it

I tend to agree.  Most records wouldn’t be worth the risk imo but that particular record is an "All-Time-Legendary” record  - it would benefit the team, the O-Line etc almost as much as the player.

When people discuss the record many years from now - they will (likely) also mention the Eagles and the O-Line.

Barkley went from the Giants (who thought he wasn’t worth it) to the Eagles - better team, better O-Line and broke the record his first year here.   Heck of a story.

The cherry on top would be the Lombardi Trophy as well.

It's crazy how many people in here disagree with this statement. The line is owed a ton of credit, but someone still has to run the ball. If they didn't get Barkley, who would have been the RB? Gainwell? A rookie?

I didn't see, but maybe.

Either way that's dumb. Guy is a slam dunk top 10 WR

There was nothing indecisive on that play, the DB literally changes his direction just as Hurts moves on the the third receiver.  Not saying Hurts isn’t indecisive, too often he seems to be.  I think that is supported somewhat by Hurts leading in percentage of 4+ second looks, 22% of the time.  I think any of us who watch the All22 can attest to times where he doesn’t make anticipatory throws but rather looks until the receiver is open and then throws it, allowing the DB to recover.  He’s slow on the trigger.  But I think he is making progress.  As he grows more experienced he will see when the opening will occur, at least I sure hope so.

He is in year 5...

They are almost guaranteed to have nothing to play for in Game 17... so he needs to average almost 200 per game over the next 3.

If he can get within 50 by the last game, I think he suits up and goes to get it.  But, if wouldn't feel as special in game 17 as if he did it in 16.

That said... I think he can do it.  The bigger question comes if the Eagles are mathematically locked into the 2 seed before game 16... do they rest starters for 2 weeks or just 1?

That he is. But do you recall a play in previous years where there is discussion about Hurts going through three progressions?  I think Johnson was a good QB coach on mechanics.  I think with Nuss he is getting instructions that are focused on technique as well and we are seeing results start to flow.  The more you practice the technique, the better you get at it.  I doubt that Hurts ever has the speed of delivery that Marino had.  Doubt he ever gets a feel for the pass rush like Manning or currently Mahommes.  But you have to be blind not to see  progress.  Look at Sam Darnold, a year older than Hurts and the progress he made with better coaching this year.  I am not saying that Hurts will suddenly flourish into a GOAT, kind of doubt anything close to that.  But I think he is very willing to be coached and takes the information well.

I get you changed your schtick on him and that may include having truly reached your limit on him.  But giving up on a player that is showing signs of progress.  I recall the spring before Mailata beat out Dillard.  Some post by the moniker BigEFly was suggesting that it was time to fish or cut bait with Mailata.  Now granted, we hadn’t seen much with Mailata at that point which is a stark contrast with Hurts.  But then we got to see signs.  But I will ask @just relax to verify my eyes aren’t wrong, but the Mailata we see today at 27 with seven years experience is much better than the Mailata we saw that year.  I tend to be more defense oriented. Look at Josh Sweat and then go back and look at his first few years. Or BG.  Slay is a great example of that.

I am thrilled that Hurts has Nussmeier this year.  Hope Nussmeier’s kid realizes he needs another year of college so that Hurts has Nussmeier next year. I suspect that Jason’s reads and trigger will improve with his coaching. I may be wrong but the fact that Hurts continues to show progress gives me hope.  Maybe it’s residual for me after Wentz, a QB that knew what he needed to work on and never did.  A QB that stopped talking with his coach.  Hurts attitude towards accepting coaching and working with it was and remains a refreshing change from that for me.

I'm thinking he will have another 200 yard explosion in one of these last games. Steelers Defense is no joke, but no Defense outside of the Browns has really been able to stop Saquon.  He just needs to keep doing his thing.  Saquon is lock for an explosive run in any game.  It would be ironic if he needs like you said 50 or 60 more yards and the Giants game is the game he breaks it.  As far as "It won't be the same if he breaks it in 17". I think Dickerson broke OJ's record with an extra game.  OJ did it in 14 games.

Yes... but he went over 100 yards over the 2k mark.

And I won't deny, I wasn't alive for 14 game seasons so it didn't mean as much to me.  17 games is weird still.

Comparing to Mailata is a false equivalence though.  Mailata has basically only been playing football in general for 7 years.  Meanwhile, Hurts has been playing QB since he started to play the game... and was raised by a coach.  It's very different to compare their progressions in the NFL, when Mailata started so very far behind everyone in the league.  The remarkable thing is how he has developed from raw clay into a truly menacing LT.  Mailata is the outlier of outliers though.  Even more of an outlier than a guy who is merely switching positions like Jason Peter's coming from huge TE in college to LT in the NFL.

One of the things I like so much about the kid is he isn’t a glory chaser.   If he should surpass 2000, he will thank the OL for doing it while crediting Hurts with with the attention he demands and probably Gainwell for spelling him.  Best quote I saw this week was him talking about AJ being a better player because he runs routes so well. I really think Saquon brings so much more to a team than just his running ability.  His reaction after Calcaterra’s TD reminded me of why the locker room loved Greg Ward so much.

Everything I’ve seen this season says that Barkley is the perfect team mate. He lifts people up and brings the juice. Very unselfish too

Problem is for every example of progress there are tons of guys that dont and fail. You have a serious selection bias going on.

I don't like 17 either, NFL was being greedy.   This season would literally be winding down right now with 2 games to go after this one if it were still 16.  All they did was take a preseason game away and made it a live game and say, "Look, you're still playing the same amount of games", lol.   Look, I agree the extra game does give Saquon a better chance.   But that's wild the record has stood for over 4 Decades.   Yes they ran more back then and we've had some 2,000 yard rushes since then.    But not enough to top that record.

Is it though?   I think we would all agree that QB is more complex than OT.  Also, Mailata has had the same excellent position coach every year.  Jason has had a different OC every year since he has been out of High School and a different QB coach almost every year too.  I think Nussmeier is heads and tails above every QB coach he has had.

Did you watch JP in college?  A whole lot of the time he was playing TE like a OL.  They were discussing him as an OL possibility even back then.

Guess "I hope” has a different meaning to you. I see Jason’s faults but I think only seeing his faults is a whole lot more selection bias than me also noting where I see growth.  I guess you assume that Q will never be able to regularly make interceptions rather than PBUs? Cooper must be toast now after his game last week? Time to give up on Jurgens for his mistakes this year?

12 hours ago, TEW said:

He may be going through his progressions quicker, but if he is, it means he’s indecisive or unable to recognize when someone is open, or otherwise doesn’t know how to throw a person open.

Right. Part of the reason I laugh at that analysis is because who cares if he’s going through his reads quicker if he’s completely unable to process any information?  The first read is consistently wide open, and this was also the case last season.  He’s not capable of being a QB that can go through his progressions since this is his 5th year in the league.  At this point, I’d almost rather him be a 1 read QB since all these weapons that he’s equipped with are literally almost always open.

Why did Jalen miss 2 games in 2020, can’t seem to find anything about it on google

Which is why Mailata is even more of an outlier than JP.

But yes, Mailata comparison to Hurts is a false equivalence.  Different coaches in the same sport is night and day compared to switching different sports.  Some of what Mailata does in the running game, pulling, etc mirrors rugby, but the dancing bear footwork of pass protection has no correlation.  Mailata has benefitted from the best OL coach of his generation being his coach, but its still a ridiculous transition for Mailata, one that may never be duplicated again.

Hurts has been playing QB his entire life, is in his 5th NFL season and still struggles with some of the basic things at the position.

Mailata went from never playing the sport to being one of the best at his position in a few years (he was great before this season).

They are not at all similar.

If Bryce Huff can come back with some fresh legs, and make a difference as a 3rd down pass rush specialist that would be a big deal during the potential Rams/Vikings/Lions playoff gauntlet where you need to get those QBs off their spot. I like to think he was starting to turn a corner a bit at least in his role before he went down. A little more pass rush may be be the final piece of this defense.

It would be a shame if he would miss the 2K mark if he sits out the final regular game.  If it is within reach, let the man play and get the record.
