EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

Featured Replies

The bad news, 3 Teams in the NFC are 12-2.  The good news.  Two of them play each other at the end of the Season.   So that means someone will get a 3rd loss. Minny also plays Seattle and Greenback back to back.   The Eagles need to take care of their own business and win out starting with Washington.

Remember when people were saying Josh Allen might be the new Carson Wentz?

That was because he would try to break tackles like Wentz did. People didn't think he'd survive long without getting a serious injury

Does DET have a similar field surface than the Eagles? Thinking about the downside of domes, namely artificial surfaces and the injuries they cause.

NOTE: the internet tells me that Ford Field uses the same turf as the Meadowlands (Metlife), which we know is awful. Perhaps the Lions are making some of their bad luck…

Eagles use natural grass with some artificial fibers built into it, I think to help hold the sod down from being ripped up.

Very few domes have real grass.  And we saw even in that case that bad footing can happen with the best of intentions (presumably) with the Super Bowl in Tempe.

If any of us have not voted for Saquon then remembering football is a team sport, you are dragging down the rest of the Blog.  Here’s the link: https://www.nfl.com/pro-bowl-games/vote/special-teams/k/

I was looking at the QBs and the yards seemed off. They have Lamar for 4323yds and I know Burrow is the passing leader for the season

When did they start including total stats during pro bowl voting?

What we need is the following;

We need to win the next three games.

The Lions to lose one of the next two games against the Bears/49ers.

The Vikings to win the next two games.

The Lions to beat the Vikings in week 18.

That seems to be the only real pathway there. That will give both of them three losses and the Eagles with only two losses. Since the division would be in play for week 18, they will both play hard against each other and not rest players.

Need GB to beat MIN.

Need MIN to beat DET.

Need Eagles to win out.

That seems like the likeliest path.

They’re eating the pets!

Is this correct though? I was under inpression that if we WIN out and Vikes WIN out the SoV goes in Vikes favour

I believe it depends on how well the teams we beat do the rest of the season vs the teams they beat.

I think we hold SOV now with victories over Ravens and Steelers but if the Vikes win out they'll have beaten Detroit and Green Bay the last 2 games, which pumps their SOV a lot, whereas beating up on the Giants and Cowboys does nothing for ours.

This website is useful in looking at the scenarios.  http://www.playoffstatus.com/nfl/nfc-tiebreakers.html

The problem that we all face in trying to get a sense of the future on SOV is that all the teams have 3 games left, and they could go anywhere between 3-0 and 0-3 in those games.  So for instance the Packers currently sit as a 10-4 SOV input for us.  If they beat the Saints Vikings and Bears in those games, the 10-4 changes to 13-4, but if they lose to the Vikings it is only 12-5.

If Gb beats Minnesota then Minnesota loses divisional tiebreaker to lions unless lions lose to Chicago this week. Minnesota would have 2 divisional losses and lions if they beat the bears the most they could have if Minnesota beats them is 1. So if lions are 14-2 and Minnesota is 13-3 the game is meaningless for the Vikings as they can’t win the division or one seed cause of divisional record tiebreaker. So I’m guessing they rest guys week 18 as they are locked into the 5 seed

Good chance the cowboys go 0-3 with vs Tampa, at eagles and vs. commanders. Giants likely not much better with at Atlanta, vs Indy and at eagles. Those two really bring it down

Goedert has only played in 9 of 14 games this season.  Would we miss him if he weren't here next year?  According to the websites, he'd have an $11M cap hit if traded (Pre-June 1).

Calcattera has shown to be a competent receiver that Hurts is willing to throw to.  He is a pretty good and enthusiastic blocker as the move TE.  Just don't line him up across from a DE.  He is eligible for an extension this offseason.

Also, Uzomah has looked very good as an inline, blocking TE.  Between those two, we really haven't missed Goedert.  Plus, even when healthy, Goedert wouldn't be able to maximize his value here playing alongside Brown and Smith.  He probably has more value on another team.

Thoughts?

IMO, Goedert has been overrated for a while.  He's fragile and even when he's healthy he just doesn't seem to be a major factor in the passing game.   In the running game, he's very good, but our other TEs have gotten much better than they were.   Goedert is, frankly, a luxury on this team at this point.  I'd be fine moving him in the offseason.  I'd also be fine keeping him, but looking to add another young TE through the draft.

But the Vikings still play an 8-6 Seahawks, then 10-4 packers and 12-2 lions.

True, and If you factor in wins in all three games for both the Eagles and the Vikings their SOV goes from .387 to .452 and the Eagles goes from .440 to .453 BUT the results of all the other games in the last three weeks will shuffle the W-L records of all the teams.  In those 45 games, if the Vikings SOV opponents go 17-28 they end up with a SOV of .439 and if the Eagles SOV opponents go 21-24 then we end up with the same SOV of .439.

This.  We need Detroit to lose at least once before the final game against Minnesota.  If Minnesota OTOH loses once before then, they have NOTHING to play for and will rest everyone and get blown out.

There is a way for the Vikings to end up 15-2 and for the Eagles to win the tiebreaker.  BUT, a lot of other games have to break just right.

The ESPN Playoff machine is fun to figure these things out.

That's not true.  There is no difference in quality between the TNF and MNF games.

Yeah but what if they tie? We’d end up with a better record than both if we win out.

I’m dead serious, by the way.

In that scenario, I'm resting players.

Given the low likelihood of us getting the #1 seed, I'd rather the Lions hold on to it. They are vulnerable in the Division round and if they lose, we get to host the NFCCG.

Probably going to have him for one more year.  Doubt anyone would give us anything of real value and we won't want to take the dead cap hit.  I see the same scenario we had when Goedert was drafted and played under Ertz for a year.

You are correct.  The Lions are the one that we have to worry about the most.   There is no path to pass them without them losing.  And they have the Bears and 49ers.  They could very well win both.   In that case, we'd need the Vikings to have something to play for... so we have to hope the Vikings don't lose, unless the Lions also lose.

The Lions control their own destiny.  The Vikings almost control their own destiny, but need the SOV tiebreaker over the Eagles to favor them.  Currently it does, but if a laundry list of things happen, the Eagles could surpass them.  And then there's the Eagles... with nothing they can really control for the 1 seed.   If they win Sunday, they own the 2 seed, and that might be good enough.   They get a week to rest starters against the Giants.  And, could rest their starters against the Cowboys if they wanted to concede the 1 seed to get the extra rest for their main guys.   I don't think they will rest players until there's no longer a path to the 1 seed, but they could if they wanted to give guys extra rest.   For that matter, they might be able to beat the Cowboys even resting guys like Barkley and Carter.

Still not a believer in the Vikings. A team with Sam freaking Darnold at QB is not 1 seed material. That's not happening.

You are likely right.   If a team blew them away... I'd be ok moving on.  If not, he sticks around and they look for the next one.  Calcaterra has done a nice job as a backup and could next year also.
