The whole "prevent Commanders from getting him" smells like BS. Since when has Howie made moves just to prevent another team? That's like one of the first lessons learned of how not to be a bad GM.

That sounds like Howie helping Andrew Berry drive up the price for the Commanders

Stupid as hell. They aren't going to overpay to prevent someone else from getting him.

It's not really "overpay just to prevent them from getting him" as much as it is "ramp up the pursuit if they think a division rival is getting him" but I expect the Eagles to be interested throughout the process, it's just are they serious enough to invest.

I’ve thought that they are too reliant on it and it’s prevented them from getting more explosive plays on 3rd and short. It’s why one of my favorite plays in the playoffs was the deep shot to AJ out of it against GB even though it was incomplete. I’ve wanted them to do more stuff like that.

You can’t argue against the statistical success of it, but I don’t think their short yardage situations would fall off a cliff if it’s banned. If anything, Barkley probably would have had 20 TDs this year.

I just think the Eagles would be really good at a traditional sneak too so it’s all moot.

Its just agent noise

So what is the most Howie offseason according to his overall track record? Think it goes something like this.

Address the trenches:

Sign Becton

Sign Williams

Work on the margins:

Sign Burks

Sign Rodgers

Sign F. Johnson

Extend players for salary cap relief & performance:

Extend Slay

Extend Goedert

Extend Reed

Extend Jurgens

_______________________________

Baun Walks- no high priced investment in LB position

Sweat Walks- this could go either way because of dead cap hit and advantage of resigning him to create cap room. If reasonable could come back, but will likely be overpriced.

Trade Davis-(like he did with Reddick) before he's worth nothing. Not committing long term and is decisive in move. Also, does this to be able to sign Carter and others in the future.

Trade Pickett (flipping a QB for equal or more value than he got)

I see this as the alternate route. Not the preferred route. Still not a bad offseason at all if this is the core of your in house moves. Gains picks this year and high compensatory picks next year. Has great optionality going forward. And is most bang for the buck.

I think (hope maybe) Howie views Baun as an exception to the rule, similar to the RB position with Barkley last year. Baun take a slight discount and we can nab him right around 14 mil per year or a little lower hopefully or some kind of incentives to sweeten it.

I hope we keep Baun. A good ILB is so important to the scheme and I think the fall off is big. I also don't think he extends Slay unless it's to spread cap.

Why would he extend a CB who will be 35 who said he's only playing one more year?

I guess the theory is sign him, lower his cap hit this year and next and try to effectively tag on some dummy years? We know Howie likes to operate that way but I’m not saying in this case it makes much sense.

I meant more of a restructure on that one for minimizing cap hit. I'd keep him around another year and ease in Ringo if he let's up or gets hurt.

You don't think he already has dummy years to the max on his deal? lol

Only thing they could really do with him is get him to take a pay cut

Apparently the Bills are currently over the cap? I mean how? That is a roster that lacks serious top end talent.

It's not that random. All the coaches are doing PC's at the combine and that's getting asked to every coach.

What are the other teams view on it?

Just the way they structure contracts. They have a ton of restructuring to do. Josh Allen, Von Miller, Ed Oliver, Dion Dawkins and Matt Milano is almost half their cap.

From '62 until around '78 we were awful. Imagine graduating high school without ever having spent a single day in class with the Eagles being a playoff team. That was me.

The '70s at Vet Stadium really were dreary AF.  I think they hit that dead on in Invincible.

I was a few years after you so I did see the playoffs a couple of times.

btw - Several of those years were the 2-4 win type years.  It wasn't like we were just missing by a game.

Kelce couldn't swallow his pride. The large gap between he and Noah Gray is not that large at this point. I just don't see how the Chiefs come out of this offseason better than Bills or Ravens with their cap situation and free agency losses. And too many other teams are closing that gap in AFC.

5 players ( Mahomes, Jones, Thuney, Jawaan Taylor and Kelce) take up 2/3's of their cap space. And not much relief in site. 3 of those 5 are likely are out of their prime or close. I give Jones one more very good year. He's laboring and has a lot of wear and tear. Thuney is 33 next season and Taylor is just mediocre at best.
