How are the Lions so high defensively?  (Buffalo scored another TD on them while I typed this)

You are likely right.   If a team blew them away... I'd be ok moving on.  If not, he sticks around and they look for the next one.  Calcaterra has done a nice job as a backup and could next year also.

Calcaterra is doing a nice backup job but his blocking is often pretty poor so he really can't become our #1 especially since we are a run first team now.  I suspect Howie takes someone in the draft with an aim to move on from Goedert after next year.  Calc stays around as the backup for a while as long as he continues to deliver.

Yes, they definitely need to address TE next year as one of the top priorities.

I wonder what this draft looks like for TEs

The guy from Penn State is excellent but he'll probably go too high for us.  Not sure about the rest of them.

Warren at 32 would be a wet dream.

A bunch of games going the right way can flip it, but its a long shot.

This is it precisely. We desperately need the Giants and Cowboys to win their non-divisional games. Plus have other stuff go our way too.

You can make the playoff machine thing work it in our favor, but in a realistic sense, we're probably losing the tie-break to the Vikings.

Wow…They’ve really got it bad with the injuries.  I can’t help feeling bad for their fans even though it makes things easier for the Eagles.

This website is useful in looking at the scenarios.  http://www.playoffstatus.com/nfl/nfc-tiebreakers.html

The problem that we all face in trying to get a sense of the future on SOV is that all the teams have 3 games left, and they could go anywhere between 3-0 and 0-3 in those games.  So for instance the Packers currently sit as a 10-4 SOV input for us.  If they beat the Saints Vikings and Bears in those games, the 10-4 changes to 13-4, but if they lose to the Vikings it is only 12-5.

We would actually want the Packers to lose games, even though we beat them. We beat them once but the Vikings would have beaten them twice, so the Packers win total counts an extra time for them.

But I also don't want the Packers to lose and finish seventh. I'd rather not have to play them in the first round.

We need to start some rumors...  maybe a deep fake of him in a gas mask and bong.

Still not a believer in the Vikings. A team with Sam freaking Darnold at QB is not 1 seed material. That's not happening.

It's like 2017 all over again with Case Keenum.

Wow.  That's got to be a real boost to the players stepping in.   It's a bad day when your coach compares you to molded bread.

That’s a real Christmas message there.

Need some good news on Dickerson today. He’s the best LG in the league. C’mon big boy be ok.

I tend to think he’s back next year his dead money is $11 mil and his cap savings to either cut or trade him pre-June 1st is 700k according to over the cap. If you try to deal him I’m guessing due to his durability that you are likely getting a mid round pick (5th likely if conditions are met that could be higher). The year he’s likely gone is 2026. It’s 5.9 mil dead money and 17.9 mil in cap savings according to overthecap. Do think we draft a TE sometime between rounds 2-5 though

The problem is he is due another $13,995,000 option bonus for 2025, so if you let him play out the contract, he counts ~23mm in dead money in 2026 to not be on the team (pay $14mm in cash but only charge 20% (~2.8mm) in 2025, adding ~11.2mm more in dead money). There's just no way you can let him play 2025 and pay that bonus -- he needs to restructure/extend or be cut. The last year of Howie's deals with unguaranteed option bonuses are set up not to be paid.

Yeah every other coach just says "next man up."

Or Siri uses garden and flower analogies.

I was thinking the same thing.

He’s also basically said his defense sucks and he doesn’t believe in them with some of his game time decisions the last couple weeks

What's with all the talk about the Niners trading Shanahan? Is there any validity to this or is it just people floating out stuff for the hell of it.

Actually, Calcaterra's blocking is much improved. He's doing a lot of blocking on our counter runs and doing it well. On one of Saquon's 70+ yard runs, I forget which, he made the key kick-out block. What Stout has him doing is getting him on the move. That build-up in momentum makes a huge difference. He'll never be a great drive blocker but he can hit a target in space. As a classic TE, no he ain't that. I agree with you that he's not ideal as the #1. Would be nice to get, say, Tyler Warren in here for that.

Need GB to beat MIN.

Need MIN to beat DET.

Need Eagles to win out.

That seems like the likeliest path.

Except GB beating Minnesota leaves them nothing to play for in that last game.

They will use that as a bye and not play their starters. Detroit will play their starters because the Eagles being on their tail.

EDIT : NM there were others that answered this.

I think it's part of a larger thought that the Niners may look to tear it down and start the rebuild. Trent Williams is 36 -- his new contract probably makes him unmovable for 2025, but they have to think about it as he has real value. Kittle is 31, has no guaranteed money left, and is banged up. Deebo has no gteed money and 1 year left, and he has fallen off a cliff. While they have a lot of 2025 cap space, they basically have none in 2026 as structured, so moving guys and taking dead money in 2025 makes sense. And obviously they have a decision to make on Purdy.

On top of that, Shanahan is a great play designer but subpar game coach.

If I were running that team, I'd let Purdy walk, move Williams/Kittle/Deebo, and try to rebuild.

They also have to deal with Greenlaw (FA after this year), McCaffrey is 28 but has gteed money for 2025, and Hargrave has no gteed money left.
