US Universities attract the best and brightest students from all over the world, which feeds the next generation of researchers. The benefits to the US have been incredible, as the research that happens here in the states feeds in to the next generation of innovation.

Silicon Valley is what it is because there has been a pipeline of talented students and researchers drawn from all over the world to the Bay area.

You can "haha" all you want, but without the brain-drain from Germany to the US prior to WWII we may not have been able to beat the Germans to the atomic bomb. These things matter.

Right, feeds into innovation. Implication there being market applicability of research. This is especially so in places like Stanford and MIT who have a history of graduates (and sometimes not even graduates) parlaying their research into creation of new companies.

VA researchers discovered a new diabetes drug from an unusual source. In the mid 1990s, Drs. John Eng and Jean-Pierre Raufman found that a hormone in the venom of the Gila monster—a large lizard native to the southwestern United States—stimulates the body’s insulin production. The hormone, exendin-4, works similar to another hormone called GLP-1 found in the digestive tract in humans that regulates blood glucose. But exendin-4 degrades in the body much slower than GLP-1.

But the story doesn’t end there. While studying the effects of exendin-4 on the pancreas, Dr. Egan and her colleagues found that it also seemed to have beneficial effects on the brain. Specifically, GLP-1 stimulates the growth of neurites (developing neurons) in cell culture, and both GLP-1 and exendin-4 protect mature neurons against cell death. In fact, research increasingly suggests that there may be a link between some neurodegenerative disorders and metabolic dysfunction. The hope is that drugs, such as exendin-4, that enhance metabolic function may also be useful in the treatment of neurologic disease.

Building on these findings, Dr. Egan and others in the NIA Intramural Research Program have tested exendin-4 in cellular and mouse models of several neurodegenerative diseases. The results are promising. For example, using a mouse model of Huntington’s disease, they found that exendin-4 reduces the accumulation of the mutant huntingtin protein, which is implicated in the disease’s onset and progression. The treatment also improved motor function and extended the survival time of the Huntington's disease mice.
